STARS TO STATIC dence pzadee Zatazew Jawa 1- gms' laws. 9 2 'I A first this year was the science survey class open to iuniors and seniors, offering them an intelligent understanding of the scientific world. The course introduced the fundamental principles of the physical sciences: astronomy, geology, meteorology, physics, and chemistry to 29 seniors and five juniors. Demonstrations with physics equipment added variety to regular classwork. Emphasiz- ing chemistry and using less math than in physics, science survey made students eligible to belong to the Science Club and enter the Science Fair. BOING-A, BOING-A! That Mars is getting closer, dis- cover Charles Dulty and Joseph Nightingale, studying the -2, position of Mars from o planetarium. f 26 PUTTING THEIR DREAMS to work are Patrick Pickett, Joseph Lemmons, and Robert Cast os they assemble and study a static machine. Should it be a gas burner, a coal furnace, or good old steam heat for the new school? Freshman scientists discussed this problem when they studied types of new heating systems. As the Suez crisis shook the world, three classes of freshmen studied the uses of petroleum and its importance to all nations. Reconstructing water wheels for the old mill stream was quite as fascinating as learn- ing the basic principles of anatomy. The pur- pose of this course was to form a solid back- ground for more advanced science courses. With meter sticks, voltmeters, and thermom- eters, senior physicists measured their way through studies of mechanics, electricity, heat, light, and sound. Applying principles learned during lecture periods, students conducted ex- periments during two lab periods a week. Seven boys took the Westinghouse Talent Search Test in December. The test was given to discover the talent of those students inter- ested in further scientific study. Science Club demonstrations and Science Fair projects chal- lenged ingenuity of future scientists. ,uf-
