jf AT CAMPAIGN kick-off dinner Andrew Hellmuth, chairman of fund- raising, invites Archbishop Karl J. Alter to take mike as guest speaker while Joseph Shouvlin chats with Monsignor Varley. pfmqez, ffazt Keynote Ecunpadga While we built within ourselves, we cherished another dream of a building-a new Catholic Central High School. At present we are crowded, with classes over- flowing into Sidley Building and Buckley Hall. We also have homerooms in the biology lab and the former guidance room. With an enrollment of 582 students, Central is ex- pected to have over 700 students ready for admission this fall. It is evident that Catholic Central, established in l93l, is rapidy becoming inadequate. Taking Action Recognizing this necessity, Daniel P. Shouvlin do- nated his family's former home place in the llO0 block of East High St. and two lots adjoining it as the site for the new school. The next important step was to raise at least S800,000 to construct the school. With Pray! Work! Give! as their motto, Catholics launched the fund-raising cam- paign March 4, l956. Displaying tireless enthusiasm, they sacrificed time and energy to organize and carry on the drive. On Campaigners! They publicized the need for the school and instilled the spirit of sacrifice and generosity into the hearts of Springfield parishioners through the Campaign News , a weekly paper. Everyone was to donate his fair GEF, I CAN hardly wait 'til it's built , exclaims Kathleen O'Brien to Charles Schartz and Pat Lynch as they examine blueprints of the new school. share to the fund on a deferred-payment plan. Archbishop Alter gave the drive his wholehearted support and, after all plans were made, solicitation of pledges began March 25. Funds raised through this campaign topped the million mark by more than SlO0,000. t f Q . O A arp' , 3, - , , 4 ' 'Eiff-U .,,, I 1 I
