CROSS COUNTRY AND TRACK Cross Country The Cougar Harriers, composed mostly of underclassmen, fought through an unsuccessful season with undaunted spirit. Luck was hard on the boys but they kept on trying. Our team was ci building team this year and promises to be a top threat in the near future. Cross Country is one of the most grueling sports and the squad deserves credit for the hours spent in preparation for the long, rough runs. Front: R. Bek, T. Schmidt, G. Lesinski, J. Dietrich, L. Reserves The Cougar year- lings, in spite of a height handicap which retarded them, main- tained a high team spir- it and concluded the season with a record of 7 wins, 7 losses. The Reserve cagers suffered a mid-season loss of Ed Wagner and Hermie Miller, who were moved up to give the varsity a needed depth. The Cougar cubs averaged 37.5 points per tory piled up an impressive record of 9 wins and 3 game while allowing their opponents only 26.5 points average. The team's losses were by narrow margins losses. Nine of the twenty-one members were over six feet and the average height of the team was and its members will bear watching in future years. Track A tremendous turnout of boys hoping for berths on the track squad greeted Coach Sowle this spring. The team this year is com- posed mainly of underclassmen with a few returning veterans in the shot put, pole vault, and hurdles, but the future of the team is uncertain because of the general lack of ex- perience. The Cougars looked promising in their first meet when they defeated South. The cindermen showed strength in the relays and hurdles and are hopeful of retaining their City League dual crown. C.
