CROSS COUNTRY The i953 Cross Country squad provided good representation for Catholic in the hill and dale sport. Victories over South, Creston, Central, Christian, and Ottawa gave the Cougar runners second place in the city title race. The most stunning victory of the season was the win over favored Ottawa for the fifth triumph ofthe season and second place in the team standings. Dale Vanden Berg upheld the tradition, now well estab- lished at Catholic, of having an outstanding distance runner. One of the problems was that of height. The team averaged 51 ll - - - 9 which is extremely short In modern basketba many extra hours trying to develop new Techniques and speed to offset the height disadvantage. The great variety of offensive and defensive styles used in the games made each contest interesting. This variety was devised and directed b th k'll ' y e s i ed Varsity Coach-Don Lennon. With their tremendous FF e ort to bring victories to Catholic Central, the players displayed a spirit which winning schools might have lacked. All the players saw action, but the team ll.
