ig: This is the scientific age, the age of television, atomic bombs and flying saucers. So in order to keep up with the times we were wondering what would happen if a flying saucer were to land and the pilots who naturally never had seen Catholic Central before, were to go through our school and inspect it. This is what they might hear or see in our school. The Cathedral is in bad shape. It must be, because at noon there are so many people leaning against it to hold it up. A Snowballing was prevalent and was defended on the gfounds that it enabled some of the weaker brethren to get even with any big buIlies . This is true, of course. Some of the girls must be all of six feet tall. The students kept their books in brown wooden desks. The desks were provided with a round hole in the upper right hand corner of the top. This was for the disposal of waste paper. Many students dreamed of the places that they would like to visit if they could. Some wanted to see the state of New York, others the state of Arizona. Some, however, wanted to remain in the state of confusion. During the year a club was formed to improve the penmanship of the students. This was the Writers' Club. As usual Catholic Central had a fine boxing team. Team colors were chosen by the students. The boys looked very nice in their black and blue. Some of the pupils were avid coin collectors. At least some were heard to say they were fond of Old Gold. As a whole, the students seemed to enioy English class. However, one Freshman when asked whether he enjoyed English said, Sure l do, I speak it every day. When asked about History, the underclassmen said that it wasn't fair because they would have regular History plus all the history that the class of 'Sl would make. - A The students didn't mind coming to school too much, except once when disaster occurred. All the coke machines broke down. One of the main social events of the year was known as the Homecoming Dance. 'Why so called, we don't know, because most of the couples didn't come home till late. There were various drives this year. Various rewards were offered for good, outstanding efforts. One Freshman said that he couldn't see why rewards had to be offered before people would be good. He thought everyone should be good for nothing. ln some quarters, the old practice of study hall basketball has been abolished. We know that this custom'won't be missed as much as the basket was missed. There was danger of infiltration by StaIin's agents. At least when the boys were asked where they were going, they said to .loe's. The Geometry classes studied squares, circles, and rectangles. To acquire skill in this science they drew them with rules and compasses. One Sophomore wondered why they needed a compass because they weren't going anywhere. The students, ever eager to continue their higher education, brought newspapers to school and eagerly read intellectual articles if there happened to be any on the funny page. The Seniors read Chaucer's CANTERBURY TALES, but one thing puzzled them. No one knows what kind of a berry a canterbury is. Anything about radio waves naturally bringslto mind the great inventor of radio, Marconi. One group of the boys gave Marconi a vote of thanks for his great invention spaghetti. Most of the students didn't mind coming and going to school so much but it was what happened in be- tween that mattered. Having surveyed the whole school and gotten a very true to life but misinterpreted view of it, the en- lightened space men took off in their rocket to re- turn to their native planet. Herbert Goewey, '5l g
