Then, as now, that confidence in God is to be cher- ished, for the salvation and preservation of human mankind, for the revival of an unequalled spirit of Christianity, and for the hope of a better world in which to' live. During this momentous time of glory, the entire Church Militant joins in prayer with the universe, pleading with God for the forgiveness of sin, and peace of mind and soul. An illustrious anniversary of the Catholic Church, lighting the way for all people, is celebrated on this, the twenty-fifth observance of the Holy Year. This jubilant affair is a great blessing to the World in its chaotic state. Class of 1950 Catholic Central High School Grand Rapids, Michigan Dear Members of Class of 1950: You, The Class of 1950, go forth from Catholic Central 'bearing a noble tradition. Like classes of other years, you have received the best that science and faith can give. You have had teachers who are ever'alert to the latest and best in secular knowledge. Of even greater importance, you have had teachers who have taught and have manifested in their lives the eternal truths of God. With such equipment, you, the graduates of the class of 1950, can only be men and women of intelligence and courage, ready to take your place in the forefront of American citizenry and of God's own commonwealth. Oar prayers and hopes go with each and everyone of you, class of 1950. Faithfully in Christ, ,- .Is Y' , Most Reverend Tranci Haas Bishop of Grand Bapi. As we turn the pages of the book, we will meet in pictures, the members of the faculty, our classmates, and friends. VVe will review again the athletic prowess of our football team and track squad. We will fondly recall those big dances, the mixers, and Gala Nite. We will remember our classes, our moments on the 9'drag, and just plain fun. Most of all, we will recall the mysteries of our revered faith, as explained by our Most Reverend Bishop Haas on various occasions, and by our instructors. We have dedicated our book to the Church 'in its Holy Year, and we have followed that year through, season by season. If, in some year in the future, a dusty copy of the Spire: will recall to you the year 1950, and reproduce the atmosphere described above, then it has served its purpose. So read on .... The cooperative spirit of all the students combined with the ass'istance of the advisors, Father Yager, Sister M. Damien, Sister M. Ioan and Sister M. Crowds came to participate in our Gala Nite, throngs ot people complimented our football team by their faithful attendance at every game, students filled our gym to take part in our dances. Our class worked as a team, and as the team breaks up to fill their prospective places in the World, every individual Will take with him the invaluable lessons he has learned and the Well-rounded edu- cation he has received at Catholic Central. 14 BEVERLY ABEL Holy Name Glee Club IANNETTE ALKASSES St. Andrew Glee Club, Student Council HELEN I. Mart Iarnes G. McClure, Vera Paberz. A , Senior Poem This --yetdr, as in the decades past, All roads will meet in Rome at last. The pilgrims trudge their weary way From far-off lands to kneel and pray. So, too, we journeyed from our birth For eighteen years upon this earth To reach our destination here, As Seniors of The Holy Year. The push that sped us on our way To school that bright beginners' day Was ministered with equal force In each ensuing year, of course. It jet-propelled us through the space Ol eight full years and set the pace For high school life in years to come . . An energetic, lively one. As Freshmen at C. C. we found That year to be a testing ground Of character and charm and skill, Of perseverance and good will. Though Sophomore days were much the same 'Twas then began our march toward fame. The title Iunior earned at last, With all the fun attached, soon passed. Our hearts were yet to learn the joys Awaiting Senior girls and boys. Election day came into sight And we campaigned from morn to night With speeches, songs, and slogans too, Balloons, and signs for all to view. Then Koelzer, Gerke, Polaskey, Mead, Were voted in, and took the lead. Now we shall not presume to name Each football star who brought us fame. The Player of the Year we deem To be each man on our great team. Oh what a thrill when they came through, Our undefeated champs in blue! Those cups and trophies - all of them - Were justly earned by mighty men. Fond memories of Gala Nite Recall a technicolor sight Of gaily decorated stands And booths maintained by helpful hands. Once more we heard the gym resound With laughter when the Mixer found Us gathered there, and later when Dear Santa brought us gifts again. The Homecoming was truly fine, The Sno-Shuffle was most sublime. On both occasions could be seen A very gracious King and Queen. No less in royalty and state Appeared our Snow-Queen candidate. And noble, too, was she that day - The maid who crowned the Queen of May Democracy, a noble Word, ls one to which we all referred. To most of us the name Macbeth Provoked the thoughts of bloody death. But all of us, throughout our days, Shall give the Honor Students praise. Our graduates in music, too, Shall hear applause which is their due. Our Class of '50 claims to be The acme of activity. We all had meetings to attend: Each club pursued a worthwhile end. We organized devotions, too, And always kept this end in view: The class most likely to succeed ls clean of thought and pure of deed. Now all the pomp and pageantry Of Class Night is a memory, And Graduation's hopes and fears Are lost amid the smiles and tears. But we shall meet at heaven's door To rest in God forevermore - And celebrate eternally The Class of 'SU jubilee. Margaret Dautremont , -W-WT.- Y . Scholl The Varsity Club - The Cougars Pr-owl The Varsity Club ol IQSU is composed of over fifty major letter-Winners. It is by far the most active club of its kind in the city. Having made its Weight felt in the restriction of the wearing of let- ter-sweaters and cougars, the club turned its attention to its many activities. In the tall it threw a mammoth hayride for members only. Then to rebuild its depleted treasury, the members sold ice cream at the basketball games. In the spring was held the third annual Cougar Prowlp an affair which promises to become a tradition at C. C. Catholic can well be proud of its lettermen, not only for their athletic prowess, but also for their line organization, the Varsity Club. Officers: Bob Fitzgerald, Willie Wolf, Ron Makosky, Don Kozminski Advisor: Reverend Ioseph Murphy The arian Club Mother, My Confidence ..... The members of the 1950 Marian Club aimed to become the spiritual leaders of Catholic Central under the guidance of Sister M. Ioan. They strove for more personal sanctification, and thus, through good example, to promote the spiritual Welfare of the entire student body. This group of Senior girls led the others to daily Mass and Com- munion. ln their every action, they tried to im- itate their model, for whom their club is named. Mary Delaney, Barbara Miles and Dolores Sobczak combined their efforts with those of the members and sponsored the Mother-Daughter Faculty Tea, February 26. At this gathering, Sis- ters, mothers, and daughters acted as one social group. This was one of the most successful events of its type, ever held at this school. The Marian Club accomplished a great deal, and Catholic Central profited much by its exis- tence. Row One: M. E. Simon, M. Czachorski, M. J. Gerke. J. Maciejewski, M. J. Polaskey, M. Delaney, D. These words sym- bolize the spirit of the Ushers' Club for at all assemblies in Church and gym the ushers were on duty, performing their tasks very efficiently, without reward. The seventeen members of the club were under the capable leadership of Paul Rohman as president, and Edward Moore, vice- president. Sister M. Roberta, the advisor, was responsible, in no small way, for the success of the club. Laboratory assistants- indeed a fitting title for the Chemasists, a new club which was organized in Steptember, 1949, under the supervision of Sis- ter M. Petronilla. The members spent many hours in assembling apparatus, making s o l u t i o n s straightening the laboratory, and doing many other tasks that arose. These assistants surely deserve a pat on the back for all that they accomplished. Under the guiding hand of Sister Anna Marie, the East Catholic Glee Cub has developed into the largest the school has ever had, and has pro- vided hours of entertainment for the students of Catholic, and the people of Grand Rapids. This choral group, together with that ot West Catholic, has entertained the patients of St. Mary Hospital, the residents of the Little Sisters of the Poor, and the radio audience of the Catholic Hour. The West Catholic group has accomplished much this year under the efficient direction of Sister M. Michael, exhibiting their talents at the Spring Concert May 17, with The Blue Danube, and You'll Never Walk Alone. The East Side group, also participating in this concert, displayed their accomplishments in the ever popular Indian Love Call, and Let There Be Song. The boys, the Perry Comos of East Catholic, blended their voices and contributed real talent to make the concert of 1950 a success. Why was C. C. so successful in their football campaign? Here's the answer. Puzzling reverses, quick passes, smashing drives, a ravaging and devastating offense, a tight suppressing defense, and a certain particular quality which no other team could claim or match-the Hail Mary -a play of prayer, which not only overcomes all opposition, but proves a bulwark to any advancing foe. Thus the entire Cougar squad, her hard-charging linemen, and 'lgalloping-ghost backfield men, held the gridiron sway in Michi- gan and deserve many congratulations for their victories. The courageous Trojans fought on even terms for two quarters but through Catholic's consistent, devastating drives, were slowly buried as were former C. C. opponents. A fumble on the opening kick-off enabled South to set up their lone touchdown. Then the T-bomb exploded, pointed by 'El Capitan' Koelzer. 'Rhythmic' Terry Spielmaker climaxed an 80-yard march with an 8-yard end run. The half-time score, 7-7, shows the terrific battle waged by both teams. Three C. C. explosions, Naimo's 6-yeard run, Fitz's smashing, powerful 24-yard jaunt, and a nifty Koelzer-Axdorff T. D. pass made shambles of South's eleven. As usual, the line play was something spectacular, parti- cularly on the play of Wolf, Axdorff, Iebb, Attala, and Schoen. C. C. - 27. CENTRAL - 12 Nearing the City Title, the T-terrifying offensive-minded Cougars subdued a determined Central outfit, 27-12, churning up Houseman Field before 11,000 gasping, frenzied fans. With defensive play thrown to the four winds, Catholic ran Central bow-legged with quick-opening power plays and the deceptive hand-offs of 'I-locus Pocus' Koelzer, confining the scoring to the first and third periods. 'Diminutive' Pete and 'Speedy' Terry accounted for two precious T. D.'s apiece, each one running from 3 and 7 yards out for the markers. Fitz- gerald's three out of four conversions displayed his steady, firm, constant, and uniform place kicking. Allie Rice, Bill Banaszak and Willie Wolf played a bang-up game, with 'Huck' Attala and Paul Sheldon, likewise shining in the encounter. Hey Fitz! Ted Sow1e's roaring Cougars, first in state ratings, scored a precise 34-7 victory over the North-enders. It took just fifteen minutes-that is, for tank- lilce Naimo to run '76 yards on the first play and set up a T. D. for LaVerne Wolf-for a slick-faking Koelzer-Downer touchdown pass - for another 18- yard jaunt by Wolf-and then Coach Theo started clearing the bench. A 45-yard lateral play, Makowski-Vorenkamp-Russell sweeping dance, made it 27-O. A Creston score and Nick Bono's swivel-hipped 9-yard dash clinched the final score. It must be said that the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th strings, nearly matched with the alertness, speed, and stability of the lst string, will surely make his- tory and bring glory to C. C. in coming years. C. 'Pistol' Pete Naimo's four consecutive touchdown sprees of 6, 70, 8, and 81 yards were something to behold. Not until the final ten minutes of play was the C. C. victory assured. The closest the Slicers came was 27-21, but 'Gentleman' Iim Koelzer, faking a field goal with Fitzgeralds help, tossed a touchdown pass to Willie Wolf, which was quickly followed by another scor- ing jaunt by 'Terrible' Terry. Never before did Retreat seem to mean so much to us, the Seniors, because it was our lastg for the underclassmen, because they realized the importance of the graces gained. Af- ter the Papal blessing and benediction, we emerged from our Retreat determined to do better and to build strong Catholic characters. Top: Father Tobin gives the Papal Blessing. Della Jean Breckeh, Lynn Brophy, and Jean Brown begin their retreat, In the Nnme of We Father Exhibiting true Cougar spirit, the very essence of C. C. tradition, the Varsity squad was intent on downing all opponents in its path, but was confronted with heart- breaking disappointments at almost every turn.
