U I Man, since his invention of war, has valued one prize above all others - World Peace. The class of nineteen hundred forty-nine is about to step into a world which has long echoed the cry for peace but has done little to attain it. The urgent need for prayer, reparation, and sacrifice to merit Peace was revealed by 0ur Lady to threp humble children thirty-two years ago as they tended their flock near the village of Fatima, Portugal. It is with the certainty that we must look to Mary, Queen of Peace, for guidance to fulfill these requests that we lovingly dedicate this yearbook to - 0ur Lady of the Rosary of Fatima. U 1 rx 3 e h 1 3 0 After struggling through twelve years in our pres- ent obsolete schools it became apparent to me that the time has come to improve the conditions that exist in today's schools. An extensive poll to deter- mine the reforms most desired by the students in their schools has been conducted by our expert poll- ster, Dr. Halftrot fnot to be confused with Dr. Gallupj. The plans have been drawn and we will begin construction of our dream school, to be called the School of Bliss, as soon as we have acquired the necessary capital. QPut some money in the pot, boy.j We have also been delayed by court action brought against us by the C.l.O. I suppose you could call it, pardon the expression, a union suit. Along the West Coast the survey showed that the students didn't object to their school so much, it was the principal of the thing. Therefore, we have decided to have as head of our school an elected member of the student body. Transportation by cab or plane, to and from school, will be furnished at the expense of the school. Vince Remus and Pauline Rode have been contracted to provide the air service. If you wish to drive your own car you may be assured that it will receive the best of care in our three-story park- ing garage. All doors in the school will be operated by electric eyes. If they ever get blood-shot you'll know that they are beingkept well-oiled. Escula- tors and elevators have been planned for all, but for any teacher who assigns homework, especially research at the public library, I suggest a slow boat to China. We would, however, like to see the Sill- dents make use of our own library which will be well-stocked with comic books, racing magazines, and the annual Sears Roebuck catalog. We also have on order several dozen joke books for seniors to use in their study of Milton. QEditor's note: He probably means Milton Berle.j The home rooms will really be homey. First of all, we will install radios, telephones, phonographs, television sets, and for you sportsmen we will have direct wires to Churchill Downs, Arlington Park, and Joe's Pool Room. We also plan to provide some old rocking-chairs for your relaxation during free periods. You can see that we have planned these improvements to make your school life happier. We would like to see you filled with good cheer and Christmas spirits the entire year. euzh tv-six The lounge rooms will be furnished with pool tables on the advice of the physics students who claim that they are a necessity in the study of re- bounds. They also insisted on a roulette wheel to study centrifugal force. One student, who remains anonymous, said the idea of spin-drier washing ma- chines came from the roulette wheel which has been cleaning pockets for years. Speaking of Physics, the new tilt-back chairs in the Physics room will be self- oiling. As always, the rigid rules on the subject of smok- ing will be enforced. lA7e strictly forbid the blowing of smoke in a teacher's face. That sort of practice can become very annoying. We also ask you not to throw your butts in the Biology aquariums, and if you want to smoke your nickel cigars in school please be kind enough to supply your own Air-wick. The school will have an oxygen tent ready in case of asphyxiation. We have decided to continue gym classes on a voluntary basis. To aid these classes in their im- portant job of developing co-ordination of mind and body we will install that wonderful reflex de-- veloping instrument, the pin-ball machine. For the home-room athletes we will mount backboards on the waste baskets. Maybe that will improve your shooting. I don't know much about basketball but I've heard that seven-up improves shots, too. Of the reforms especially for the girls, the first and most important will be the abolition of uni- forms. There will be several powder rooms and a club room exclusively for ladies. I meant to say women, because it is for all of the girls. We had planned to give each girl a bouquet of a dozen roses for a Christmas present but because of in- creased prices our budget will not be sufficient to give a full dozen roses to each girl. I hope you will be satisfied with the four roses we can afford. That's about all I can say about the new school at this time since I am getting down to the bottom of the page. QI hope.j Perhaps your favorite improve- ment has not been included in our plans but if you write your suggestion on the back of a dollar bill and mail it to the author of this page you may be assured that it will receive the fullest consideration. All suggestions become the property of the author and will not be returned. We would welcome any suggestions. Fred Vander Laan '49 6-wa9dtdeZeen4 fTo Ernest Thayer we extend our apologies for desecrating the tale of his famed Casey At the Bat j. Itlooked extremely rocky for our freshman class that day - The clock did strike, the bell did ring, the room looked bleak and gray, So when the students took their place, anticipating doom A pallor wreathed the features of the students in that room. A struggling few got up in front, leading there the rest With hope to start and finish things with vigor and with zest. But we poor unwanted freshies so new upon the scene Were shoved and poked by seniors, we thought that they were mean Than later in our sophimore year our hopes began to climb As in our work and social life we made the most of time, Our junior year had stirred us one step closer on to fame, The I-Hop soon had proved to all that we had earned a name. Our boys defeated Christian to the wonderment of all- Our junior year then passed from view now only to recall, And when the dust had lifted, and we saw what had occurred We'd made the grade as seniors, our voices we made heard. There was ease in senior manner as we stepped into our place There was pride in senior bearing and a smile on senior face, And when responding to the cheers we lightly dojfed our hats, No stranger in the crowd could doubt 'twas a senior at the bat. But we knew we needed leaders so we started to campaign Was it Active or Progressive that in the end would reign? We weighed their merits carefully, for we would not vote wrong, The victors were our Zoellner, Cebelak, Hallacy and Long. Football! Benches black with people. There went up a mighty roar Like the beating of the storm on the stern and distant shore, Fight, fight, hght that team shouted seniors from the stand, And our Cougars fought to victory under Sowle's majestic hand. Ten thousand eyes were on us as we made our plans with care, Ten thousand hands applauded as the music filled the air, Abel and Lovell were chosen, and as queen and king were hailed, And when Homecoming night was o'er we knew we hadn't failed. Gala Night had come at last, our booths we did arrange And with smiles of Catholic charity we gladly gave our change, Then too, our Christmas party had finally come in view, And as the months flew swiftly by, the days of school grew few. The smile is gone from senior lips, our eyes are hlled with tears, We leave our school to face the world, and banish all our fears, And now the juniors hold the ball, for we have let it go, And now the air is shattered by the force of such a blow. Oh, somewhere in this favored land the sun is shining bright, Our band is playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are lightg And somewhere men are laughing, and somewhere students shout, But there's no joy in Catholic, mighty seniors have struck out. Departing from the usual procedure of an initial staff meeting, the members, equipped with para- phernalia for moving and renovating, converted part of the former faculty convent into a modern, convenient Spires House. Kind Monsignor Murphy, our principal, made pos- sible our new sanctumg good Father LaPres came to our assis- tance by producing suitable chairs and tables out of the nowhere. Sister Irene, our adviser, smiled approvingly upon the vast improvement over previous years. Regaled with hot chocolate and doughnuts, we exchanged mops and brooms for pencils and assignment books. Keyed to the highest pitch of enthusiasm we launched our project dedicating the hard work ahead to Our Lady of Fatima. Conscientiously we attacked the intricacies of planning and constructing the many pages of the book with an eagerness that defies competition. We are now ready to share with you the results of our efforts. Before you close this book we wish to impress upon you that we are beaming with gratitude for the kindnesss-hown us by Monsignor Murphy, Father LePres and our good Father Heyer who worked throughout the entire year gathering the many coppers necessary to pay for the book, Prominent too, on our list of benefactors is Mr. Alvin C. Burkle of the Dean Hicks Printing Company, who assisted us in the capacity of teacher, director and friend. Likewise shall be ever be grate- ful for the gracious courtesy extended us by the personnel of the Versluis studio especially for the patience and efficiency exhibited by Mr. Bill Huges. To our adviser and friend Sister Irene, we sing a song of appreciation for everything, snacks included. May the years ahead be replete with happy memories of the days spent at Catholic Central. And what more can We, the staff, hope for than that the Spires of 1949-shall serve as the medium to reminisce the events of our high school years. Bye now! Barb and Bob.
