XX I' ,l 5 ,if- Our Annual Retreat Among the many and varied spiritual opportunities offered to Catholic Central students, the annual Retreat holds first place in the hearts and minds of both faculty and pupils. Three days of meditation upon the great truths of our holy Re- ligiong conferences on voca- tions, and concentration on the duties of our state in life serve to strengthen the spiritual struc- ture of all who are enrolled une der the banner of C. C. The retreat of 1946 was our last one. Who of us can ever forget the zeal and sincerity manifested by the rugged and earnest Father McCaffery, O. P., who Warned us that no matter how many years may be ahead of us, Some day you are going Home. V' 'S all Y .N .AY 5 X .I On the morning ot lanuary 25, the clos- ing day of the Retreat, l4OU Catholic Cen- tral students received Holy Communion in a body. ln the afternoon the Blessed Sacrament was exposed during Holy Hour in Which the students participated with hymns and prayers. Benediction by the Rev. William Murphy was the final retreat ceremony. The l946 Retreat concluded with the renewal ot Baptismal vows and the impressive Papal blessing by the Rev. McCaffery. Rev. The sun is rising beyond the distant hillsg uncertainty shades the dawn as we advance into the light. We are Freshmen jostling in a crowd of unfamiliar faces, experiencing the friendships of many new acquaintances and becoming only partially aware of the significance of our first retreat. The fore-noon becomes radiant in the light of our ambition. As Sophomores we begin to sense our purpose. We greet our new spiritual leader, the Most Reverend Bishop Haas, with sincere enthusiasm. Catholic Central reaches a new goal in attendance, we now number eleven hundred and fifty. The sun high in the heavens announces that midday has descended. ln the glory of our noon-tide we dream the plans of the future. With pardonable pride we Iuniors announce that the greatest num- ber of winners in the Bishops High School Fund Essay Contest are from our ranks. We promote our first social event the I-Hop. Our love and respect for Catholic Central has taken root. Reluctantly we view the evening shadows descending upon our firm society of nearly three hundred members. Now we are aim- ing for the future, but so little time remains to plan and work. Father William Murphy returns as the self-sacrificing principal. After promoting a unique and vigorous campaign the clamoring seniors choose: president, Gerald l-louseman, vice-president, Nancy Moriarty, secretary, Rosemary Vogt, and treasurer, Casimir Polkowski. Gala Night festivities, and the two all-Senior parties are treasures of remembrance. We are proud of our All-State Sportsmen, Gerry McGovern and Casey Polkowski. The world is again at peace, synonymous with the peace of soul we experience after our annual retreat. The shadows deepen and a few stars appear to lend their enchantment to our dances- the Homecoming, Sno-Shuffle, and Spring Swing. Crdinarily just another day would be passing into the realms of eternity, but there has been a radiant sunset bringing with it the promises of a glorious future. As this day ebbs away, we think with consoling re- membrance of tasks accomplished. Dimly we see each senior boy and girl cautiously advancing to his particular goal in life. ln prayerful thanksgiving for our Catholic edu- cation, we offer Almighty God this complete day. Tomorrow, we go forth to test our worth, remembering that we have been educated for democracy. Rosemary Vogt '46 f Lf' nf' 1 H eff' V I My f tr .1 .guru A ,V H y ' ARLENE ADAMZAK st. Adalbert , ' . CITY CHAMPIONS City Charnpionsl These two words symbolized the type of aggressive football which our Sheldon Ave. Aggregation dis- played on the gridiron. It not only meant laurels for the players but also to the school it represented a season's work, backing the Cougars to the very last. Taking it on the chin for two consecutive weeks at Mus- kegon, when the Big Reds started with a 13-7 verdict and the Heights Tigers wound it up with a 21 to 13 tally, Catholic bounced back with renewed force to make a clean sweep of the G. Pt. teams and proceed to cop the city title. lt did not take the fans long to realize that the Cougars were out for blood after witnessing a literal massacre of Creston's Polar Bears to the wild and Wooly score of 34 to 7. The Sowie-men would still be scoring T.D.'s if there had not been a final gun. Ottawa's surprise victory over a powerful 1944 Catholic eleven was avenged, and then some, as C. C. took over with a 33 to 0 shutout, that the East-enders will never forget. The following week the Blue aggregation continued its winning way by submerging their cousins from Fountain St. under a 20-0 deluge. There was no doubt as to who was the better team that night as Central was completely outplayed from start to finish. Union's weaker eleven did not know what hit them when Catho1ic's Mighty Men waded into them at Houseman field and threw Dynamite all over the place. Before the Hawks could recover from one tally the Cougars would chalk up another. lt went on like that until the final gun sounded ending the game with the West-Siders on the short end of a 40-14 verdict. One night that GR. football fans will not forget for a long time is that of November 3. It was on this night that the Pigskin Parade wound up a great season-with Catholic Central being crowned City Charnpsl They showed some 17,000 spectators, that jammed every square inch of House- man field, how the game of football is played, by humbling in bitter defeat a less powerful aggregation from Hall St.- The South High Trojans. That night C.C. could have whip- ped any team in the state. lt was tight from 7:45 until the closing whistle, as the South-Enders were pushed around at will until it was time to throw in the towel. Thus did a great football team stake their claim to a very well deserved city title. TED SOWLE One of the biggest reasons for the Cougars success this year is one Mr. Theodore Sowlel Under the inspiring guidance of this able mentor, our gridiron greats were given the wherewithal to play winning football. Mr. Sowle has been at the Twin C now for three years. ln this time he has built up a record that any coach would like to have. In 1943 he gave Catholic its first State Championship in several years. 1944 was a fundamental year for Mr. Sowle's boys, winding up in a tie for third place. Then 1945 rolled around. Again Ted proved his worth by bring- ing the Sheldon Ave. aggregation up in front of all others and copping his second city title. You can be sure that Mr. Sowle earned these honors, too. Never in my high school years has your writer seen any coach work so hard and diligently for his team. All his spare time was occupied in doing for the boys. With the return of Mr. Edward Killoran, Ted left us. He has been given an opportunity to coach a high school football team in Eire, Pennsylvania. We know he will do just as good work there as he did here, but still this scribe would like to say, Good luck, Ted, and the best of everything to you. May God bless you, in behalf of the student body here at Catholic. To Mr. Killoran we extend our heartfelt greetings and feel certain he will keep C.C. up at the top of the Sports' ladder always. Coach Ted Sowle ALL-STATE Champion teams have champion players but with the Cougars we find three men that are outstanding in their jobs. This was proved when Sports Scribes from all over the State awarded coveted All-State honors to lerry tMacl McGovern '46, Casimir fCaseyl Polkowski '46, and Edward Iames CE. ll Owens '47. The pigskin experts from the Detroit Free Press scanned the State's schools and elected Ierry McGovern as the best right tackle for 1945. Casey Polkowski's ability was soon recognized and he became the Associated Press' selec- tion for No. 1 right end. His aggressiveness on defense was outstanding throughout the season. Catholics Red Grange, lr., the Gallopin' Ghost from the Twin C , or in other words, E. I. Owens, was spotted by the Detroit Times' experts and was chosen Michigan's Mr. Big of all right halves from a field of many backs. This fleet-footed, flashy flame well de- serves his award. . qv 'Nl -.. -...U fcn- Hv' X 'Q-3- 'f Casimir Polkowski Gerald McGovem E. I. The fast shifting backfield consisting of Shutich, De Vrent, and Stoffer, succeeded in rornping consistently into touchdown land. The second half was an entirely dif- ferent story with Catholic giving way to the Indians for 2 touchdowns while scoring one. The Twin C boys suffered a tough set back when Frank Red Reilly, rugged sophomore center was placed on the casualty list. This boy had led the forward wall all year and had been the 1ine's big gun. The cubs, however, despite their loss continued their winning ways with Dick Pins filling in the gap. - Creston ..... U - Ottawa ..... 13 - Central ..... COUGARS ON THE COURTS Although Catholic Central's Cougars didn't claw their way to the top rung in city Basketball contests, as they so grandly did on the gridiron, they provided heated com- petition for the opposition. With E, l. Killoran back after three years in the service of the Navy, Catholic had one of the best quint instructors in the city. Draugelis, Boggiano, Polkowski, Duba and Tietema were starters in most of the games. Win or lose, these boys never let go the reigns of courage, but ever tried to pro- mote the spirit of Catholic's heroes of the past. Upon arriving at the State Capitol for their initial con- test, the Sheldon Avenue boys found that the Lansing Sexton aggregation had Written defeat all over the welcome mat. The Boys in Blue came home with their heads bowed Catholic came to the foreground by a victory at the expense of the Christian quintet with the amazing score of 48 to 24. At this game, Catholics first league encounter, Boggiano paced the Boys in Blue with 12 tallies, but Draugelis and Stoddard were not far behind. The Union Redhawks' scoring apparatus was completely stalled when the Cougars shoved their machine in high gear and steamrolled over the defending champs by the score of 38 to 15. Members of the Redhawk quintet were so completely stunned that a field goal was not flipped through the white meshes until six minutes after intermission. The South High Trojans were on the rampage as they walked over the highly-rated Catholic quint 36 to 28. This was the initial defeat of the title-aspirant Cougars. The game was a knockdown-drag-out, rugged fray from start to finish, as the keyed-up Patterson-coached boys kept up their terrific pace, until the final buzz. There was a close contest as the scrappy cagers from Catholic whirled their basketball talents out, and pulled the game out of the unsuspecting hands of the Creston Polar Bears, to the tune of 28 to 26. lt was lim Command of the Bears that kept his team in the game and Ed Draugelis, our lean, long, lanky center, who paced Cath- olic at the foul line, South Highs Trojans were just too much for our fighting Cougars as they emerged on the long end of a 35 to 26 score. Catholic was outscored in all but the second Canto when Draugelis and Duba hit the loop for seven points. Although they were not the victors, the Sheldon Avenue boys deserve much credit for the clean hard-fought battle. Eugene Duba and Holwerda of South shared the scoring honors with eight tallies apiece, The Creston Polar Bears edged out the Catholic Central Cougars in the Parochials Gym as the scoreboard showed 38 to 36. The Ottawa indians showed proof of their worth as they downed the Catholic Cagers 46 to 36 at the East Enders' Gym Even though Catholic was constantly losing, they still showed their Cougar teeth and spirit. Coach Claus Beukema was presented a victory at the Burton Gym when the Christian Eagles outpointed the Boys in Blue 31 to 23. The Eagles were supposedly underdogs but their spirit brought about the final outcome. It was Unions turn the night of February 5 as they whipped the Twin C aggregation 43 to 26 at the Parochials' Gym. This was a recompense deal as they had been shown the depths of defeat by the Cougars earlier in the cage season.
