H The l958 SHAMROCK 1. - 4 DEDICATIQN TO THE NUNS who teach in our parochial schools who initiated us into the Catholic School system, in deepest 1? appreciation Nuns come in assorted sizes, weights, and wimples. They are found everywhere - swathed in, seated in ing down, perspiring over, shopping for, patrolling along Qt. Little children idolize them, teen-agers puzzle them, non-Catholics gawk at them, and St. Joseph looks after A Nun is Faith with chalk on her hands, Hope with a her hair clipped short. A Nun has the neatness of a pin, the trust of a child, the perseverance of a bill collector, the energy of a vest pocket atomic bomb the authority of an encyclopedia, and the versatility of a trouble shooter She loves the Blessed Mother, likes a good meditation book ice cream Friday af ternoons, a letter from home, and free days. She is not too keen on summer school long sermons, correcting home work, getting up early, or grumpy pastors No one else is so quick to praise, so slow to censure. No one else can give you a licking and cry while she is doing it. No one else can tell stories or skip rope or write on the blackboard so well. A Nun is a wonderful creature. You can dirty up her class room but her devotion remains unsullied. You can sass her back, but her prayers for you are redoubled You can tax her patience, but never deny her influence for good A Nun is all this and more is God's sweetheart and its no wonder that He loves her. 5 Q THE CATHCLIC SCHOOL EXISTS Life should be a Dedication to God . Ambition should be the Pathway to God The Mind should be the Mirror of God . Activity should be the Service of God . The Body should be the Temple of God. It traces the origin of our rights and duties back to God. These schools can follow out to the full the recommendation of the Northwest Ordinance to make progress in religion, morality, and knowledge, the clearly expressed ob- iectives of their program. EDWARD CARDINAL MOONEY, Archbishop of Detroit. But the clear results of these last decades have proved to be unfavorable to the school without reli- gion, which is, in fact, or comes to be, anti-religious. This type of school, according to the experiences of the past century, of the present, too, has produced some bitter fruits, and therefore has failed in its true purpose, on the other hand, for almost two thousand years, Christian education has gloriously overcome all the trials. His Holiness, POPE PIUS XII. 'UNQB You have been fortunate during your school years to have been in a country where your education was a free expression, not government dictation. Because of this, you have acquired the three most important R's of education: Reason: Think about the cause and the results, plan your action accordingly. Respect: For those to whom respect is due: God, country, home, fellow-men. Responsibility: Shoulder your responsibility as good Christians and enlightened citizens in this challenging world. LOUIS C. MIRIANI, Mayor of Detroit. Catholic Central High School is proud to O WQQA1 , E 5. You have been fortunate in having been given an opportunity to receive a Catholic high school edu- cation. By all means continue your Catholic educa- tion in a Catholic institution of learning. Religion plays a very important role in the school in which you have been educated. Today religion is an emphatic part of the American way. Americans are identifying themselves more widely and more readily with religion than they have for decades. The Catholic school is no longer regarded as some- thing subversive, inferior, and un-American. Your credits and your diploma will command the same respect as those issued by any other school. More and more non-Catholics are regarding the Catholic school with growing interest. They are be- ginning to realize that education from which religion is excluded is simply no education at all. This is a conviction which Catholics have always believed and maintained. Protestants and Jews, in increasing numbers, are looking on religionless education as utterly impos- sible. They are looking to the religious school as the only solution of an intolerable situation. Thank God that you have had the opportunities of the Catholic school during the years past. You have had the best education that your parents could give. Be grateful for this wonderful privilege and let your life and the career your choose reflect the training that your Church and your home has pro- vided. May God bless you and keep you always. Your Principal, Father Regan. :again .Mew 2. ' ,ny 'ik n ,,-ha' tk?- E f K M W 5 H' . 2 M S 5 as . X- .Q 1 f 1 yn ' , 4. ' W .N Q ' 3, .4 , Q A N I . ' ,, J D 1 ' E Q. Now we must use them to unlock the door to our special place in God's plan. If we fit our key in the right door it will open to us a rich, happy, Christian life, and will eventually help us to unlock the gate of heaven. Seniors, the key is ours! They are carefully instructed by Mr. Bader in the rubrics for the various liturgical services. But what God must smile on most in appreciation is their unselfishness in sacrificing sleep in the morning to come to the chapel and serve the many Masses said there long before the school day begins. 60 4' 0 'Q 'fo oo 'iv 'Q 'Q kv . John Bosco's Sacristans Club 'Q The St. John Bosco Sacristans Club is probably one of the hardest working and least heralded organization in the school. Under the direction of Father Donoherm, who is the school sacristan, these men of St. John Bosco sacrifice many hours of their time to keep the Chapel so impeccably clean. They also prepare the altars each day for the Masses which will be celebrated at them the following morning. s Q 0 9 4 0 ' ' Q st t t t oo 's ee s' . 0 , , 0 6 , Father Donoher instructs the school sacristans: Back: T. On the last two days of Passion Week the Freshmen and Sophomores were treated to this experience with Father James Trepanier, C. S. C. of Holy Cross Seminary, Notre Dame, Indiana as retreat master. During the first three days of Holy Week the Seniors and Juniors made their Retreat directed by the sage guidance ol Father James Martin, C. S. B. Father Martin who is currently stationed at Holy Rosary Church, Toronto, Ontario, is a household name here at Catholic Central where he was Ath- letic Director for nearly twenty years. Our thanks and prayers go out to both Father Trepanicr and Father Martin for helping to make us better men. ESR, REV. humbly kneel before thee to beg for the all-important grace of making a proper choice of a state in life. I seek nothing else but the perfect accomplishment of the Will of thy Divine Son through my whole life. I ardently desire to choose that state which will make me happiest at the hour of my death. O Mother of Good Counsel, speak to me a word of guidance, so that all doubt may leave my mind. Since thou art the Mother of my Savior, be also the Mother of my salvation. If thou, O Mary, wilt not shed upon me a ray of the Divine Sun, what other light will clear up my way? lf thou, O Mother of the lncarnate Wisdom, wilt not instruct me, who then will teach me? Give ear, then, O Mary, to my humble prayer. Doubtful and wavering, I beseech thee to direct me, to guide me along the path that leads to eternal life, for thou art the Mother of true love, holy fear, knowledge, and blessed hope, whose blossoms bring forth fruits of holy purity and honesty. Amen.' 3 t you s...-.M , EDWARDS BROTHERS. Am. Arbor, rvmi-igan PQ i i r 5 g 5 1 3-5 34 W- Y- W- ,. - -,,., 7--ff . 5
