v hahdnau- --L E5 33 f 1 9 4 2 gather fmbaerid Jlledaage to graduated Fortitude is one of the four Cardinal virtues, it is also one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. It is that virtue which deals with the arduous. The man of fortitude is he who will not be vanquished, he will not be set aside from his purpose by obstacles which may come his way. The work of this virtue is the courageous overcoming of the difficulties and burdens of life, the greatest of which is the laboring for hours year after year at the same work, which becomes monotonous and tire- some and from which we see but little result. This is hard for human nature. It is so easy to begin a work with enthusiasm but we slacken off when the freshness has gone. It is against this tendency in our nature that the virtue and gift of fortitude is given to us. The gift of fortitude is that calm and confident trust which excludes fear of failure. This divine help is essential as everyday experience teaches us. We begin with a flourish but it is so difficult to continue with enthusiasm. Human nature demands results. lt is spurred on by success. The gift of fortitude enables us to go on and on working quietly in forgetfulness of results and leaving the result to God. A boy who is going to make a worth while man must develop the virtue of fortitude and pray for the fullness of this gift of the Holy Spirit. There is no vocation in life which does not demand both the virtue and the gift since difficult crosses are the portion of every life in this world. You have finished the high school period of training. Tomorrow's world will present its new life and problems. For some it will be a university course with its long hours of study, for others years in the army, navy or marines, a hard life with difficult training and with results and the reward in the far distant future, for others the family life which will demand the accomplishment of the same tasks over and over again. You will begin with a flourish, how will you continue? The virtue and the gift of fortitude will give you the interest and enthusiasm to make any life a success. Our Lord the exemplar of all virtues is our model. He had more difficulties to overcome and suffering to endure than any one of us will ever have. He beheld the arduous work which seemed impossible for Him to accomplish. He did not give in. He was not conquered. He simply prayed the longer because he was in agony. May the graduates of 1942 be like your Master, Men of Fortitude. lf you are-you will work the best when the burden is heaviest, you will study the longest when it is difficult to study, you will overcome temptation when it is hardest to overcome, you will pray the longest when there are no consolations. The greater the difficulty the more zealous will you be to overcome it. You will then take the kingdom of heaven by storm which is arduous and requires years of enthusiastic and zealous effort in overcoming hard things.
