Zylwmad Jlloze By WILLIAM BRODERICK One great blot on the history of English Catholicism was the failure of all but two of the outstanding English Cath- olics of the time to oppose Henry VIII and his schismatic scheme. This, however, only serves to make these two, Thomas More and Bishop John Fisher, all the more out- standing. The result of the heroic action of these two was death on the scaffold for each. Thomas More was born in London in 1478, the son of a prominent lawyer. More received an excellent educa- tion, attending Cambridge, and at his father's behest, studied law. His success in this field soon attracted the attention of men prominent in English Court circles, in- cluding Henry VIII himself. During his increasingly successful career, More, a mar- ried man, did not neglect the spiritual side of his family. Every night they recited part of the daily office together. In addition, a private chapel was always maintained in the More household. Henry VIII, after deposing Cardinal Wolsey as his chan- cellor, invited More to become WoIsey's successor. Re- Iuctantly, and with a vow never to act against his princi- ples, More acceded. Soon after More's appointment, Henry broke with Rome, and all prominent Englishmen were compelled to take the oath of supremacy to the king. More and Bishop Fisher refused. Even after he was condemned to death, More retained his cheerfulness. On the scaffold, he instructed the exe- cutioner to be careful of his beard. For, he said, it has never committed treason. In these perilous times, St. Thomas More's staunch avowal of Catholicism, even to the extent of dying rather than lose it, should serve us as an example of fidelity. Towards this we can turn our eyes and perhaps find some measure of peace and hope in a war torn world which has almost lost all hope. I I+' 5 smermnoclc St. fofzn giallefz By ARTHUR WALIGORE Unus duorum -St. John Fisher deserves the distinction of being one of two among prominent Catholics who refused to bow to Henry VIIl's edict of Supremacy. The son of a merchant, he was born in Beverley, York- shire, England in 1459. After an elementary education in a parochial school, Cambridge graduated him with a B. A. in 1487. His M. A. followed in 1497. Soon after his ordination, his connection with the royal family began. To Margaret, the mother of Henry VIII he was confessor and counselor. But a zeal for learning was a consuming ambition. Acting in the capacity of Chan- cellor of Cambridge, he was instrumental in founding St. John's and Christ's College, Cambridge. In recognition of his personal piety and zeal, in 1504 he was raised to the Bishopric of Rochester. That same year also saw him Chancellor-elect of Cambridge. lt was he who encouraged Erasmus to establish classical studies at Cambridge. To Henry Vlll, with whom he had had so many wrangles, he was tutor. During the nefarious affairs of Henry in ridding himself of his lawful wife, Bishop Fisher devoted his great talents of oratory and writing to open criticism of the King's action. Because of Fisher's refusal to uphold the King's divorce, he incurred the enmity of Henry. After Cranmer as new Arch- bishop-elect had declared the divorce valid, a series of encroachments on Church property followed. When a poison attempt on the life of Fisher had failed in 1531, Henry, because of the influence Fisher had l1ad, confined Fisher to the Tower and confiscated his property when he refused to take the oath of supremacy. Even the high dignity of Fisher's office did not save him from Henry's wrath. Indeed, the Bishop was tried as a commoner on charges of treason. The court punishment was death by hanging, however, the sentence was altered. ln 1534 he was decapitated and his head displayed to the public on London Bridge. As he lived, so he died, courageously and calmly, ex- emplifying to the very end the attributes of the true martyr. L 34 HIS EXCELLENCY EDWARD MOONEY, D.D Archbishop of Defroif l Srmcnnocn L 1 0 4 9 3 REVEREND J. W. EMBSER, C.S.B. Principal ffff .f v hahdnau- --L E5 33 f 1 9 4 2 gather fmbaerid Jlledaage to graduated Fortitude is one of the four Cardinal virtues, it is also one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. It is that virtue which deals with the arduous. The man of fortitude is he who will not be vanquished, he will not be set aside from his purpose by obstacles which may come his way. The work of this virtue is the courageous overcoming of the difficulties and burdens of life, the greatest of which is the laboring for hours year after year at the same work, which becomes monotonous and tire- some and from which we see but little result. This is hard for human nature. It is so easy to begin a work with enthusiasm but we slacken off when the freshness has gone. It is against this tendency in our nature that the virtue and gift of fortitude is given to us. The gift of fortitude is that calm and confident trust which excludes fear of failure. This divine help is essential as everyday experience teaches us. We begin with a flourish but it is so difficult to continue with enthusiasm. Human nature demands results. lt is spurred on by success. The gift of fortitude enables us to go on and on working quietly in forgetfulness of results and leaving the result to God. A boy who is going to make a worth while man must develop the virtue of fortitude and pray for the fullness of this gift of the Holy Spirit. There is no vocation in life which does not demand both the virtue and the gift since difficult crosses are the portion of every life in this world. You have finished the high school period of training. Tomorrow's world will present its new life and problems. For some it will be a university course with its long hours of study, for others years in the army, navy or marines, a hard life with difficult training and with results and the reward in the far distant future, for others the family life which will demand the accomplishment of the same tasks over and over again. You will begin with a flourish, how will you continue? The virtue and the gift of fortitude will give you the interest and enthusiasm to make any life a success. Our Lord the exemplar of all virtues is our model. He had more difficulties to overcome and suffering to endure than any one of us will ever have. He beheld the arduous work which seemed impossible for Him to accomplish. He did not give in. He was not conquered. He simply prayed the longer because he was in agony. May the graduates of 1942 be like your Master, Men of Fortitude. lf you are-you will work the best when the burden is heaviest, you will study the longest when it is difficult to study, you will overcome temptation when it is hardest to overcome, you will pray the longest when there are no consolations. The greater the difficulty the more zealous will you be to overcome it. You will then take the kingdom of heaven by storm which is arduous and requires years of enthusiastic and zealous effort in overcoming hard things. I E. . ., JERRY H. ARMSTRONG DONALD G. BEAUFAIT J. McALLlSTER Retreat Master For the third time in four years, we were honored with the presence of a Holy Cross Father to lead our three-day Retreat, held during Holy Week. The time of the Retreat is very appropriate, coming as it does during the season of penance, and enabling us to prepare ourselves better for our spiritual melioration. Father McAllister, C.S.C., of the University of Notre Dame, was both interesting and instruc- tive in the conferences which were held in the Cathedral. Among the subjects discussed were the Commandments, Sin, Death, and Confession. His was a general theme dealing briefly but effectively with each topic under discussion. The singing of the students during Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament was favorably compared with the singers at Notre Dame. At the close of the Retreat, we received the Papal Blessing and had articles of devotion blessed. In addition, all who so desired, were enrolled in the Seven Scapulars. ln an interview after the Retreat, Father McAllister revealed that he frequently travels during Missions and Retreats with Father Foran, C.S.C., who led our Retreat here two years ago. He also spoke affectionately of his work of pounding the pulpit, and expressed a desire to return again to Detroit soon. We found too, that he had taught Biology and Greek at Notre Dame for thirteen years, and was once Rector of Holy Cross Seminary at Notre Dame. He said he preferred preaching to teaching because he did not have to correct examination papers. Father McAllister told us of his Order's missionary activities in India, very near the scene of the present Far Eastern conflict. We wish him every success in his Retreat activities and hope that he may some day lead us in another equally successful Retreat. WILLIAM BRODERICK. Michael Qallaglzez Jffiadion unit In these days of armed international strife, the intensity of the fray and the need of every- one's help is brought home to the populace. Radio and the newspaper devote their facilities whole-heartedly, civilians freely and eagerly invest life savings in their cause. Yet of the conflict for international peace and Christian brotherhood, we in all countries seem ignorant or indifferent. This greatest and noblest of all struggles has been going on for nearly two thousand years. Ignorance of God and His saving precepts, the bigotries and superstitions of peoples are the foes that must be conquered. Great gains have been made, on many fronts the enemy's siege has been broken and his cohorts put to flight. Consolidation of gains is in progress. Indeed the communiques are heartening and ioyous. But quare laetare ? On other fronts the foe cavorts and because of his fortified position and great following defies the assaults of Chris- tianity. Are these regions never to be brought under the sweet yoke of Christ? The battle is a spiritual one but requires physical aid. To combat enemy legions, soldiers of Christ need spiritual re-enforcements as well as material supplies. Let us as followers and brethren of Christ support his heroes with all possible assistance both spiritual and material. The Society for the Propagation of the Faith and the Catholic Student Mission Crusade have concentrated their efforts on real aid to the front line battlersp the former specializing in the material, the latter in the spiritual manner. The student body can proudly say of these organiza- tions, quorum parva pars sum. For this third year's campaign of the Michael Gallagher Unit has surpassed in both phases the records of former years. The offiters of the Unit, President Arthur Waligore, Vice-President Paul Sweeney, Secretary Joe L'Abbe and Treasurer Robert Riker, and the director, Father W. J. Murphy, C.S.B., are proud of the underclassmen who have made their position admirable. ARTHUR WALIGORE. BACK ROW George Dietrick Arthur Beyer James Marshall James Krueger Wm. In his writings one can find paradox, humor, and wisdom. The most noticeable thing about Chesterton's writings, however, is his spirit of Christian charity. As Hilaire Belloc truly said, He approached con- troversy, his delight, hardly ever as a conflict, nearly always as an appreciation, including that of his opponent. Chesterton's works were multiple and varied. Numbered among his writings were essays, biographies, novels, his- tories, and poems. The best of these include Orthodoxy, The Man Who Was Thursday, and Lepanto. This last, to quote Belloc again is the summit of high rhetorical verse in all our generation. Born of typical Victorian parents, Chesterton spent his early life in agnosticism and socialism. Later he found his way into the Angelicon Church, where he remained for many years. During this time, he took an active interest in politics and journalism along with his brother Cecil and his friend Belloc. It was at this period in his life that he be- came intimate with Father John O'Conner, a Catholic priest. From him he learned, to his surprise, that the Church not only knew more about good, but also about evil, than did he himself. This priest, who became the inspiration for Chesterton's Father Brown stories, was eventually the cause of Chesterton's conversion. From 1922 on, he took up the cause of Catholicism, and defended it brilliantly against such intellectuals as George Bernard Shaw. Shaw, although a life-long foe of Chester- ton, termed him a man of colossal genius. When a tribute like this comes from such an unexpected source, there can be little doubt that Gilbert Chesterton will rank among the great, both as an author and as a Catholic. ,E enumnoan folln Nenzg Cardinal Newman By ARTHUR WALIGORE Lead kindly Light, amid the encircling gloom . . . The outcrying of a soul in darkness lamenting for guid- ance. Of this soul-searching clamor the author was John Henry Newman, who was born in London in 1801. Cal- vinism was the maternal religion, but Henry had no defin- ite religious convictions until he was fifteen although he had read the Bible from an early age. The night is dark and I am far from home. .... Superstitition affected his boyhood, and his temperament included a deep reserve. A feeling that he was called to be a missionery led him to abandon law for the min- istry. Accordingly, in 1824 he was ordained and in 1828 he was appointed rector at St. Mary's. Here he endeared himself to the students with his wonderful lectures. Poli- tics interested him only in so far as they affected the church. l do not ask to see the distant scene. ...... But a far greater result of his rectorship was his becom- ing familiar with Catholic truths via Anglican theses. Thus, later on, we find him leading a movement to make Angli- :anism join with Catholicism. l loved the garish way. Pride ruled my will. . . . Humbling his will and following his reason, Newman in 1841 left Anglicanism in search of the true Faith. For four years he stood on the threshold of the Catholic Church. ln 1845 he sincerely spoke I believe and in 1846 was or- dained a priest. This conversion rocked England. He turned his talents to a defense of Catholicism by his Apol- ogia . But he was even here met with opposition from all sides. Yet in spite of criticism he persevered in his new- found Faith. Lead thou me on. ............ For almost 30 years the great and constructive work of Newman was met with suspicion and went unrewarded. But in 1879 from the ranks of a priest he was raised by Pope Leo Xlll to the Sacred College of Cardinals. The light of eternity shone on him in 1890. wif ' x if VARSITY I A C.C.H.Y 8 .
