OUR EVER MOVING GOALS The wheel of life is forever turning, turning, toward that ever moving goal. We will experience the fundamental things as a new born foal. As we go along thru life, we will gather friends as one would gather stones. There will be times of love and hate, no matter how the world may turn. Let’s hope for peace and not for war, as we carry on for those before. We’ll do our part to plant and reap, and try to laugh instead of weep. We the Senior class of 1970 are going out into the world because it is a time for us. Let us not shirk the responsibility of making our A merica a better place in which to live—-for there is a time and season for every purpose under heaven. Where there had been more than 3,100 screaming fans only 45 minutes before, now there were fewer than 25 persons re- maining in the Eastern Mon- tana College fieldhouse. ABOUT A dozen Anaconda Central basketball players were leaning on the walls or resting against the now empty conces- shoes, or the murals on the walls of the foyer, or seemingly nothing at all. A cheerleader looked into the stack of megaphones she was holding — searching, perhaps, for two points. Coach Dean Roberts made the long walk to the other end of the lobby to retrieve his coat from the office, then started back to rejoin the other adults who were visiting in hushed tones near the door. The serenity of the moment was suddenly shattered by 20 month-old Michael Roberts, as he spotted his father coming down the ball. sion stands. Roberts and his wife stopped to visit tor a few moments with the few Anaconda Central fans who remind clustered in the middle of the lobby, but this was too much tor young Mike. He began to cry, for it was af- ter 11 p.m., and he didn't know anything about two points. Slowly, the group moved out of the lobby, through the long, dark tunnel to the’ parking lot and the long ride back to the motel. TWO POINTS. One basket. A pair of free throws. A team makes hundreds of them during the season, thousands more dur- ing practice. Yet it's the one bucket that they didn't get that will be the difference between a successful season and a great one for Ana- conda Central in 1870. The Saints were ranked at or near the top of the Associated Press Class A power poll all season. They played for the championship of the Western Division, and while Whitefish defeated them, there was still plenty of hope for a state championship in the Saints' camp. Guard Tom Matosich injured his left ankle in the semifinal game of that tourney in Missou- la against Libby and was un- able to play in the title game. The following Monday, Univer- sity of Montana trainer Naseby Rhinehart telephoned with sug- gested treatment of the injury and Matosich was ready tor the state tourney, though the ankle was hurting. Then the Saints ran into a fired up Laurel Locomotive squad, last year’s champions of the now defunct Big 32. After being down by 14 points in the third quarter, Anaconda Central came back to trail by only one, 59-58, with 34 seconds to play in the game. Laurel increased its lead to 69-58 with 16 seconds remain- ing, and that’s the way it end- ed. The scrambling Saints got off four frantic shots in less than 10 seconds at the end but all were off the mark. AND SO the hopes for a stato championship went out the win- dow. But one game does not make a season. Tomorrow is another day, and there will be another game. It's just that the rewards of a victory will not be as sweet.
