HE PLANS for a new Anaconda Catholic Central High School were announced last January in both parishes by Rt. Rev. Msgr. John B. Pirnat and Rev. Joseph F. Schulte. The announcement was made after a conference with the Most Rev. Joseph M. Gilmore, D.D., Bishop of Helena. The three story structure, which will include gymnasium and auditorium, will be located on the corner of Third and Cherry Streets, a site which was previously occupied by the Knights of Columbus Hall. A part of the cost of erecting the building will be borne by a bequest of $125,000 from the late Mr. William Weiss, for the education of Catholic students. A financial drive has been set up for the additional cost of the building, $300,000. TOWERS As YEARBOOK theme provides a point ol view Irom which to regard the school term, we students of Catholic Central Higli School have chosen towers — the towers ol principles and high ideals, from which to look at our scholastic life — religious, in- tellectual. social and athletic. From this vantage point, extending our ga e to the limits ol our town, we realize our lives as pupils are unavoidably com- mingled with the community’s. Yes, even with the activities ol tlie world beyond the rim of our mountain-encircled city. The turrets on our school stand for peaks of knowledge we have glimpsed. Our education in these tower-bearing walls pre- pares us to weigh in the scale of eternal values, the ways of men, and to take our place in the world for the purpose of making it better. With such towerwork become part and parcel of our phi losophy. Ours are gate towers. The Students’ Catholic Action Convention was held in Butte this year, at Boys’ Central, St. Patrick’s Church, and the Fox Theatre, toward the end of September. All Catholic secondary schools throughout the state were well repre- sented. The day’s program opened with the Missa Recitata, followed by a general assembly, under Father O’Neill’s guidance, at which the after- noon separate sessions were previewed. At the final gathering. Bishop Gilmore reiterated the Pope’s appeal for action, now, and His hopes for global reconstruction via America’s parochial- trained youth. His Excellency presented each school w i t h a colored portrait o f the Holy Father, to which His Holiness, Pius XII, had attached a special blessing. Benediction followed. ANNUAL DIOCESAN APOLOGETICS CONTEST Geraldine Whelan won the Anaconda Catholic Central competition, March 23. Fifteen Juniors and Seniors took part in the elimination en- deavors, all defending, oratorically, a topic of the faith they chose to elucidate, after many hours of research on the subject. Geraldine, whose topic was “Mercy Killing”, represented the school in the state meet held at the Civic Center Auditorium in Helena, on April 16. She brought back the trophy given to the winner over all the other diocesan secondary school contestants. The “Fighting Saints” had one of the heaviest schedules in their basketball history for the 1949-50 season, but they came through with an impressive record. The Saints opened their season play on December 1 and won eight straight before entering the Butte Central invitational tournament. In that cage meet, although matched against three of the state’s leading Class A teams, they showed their ability by turning back the Helena High Bengals, 60-59, and by just missing against the Bozeman Hawks, 30-28. The Saints finished conference play in the southern Class B division as champions, win- ning six games and losing only to Billings Central. This season, the Saints were coached by LeRoy Davison, a graduate of Illinois State and T exas university. He was assisted by Gene Walsh and Farrell Gallagher. 1949 . . . Their efforts, enthusiasm and thoroughness have made this annual one that long will be remembered, and it sets a high standard as the guide-mark for future annuals of Catholic Central. Because of the excellent work on this annual staff, we as engravers help- ing in the technical production of this book, have found pleasure and pride in having a part in the making of this school year book. The patient and understanding counsel of the adviser to the staff has reflected itself in the work that has been accomplished. To the adviser and to each member of the staff, our sincere congratulations. “A MONTANA INSTITUTION” ASHTON ENCRAVINC COMPANY 112 Hamilton Street Butte, Montana 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 44444 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 44« 444444444444‘4444444444444444444444444444444444444444‘J 444 4« 4 4 4 ;♦ 4 4 44 a44444 4 444444444 4 J 1« • «5 4 2 2 2 4 4 v 2 2 1 ❖ ! 4 2 2 •! 2 2 4 ❖ 2 2« 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4« 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4« 4 4 4 4 4 4 4« 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 y1 jf Congratulations to the CLASS OF “50” 4 • « 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 ST.
