PAT McCARTl-lY Athletic Director Coach Pat McCarthy in his first year at the helm oi Central's athletes produced an enviable record. Through his undying determination to stress even the most minute fundamentals, the Saints were able to place second in both District and Divisional tourneys and thus become eligible for the State tournament. In addition to his regular coaching duties. Coach McCarthy conducts physical education classes for the high school students and the upper grades of the two parochial schools. Mr. McCarthy has won the respect and admiration of all, not only for his coaching ability, but also because of his ex- ample which has been such a help in character building. JOSEPH CALNAN Following the resignation of Coach John Krizan, Joe Calnan, former independent star, accepted the reins of head football coach. Calnan, with a nucleus of a few let- termen, formed the first Class A team to represent the school. Ably assisting him was John T. CHeavyJ Fitzpatrick, who is not only a great instructor but a fav- MICHAEL HAYES JOHIN 'l. FITZPATRICK ored coach among the boys. Coach Fitzpatrick, who also B y assisted in basketball, de- serves a great deal of credit for the success of these teams. Mike Hayes, coach of Central's J. V's, complet- ed his third year at this posi- tion the past season. His coaching is the underlying factor in the success of many of the varsity stars of today. -.4.. The Anaconda Central Saints, after a mediocre season. went on to advance farther in State Class HB competition than any other previous Saint quint. The team. under the guidance of Central's new athletic mentor, Patrick H. Mc- Carthy, had but two returning letter men from last year's District and Divisional Champions. The Central squad journeyed to Dillon for the District 16 tournament. After five hard fought games they came out in second place. From there they traveled to Deer Lodge for the Western Divisional tournament. Again the Saints were compelled to play five games, of which they won four. This gave the Cind- erella Team the second place trophy and the right to enter the State Class B tournament, which was held at Laurel. In the State tournament the Smelter City boys were eliminated after they had won a contest with the Shelby high entry. Co-captains for the Saints this season were Jack Fitzpatrick, junior center, and Don Smet. guard. Both are Well over six feet and both were members of last year's District and Divisional Championship team. Together they controlled the backboards against almost all of Central's opponents and were outstanding both on offensive and defensive play BASKETBALL TEAM First ron J Dillon B Morrrsette J Palakoxich J Fitzpatrick F Greene R Schmidt D lVlcCarthx Second rou Coach McCarths Mgr W Bolkoxatz D Swanson J Flynn D Smet B May C Moran Mgr May Father ONe1ll i l l . . -I . y ' . , , . . . . . . .L .. - 'j ' '.
