That is the theme of the 1955 Crusader. We hope to use these opportunities in the manner of strong and noble people, in order to serve God in this world and to be happy with Him in the next. In our yearbook of 1955, we have endeavored to indicate the use we have made of Muskegon's opportunities in religion, education, the home and recreation thus far, particularly those rich offerings given the students of Catholic Central. It remains for the graduates to use also the advantages, which are offered in Muskegon's industries, civic affairs, and social and cultural activities. We are the co-operators and future designers of these world opportunities which invite to action. We, the second graduating class of Catholic Central, have used and have accepted the challenge presented through the Catholic educa- tion received in Greater Muskegon's Catholic Central, and now go forward to use these world-wide opportunities. - June Martin MM-1 -v'v ' THE MOST REVEREND ALLEN J BABCOCK Bshop of the Docese of Grand Rap ds Cordral congratulatnons to the members of the teaching staff and to each member of the second graduatmg class of Greater Muskegon Catholic Central Hugh School As Bishop of the diocese my heart rs full wnth gratitude to the Catholnc parents and other people of the Muskegon area for glvrng the opportunity for a solrd trarmng an Chrrstnan prmclples to the Catholic youth ln their so Important section of the diocese The progress that has Cathollc education IS a source of edlfrcatlon to everyone rn our diocese Every opportumty whlch Almrghty God rn Hrs goodness sees tat to gave us, carries with It a correspondmg oblrgatron I trust that the members of the 1955 graduating class will recognize therr obligation of putting their falth to work and of bemg Instruments nn the hands of God to dlffuse the truth and charity of Chrnst an whatever frelds their future work wull take them My blessmg to them and my prayers will accompany them nn the future Brshop ot Grand Raprds l i i I I been made in so short a time is marvelous, and the deep interest of all in the cause of I DEDICATIGN To our esteemed Principal the Reverend Louis B LaPres priest of God native of Muskegon and promoter of its interests in spiritual leadership are evidenced in Catholic Central s execu tive administration we the Class of 1955 gratefully dedicate our Crusader l . . Your growth from a small community to a large booming industrial center has been an onward march of progress. Now the St. Lawrence Seaway will bring ship- ping from many lands which will mean a larger population with more and better opportunities. Accompanying this development will be a renewed faith in your future. We, graduating from the high schools of Greater Muskegon, are proud to call you our home. We are ready to help build you into a vast metropolitan area and into a great international center. We are willing to do our share to promote your best interests, and draw God's blessings on you, our great city, Muskegon. - MIKE HANSON THE CITY OF MUSKEGON Out of the north w1nd comes today The questlonmg vo1ce of the past Do the green forests of pme and hemlock st1ll reach for the skresp Do your axes rmg rn the wmtry air? Do you hear Tzmberf and the crash of fallmg trees? That warn1ng 1S no longer heard And summer b1rds nest safely 1n the trees Then lumbermen today can never match the records that we set Who swept the acres clear of trees to burld thzs land You left us nothmg but crumpled forests and a barren land We topped and felled the trees then snaked them to the roads Where steammg horses hauled them to the river banks Your roads are Skl tralls now And Where the great logs once came down the slopes SW1fter than b1rds the sklers sweep and swerve the1r s1ng1ng way Are not your sprmgtlme rlvers hrgh wrth branded logs That swzrl and tangle tzll the rollers break them free? Our peaceful r1vers w1nd through younger Woods And f1shermen enjoy the qulet hours where logs once jammed So our great past IS dead The empty rzvers drzftmg and the sawmzlls st1ll We planned a future for you Dreaming that you would see thls city The lumberzng center of the world How sad that you have farled our plans All IS not lost As the t1des of t1me come and go Your c1ty w1ll r1se to greatness h1gher than you planned Tell me lf autumn woods are flames of scarlet And sunset fades beyond your empty harbor and dyzng streets Nature must l1V6 despzte your zdle hands Woods are st1ll yellow and scarlet 1n the fall And sunset burns beyond the dunes All 1S not dead New hfe new blood are here Factor1es and 1ndustr1es c1rcle the harbor now Taller than any p1nes you ever cut Are the sp1res that reach to the sky The trustmg vo1ce fades w1th the passmg w1nd And we turn to face our tomorrow En Ish XII I il .....l...... . . . Since the days of the fur trader through the period when Muskegon's reign as Lumber Queen of Amer- ica, till today when our industrial city is on the verge of becoming one of the great portals of Democracy, our Muskegon has been the City of Catholic Educational Opportunity. Inspired by our teachers and strengthened by the friendship and associations with our class- mates, we, the pioneer graduates, look ahead with faith and confidence leaving the young but growing traditions of Catholic Central High School to those who follow. The pioneer priest, Father Baraga, built a church on a bluff overlooking Muskegon Lake in 1834. In the following years many blessings were bestowed on Muskegon. Today the Soul of Muskegon functions for Catholics through eight parishes in the city and many in the area. MARY IMMACULATE, PATRONESS OF AMERICA t . 5 Reverend Father l.aPres, Principal, announcing the Annual Retreat. Well, that settles that, said Ron Chan- donnet when his private conference with Reverend Howard Rollencotter, C.P., Re- treat Master, was finished. The second annual Retreat conduct- ed at Catholic Central by Father Rol- lencotter in the newly finished din- ing room transformed into a Chapel forthe occasion, left lasting impres- sions. His closing reminder was full of hope: The basic trouble in America today is worry. People have forgotten the beauti- ful virtue of Hope. Life is not a one-person battle. Our Lord is with you every day. He is standing by, ready to help you live your Faith. I remind you to live your Faith by seeing in the erufified Hands of the Savior, every hope. The union of Christ-like training and Christian democracy provides the vision to cope with difficult situations and reshape world attitudes. Muskegon scenes and possibilities intrigue Kathleen Murray and Anthony Cote. The basic ideas of democra- cy are best studied in local situations. Members of the Civics classes and their in- structors watch with interest as City Manager George Liddle points to the city map and Mayor William Steiner offers explanations of their city government. 55 I pledge allegiance to the flag of the Unitecl States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation, UNDER GOD, ina'izfisihle, with liherty and justice for all. It has been truly a pleasure for us to have been a part of Catholic Central, to watch it grow in stature and spirit in two short years. We wish to thank the Pastors, parents, faculty and student body for their whole-hearted aid and support. To our patrons and subscribers, we give our undying gratitude for helping to make this book possible. The class of 1955 is now his- tory but to the thousands who will follow in our footsteps, we say there is no better place to live H1GAN STA than in Muskegon, the City of HKD J --E- ,TE C World Opportunities.
