By His own will, during the nine months that Mary carried Him, Christ was dependent on her. He was helpless. He could go no where, but where Mary chose to Him . . . Her speaking was His voice take her breathing gave Him His breath: her heart beat- ing gave Him His heart to love with and to break over us. As He needed Mary, today again Christ depends upon men . . . ln the Sacred Host He is literally carried in a man's hands. He wants to be everywhere that people are. But He can- not be there unless we bring Him . . . unless we ourselves bring the tenderness ot Christ, the thoiighttiilness ot Christ, the manly firme ness of Christ. He has no other hands but our hands --oiir teet, our voice, ozir heart with which to save the world anew. We are the Mystical Body ot Christ . . . An incredible, alarming shining trust is ours-to be the hands, the eyes, the lips, the mind, the heart ol lesiis in a world that aches tor Him. Hartley, pastor cf Holy Name Church, Steubenville. and later Bishop of Columbus, opened a high school in :is parish, he was fulfilling a need which was felt then, for educating perhaps an hundred students. Little did he realize that in scarcely more than fifty years the enroll ment would have grown to 785 students and that the school would be removed to the ideal site which it now occupies. lt took more than sixty years ior that reality to shape itself. Both Monsignor Weigand and Monsignor Gilbert in untiring effort guided this Catholic high school, the only one in the vicinity, through the ensu- ing years, enlarging its structure and ex- tending its benefits to outlying parishes. More sisters were added to the faculty and, in time, diocesan priests, also. lt remained Holy Name High School until l945 when the newly appointed Bishop, lohn King Muzzio, designated it a central high school. lt was his dream that a new high school, representative of a true Catholic spirit should be established in a spot distinct from any parish. The high school was to be open to students of outlying areas as well as to residents of Steubenville, on a tuition- free lcasis, upkeep to depend upon assess- ments trozn the various parishes proportions ate to the number of students from each. Accordingly, in l946, positive plan.: were made and through the following two years, until actual construction began, many :tours were spent with the architects. ln the spring of l949 ground was broken and actual building began, ln September, l95O, although some equipment had still to be installed, the doors of the new million dollar high school were opened to some 780 students. Cardinal Mooney came from Detroit on September lO, to dedicate the building . . . and FI arearn was realized. ln l98l the entire student body num- oered 134. Tie school has grown until in i958 :here were 171 in the graduating class alone. lt is the first structure which this genera- tion gias been called upon to build. lt will stand . . . a f1t:1ng memorial . . . for many generations to come. ZZILJJ we Lring fLe maui? nrmnen of CLriJf.H lozlaf Catholic Central football season was, as Coach Rubino put it a 10079 success and a 1002, failure -the first four games were won, making a 10095 winning percentage, and the last four games were lost making a 100521 losing percentage. Actually, the Crusaders started off like a ball of fire. With consummate skill they polished off Akron St. Mary's, 20-12, and then proceeded to annihilate Pittsburgh St. Wendelin, 52-0, and Tiffin Calvert, 33-13. Playing perhaps their best game of the last few years, they squeezed past powerful lronton, 27-24, in a spine-tingling contest marked by Wide open, aggressive action. The Crusaders next ran into a football machine working rnagniciently. This was l'lamilton's Big Blue, a member of Ohio's elite sport aggregation. Hamilton subdued us by a score of 46-0 in a game of precision-like playing by Hamilton. Central from this point on was on the down grade, losing con- Mr. Iohn Niemic, Assistant Coach n,...3g -1 L I su i f ., mad' I ' .1 :sq f .. . ' 2' 'afijg' : ,.,. Mr. Anthony Rubmo, Head Couch secutively to Linsly, Canton Central, and to their traditional rival, Steubenville Big Red. There was some cause for rejoicing, how- ever, in the discovery of stellar players. ln the backfield a one man riot squad was developed in the person of Bob Spellacy. Moe Mulholland was an outstanding run- ner in his first year of varsity football running at various times over 50 yards in single touchdown jaunts. Other promising backs were lohn De- Mayo, Bill Allen, George Sogun, and Rich- ard Santilli. On the line, Bob Salancy was a tower of strength, and along with big Tom Gulan, Bon Pawlowski, leep Cafero, and Patsy DeLuca will form a core for next years line. The l95U-5l edition of Central's Basketers ended their season with a record ot nine wins and eleven losses. This is the best record which has been compiled in recent years by our cagers and one which lohn Stozich may be proud ot in his Freshman year at Central. Although the record is only mediocre as basket ball seasons go, a quick look at the scorebook shows that we lost tive games by margins ot four points or less and gained the title hard luck team ot the valley. The Crusaders big scoring nights came against Dennison, St. Mary and Canton Central when the Blue and Gold tallied 77 and 79 points respectively. Dick Kuhn won scoring nonors in the St. Marys game by chalking up l3 points while big lack Denne ripped the nets tor 16 markers to lead his mates over Canton. lndividual scoring was divided rather evenly throughout the season as is shown by the tact that six of the varsity men scored over 125 points. The most points scored by an individual was l8. Ziggy Hadacol Mieczkowski and Bob Hooks Donnelly both held this honor. Zigg's big night came against Springfield Township while Bob found the l8-point range against Canton South. The future tor next years team looks bright due to the tact that seven members of this year's varsity will be back in the told next season and, after a year's experience with each other, Stozich and Com- pany should produce bigger and better things. he ,hey playing fombam Central Central t ent a1 1 W 1 Certra Centra Centra' entra1 Central Central C Glllffll C entral C entral Central Central Central Central Central Central CENTRAL VARSITY SCHEDULE Denn1san St Mary W eelmg e11ra 1 er 11 D R 1 1a1r a e a1r 0 1 1lC 1 L1 Tar nt I1 IS 5' Mc 1ef 1r15 It ra l num 4, an l1 s Spr nafmld Canton South L1r1sly Cantor entral B14 Rfd Ill r Jl J U 7 TOURNAMENT Central 4U v l Garnee W n Ziggy could almost drop lt m' Co captains Bob Donnelly and luck Denne pose wxth Coach Iohn Stozxch l ' 5 . 54 ,, ' .
