ll Reverend Francis F. Brown, MA., J.C.B., Principal U. . .NOW IS THE ACCEPTABLE TIME... The teacher's burden would be lightened considerably if the student were to understand and appreciate the importance of now, St. Paul knew it, and tried to convey to us that now is the acceptable time: behold. now is the day of salva- tion. ln the process of the child's education. he invariably looks to tomorrow, and overlooks the crucial Know. Too often the child uses his now to sate his appetite, not to practice mortifi- cationg to enter hazardous occasions of sin, and not to flee from them: and, in general, to consider the present as the hour to enjoy himself to the utmost. with the intention of doing penance tomorrow. If America today has grown soft. and the America of tomorrow promises to be flabby. it is because the child-not the adult-has not been taught to see that now is the acceptable time. The child that does not know the meaning of self- restraint will be the adult whose passions run roughshod over him. If the present generation of children become unproductive parasites. it is because the parents and teachers of today are omitting self-denial from their curriculum. A child's education is woefully incomplete if he is not taught the importance of penance. It is the wealth of his life, the joy of his death, and the key to his salvation. l bid each student, regardless of class. to take advantage of this, the accep- table time. and utilize this all-important now toward shaping his eternity. ll Jim
