Nu The coat-of-arms of the Most Rev. john King Mussio, Bishop of Steubenville symbolizes the Church s high power and greatness. This shield contains representa- tions of the Bishops origin, his name saints, the Diocese and city of Steubenville, and Holy Name Cathedral. The shield is divided into two sections: the left half ton the reader s rightj pertaining to the Diocese and the right half to the Bishops personal arms. The Diocesan section, represented by a field of blue upon which is surmounted a silver heart and a rose, is dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary patroness of the Diocese. Below this is found the arms of the Von Steuben family signified by a silver and blue field with a diagonal red stripe thus indicating the City of Steuben- vi e. The personal coat-of-arms of the Bishop consists of a silver eagle on a red field. The eagle surrounded by a halo, designates St. john, the Bishops principal patron. His secondary patron, St. Anthony of Padua, is symbolized by a silver cross of St. Anthony on a red field. Superimposed upon the eagle is a narrow section con- taining a red ploughshare on a field of gold to indicate Cincinnati the Bishop s place of origin. Behind the shield as in all episcopal coat-of-arms are placed a mitre, proces- sional cross, and crozier surmounted by a green ecclesiastical hat above which are entwined green cords, each ending in six tassels, arranged in three rows. The hat has been used for centuries as a mark of ecclesiastical heraldry. On the scroll beneath the shield is inscribed the motto of Bishop Mussio, Caritas urget nosj'- Charity impels us. Upon this motto every Central student tries to pattern his life.
