Brown, MA., J.C.B., Principal U. . .NOW IS THE ACCEPTABLE TIME... The teacher's burden would be lightened considerably if the student were to understand and appreciate the importance of now, St. Paul knew it, and tried to convey to us that now is the acceptable time: behold. now is the day of salva- tion. ln the process of the child's education. he invariably looks to tomorrow, and overlooks the crucial Know. Too often the child uses his now to sate his appetite, not to practice mortifi- cationg to enter hazardous occasions of sin, and not to flee from them: and, in general, to consider the present as the hour to enjoy himself to the utmost. with the intention of doing penance tomorrow. If America today has grown soft. and the America of tomorrow promises to be flabby. it is because the child-not the adult-has not been taught to see that now is the acceptable time. The child that does not know the meaning of self- restraint will be the adult whose passions run roughshod over him. If the present generation of children become unproductive parasites. it is because the parents and teachers of today are omitting self-denial from their curriculum. A child's education is woefully incomplete if he is not taught the importance of penance. It is the wealth of his life, the joy of his death, and the key to his salvation. l bid each student, regardless of class. to take advantage of this, the accep- table time. and utilize this all-important now toward shaping his eternity. ll Jim aaweagm Seated left to right---Father Berenclt, Blsgr. That is to put into concrete form the ideals, the hopes and the ambitions which the priests and sisters have tried to inculcate during the past four years. lt is in the hope that during the years to come when our graduates leaf through the pages of the Crusader, the ideals that were, perhaps, losing some of their pristine lustre may be renewed: that the waning desires for a truly Christian life, a thing difficult of achievement in these days, may he re-enkindled: and the ambition to follow in the steps of our Crucified Lord, may be strengthened anew. This then is the purpose of our book. May it, with the help of God, achieve its goal. And we beg our readers to recall that, despite our lack of knowledge and experience in compiling such a book, HciU1'l'ftl5 l'1'gvt Nor, , Sxxxwlelffe. Nu The coat-of-arms of the Most Rev. john King Mussio, Bishop of Steubenville symbolizes the Church s high power and greatness. This shield contains representa- tions of the Bishops origin, his name saints, the Diocese and city of Steubenville, and Holy Name Cathedral. The shield is divided into two sections: the left half ton the reader s rightj pertaining to the Diocese and the right half to the Bishops personal arms. The Diocesan section, represented by a field of blue upon which is surmounted a silver heart and a rose, is dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary patroness of the Diocese. Below this is found the arms of the Von Steuben family signified by a silver and blue field with a diagonal red stripe thus indicating the City of Steuben- vi e. The personal coat-of-arms of the Bishop consists of a silver eagle on a red field. The eagle surrounded by a halo, designates St. john, the Bishops principal patron. His secondary patron, St. Anthony of Padua, is symbolized by a silver cross of St. Anthony on a red field. Superimposed upon the eagle is a narrow section con- taining a red ploughshare on a field of gold to indicate Cincinnati the Bishop s place of origin. Behind the shield as in all episcopal coat-of-arms are placed a mitre, proces- sional cross, and crozier surmounted by a green ecclesiastical hat above which are entwined green cords, each ending in six tassels, arranged in three rows. The hat has been used for centuries as a mark of ecclesiastical heraldry. On the scroll beneath the shield is inscribed the motto of Bishop Mussio, Caritas urget nosj'- Charity impels us. Upon this motto every Central student tries to pattern his life. lalion GG.-,JIS If I should speak wzth the tongues of men and angels and have not rhantx I haze become as sound mg brass or a tfnklmg C mba! 1 Cor 3 3 0 C O U I I l C if, bil 5 KK ' . 1 , n . During his first y'ear in Steubenville. our beloved bishop. the Most Rev. john K. Mussio, established many traditions. For the students of Catholic Central. the most cherished of those customs is a party which has come to be known the Bishoplv Ball. This year it was held in the Catholic Community Center on January 2 as a fitting climax to a gala holiday sea- son. The ballroom was transformed into a veritable Winter Wonderland under the able supervision of Sister Mary Austina. while the game committee. with Sister Mary Veronica in charge, decorated the booths in the gymnasium. There were twelve booths. each one featuring one month of the year. The refreshment com- mittee, directed by Sister Gregory, did much to add to the enjoyment of the evening. To His Excellency and to all those whose hard work and cooperation made the Bishoplv Ball such a success, each Cen- tral student expresses his gratitude. We can truly say- Caritas urget eos. CATHOLIC CENTRAL 27-WHEELING CENTRAL 7 Catholic Central's up and coming Crusaders showed five straight football conquests after easing past rival Wheeling Central, 27-7. The air lanes were the main course of action during the evening with 70 passes being flipped, two of them good for Crusader touchdowns. The Ru- bino-men struck early with Dugan scoring on a pass from Giandomenico, good for 46 yards. This score was closely followed by a brilliant 60 yard punt returned by Bob Spellacy, a new-found member of the devastating Crusader punt return crew. The third score came in the second pe- riod with Dugan upitching a strike to Galownia in the end zone from five .yards out. Pizzofer- reto, the Crusader battering ram, smashed over from two yards out for the final score. Romey Donnelly's toe again proved golden that eve- ning, converting three out of four chances. Pizzoferrato scored the only Central touchdown on a plunge from the one foot line. Donnelly added the extra point. Canton Central 6-7-0-7-20gCentral 0-7-0-0-7 . . ,. .- . .. lil '. Play through the first quarter and all but three minutes of the second had the entire throng of 11,000 spectators agape with wonder as to the outcome of the contest, as both teams played toe-to-toe up and down the field. Then with Big Red in possession with about three minutes remaining in the first half, Lelli threw a long pass which was snatched at the last in- stant by Marv Washington for the first touch- down. Encouraged by Central's bad break, Big Red came out .a new team in the second half and with the help of more breaks, registered four more touchdowns and marched off the field City Champs. Although the score doesn't show it, Central gridmen gave Big Red a bruising battle which featured brilliant line play and out-- standing work done by our injury-riddled back- field.
