ffils and KIII45' Early in April some ninety eandidates turned out to show Coach Bill Curley just what they had in the line of baseball ability. It took almost three weeks to narrow down the squad and to piek the nineteen men who were to represent the Purple and White. The boys practiced hard, absorbing every- thing Coach Bill could teach them, hence, the squad with a l0-2 reeord turned out to win their first City Championship. Catholix- lligh ran up nine straight wins befole it staggered and went down before Troy lligln 9-2. However, it was too late for any of the other title contenders to overt-oine the cham- pionship bound '47 squad. The nine Carley men, who had the distinc- tion of starting, were filed down to perfe.-- tion and lacked notlling in any of the lllI't'l' departments, running, fielding and hitting. ball . Don Winterbourne slides safely back into first after being nearly nabbed 05 the bag. not a power hitter, always came through with a little bingo when it was needed. His field- ing ability is not to be challenged as he made impossible stops look simple. Over at the keystone sack was Frank 'LTurk Mul- queen, who after two years of first string action, felt right at home at his second-base position. Turk's fielding and natural hit- ting ability won him All-Star honors. Jim Slats', Roberts held down the short- stop post. His brilliant fielding and bullet peg made him a Hmust have on Coach Car- ley's aggregation. ,lim was all right with the stick too as he was in third place for batting honors. In the hot corner was batting champ Don Winterliotlrne. Accentuating his hit- ting, Don's rifle-like arm and fielding genius made him another asset to the squad. Out in the daisies, Coach C-arley placed his three ablest fly chasers. Skeeter NVright's long driving ability at the plate put him fourth for batting honorsg ,lack Hogan's all- round baseball know how made him an unanimous choice for eenterfield. In right field was sharp-hitting, smooth-fielding Bill De-Lair. Forming the receiving end ofthe battery for Central was 'LW'oody Witliecrk, a more than able receiver for the four hurlers chosen by Coach Bill Carley. He won the respect of all baserunners who tried to steal to second on him. The pitching staff was studded with Paul Bourgeois who won four and lost none, Bud McClure who won four and lost two, Wlally Brewer who won one and lost none and relief hurler ,lim Beans Murray who pitched scoreless relief ball.
