GENERAL MAC RTHUR I' CLASS!-.3 RELIGION . . Although we earn only one Regents credit toward our diploma from our re- ligion course, it is actually the one from which we obtain the most good. Between Fr. Flynn's logic and Fr. Janis' persuasive- ness we leave Apologetics without a doubt in our minds. We now have the satisfaction of doing wlmf is right and knowing 'why it is right. In future years, whenever one of us stops to think which is correct- who or whom , visions of Sister Mary Gregory beseeching us to have Peace, my children will come before us. Perhaps we will see Sister Mary Dorothea looking won- deringly at an empty seat, asking Is he a transient? At any rate, memories of Eng- lish IV will always bring pangs of nostalgia with them. In keeping with the New York State Syllabus, Catholic High offers its students four years of social studies. Starting in our freshman year with Social Studies 9, We come to a more clear understanding of our community and the duties and laws we must fulfill in order to live harmoniously. As sophomores we are acquainted with World History. It seems essential that we should have a knowledge of the whole past of mankind, for, the world in which we live can only be explained by the past. Extending our knowledge of history into our junior year, we encounter the study of American History. In this course em- phasis is placed on the concept of our cul- tural background. Completing the sched- ule in our senior year, we are confronted with the problems of current events in Social Studies 12. Thus, we are taught to analyze and evaluate our present-day social, economic, and political difficulties. By this curriculum of Social Studies we are informed of the truths which inspired the founders of our nation and all the nations of the world. We discover that good citizenship must be lizrd as well as learfzezl. Smilinu af flu' lldIItlc'ffll S 0 Ar'm'aS,' 15 6 Che: les Frmzczzis. Y LANGUAGES . . We, the students of Catholic High are fortunate in having at our disposal a diver- sihed language department. Not only the modern languages such as Spanish, German and French are offered but also, the classical languages, Latin and Greek. We realize that no greater achievement can be accomplished than that of acquiring a foreign language. Unity among men and nations exists in their common language. Courses are made interesting and entertaining by combining both language and civilization. In the clas- sical field, the benefits derived from Latin and Greek are immeasurable. Almost half our English words lean on Latin, as for Greek, it is usually in our senior year that the opportunity to grasp this subject crosses our path. Encouragement and tedious work on the part of our capable faculty members urges us forth to become multi-linguists. if T7'tIl'l'IiHg llnmzigb Latin A1m'ri4'i1.' Pal' iHlkI.!lIlXl7lil1, ami C. Volumes by the hundred have been writ- ten, but still not all the problems of science are solved. Expounding the truths of the old and new masters, the teachers of Cath- olic Central's science department, are trying to nourish the intelligence of some of our unacclaimed geniuses so that they may climb the pedestal of fame along with Edison and others. Future biographies will probably note that prominent biologists, chemists and physicists received their basic scientific edu- cation at Catholic Central High School. 5 MATHEMATICS . . . For thousands of years mathematicians have been seeking the solution for the un- known quantity x,'. To send future wiz- ards into the world to delve into the mys- teries of numbers, is a burden of Catholic High's Math Department. Future engineers, draftsmen, statisticians, accountants and business men are offered a well rounded course in mathematics, l lg which include elementary, intermediate, and advanced algebra, plane and solid geometry, and trigonometry. The answer to this question is Take up a com- mercial course. The course starts in first year with in- troduction to business, and acquaintance with che fundamentals of business pro- eedure. After removing your colored sweaters, take Letter No. 9,', Sr. Mary Thomas. In the sophomore year, shorthand I and typing are offered: from there, the business student tackles shorthand II, transcription and two periods of secretarial practice to top it off. S. we no doubt have spent many pleasant hours in the library under the supervision of Sister Rose Catherine. Whether it was look- ing up a history assignment, or doing some research work for English or just finding pleasure in its volumes of books, we en- joyed our time there. Sister's artistic touch made it a joy to go there. The library will always be remembered by us for its quies- cent and cheerful air. JOURNALISM . . . Journalism classes are usually composed of seniors, who, having completed their nec- essary requirements for graduation are looking for an extra subject but who, before long, are deeply engrossed in the art of editorial writing, composition of headlines, proofreading and newspaper makeup. The classes are usually small enough to enable them to be held informally and are often the scene of lively discussions. This class is valuable in training students for Work on The Triunc' and Tlu' cjtlffjfllifllll and has helped many to decide on a career involving some type of press work. Well, of course, they are the class officers who run the sodality. It all starts in May each year with the election campaigns. The hopeful candidates make posters, pass out tags, get managers, and have such witty slogans as Win with Watsonn and B for Baniak . Then every- one waits in suspense until Class Night when the results are given out. The good news last year turned out to be Mike Baniak, prefect, with Edna Watson as vice prefect and Hank Digeser, Cecilia Kenny, and Joan Gaynor as treasurer, secretary and corresponding secretary respectively. During the summer, the new otlicers used to go away for a week of school in Mon- treal of New York: but, last year travel re- strictions stopped them. Even without the SSCA, this year's ofhcers put over a lively sodality year, full of projects for our spir- itual and temporal needs. September of '45 saw the coming of Father Flynn as Director, when Father Hinds took over new duties as CYO dio- Page sixty-six cesan leader. Father Flynn's pep and good humor have helped the oihcers and student body rise to even higher goals in Sodality activities. Nearly everyone in his four years has worked on one of the committees. Who can forget the monthly nickel for Propaga- tion of the Faith? The Catholic Informa- tion? or a Queen's Work booklet? Some of the more outstanding Sodality activities that never can be left out are: the Thanks- giving offering Mass, cards of Our Lady of Catholic High, the Saturday night canteen, the Family Rosary, Christmas Toy Shop and the Lenten homeroom wheels. The place where the officers and their ideas really shone was the Assembly in SSA. We,ve had a variety from missionary Sisters, war heroes, and Maryknoll priests to quick quizzes and short plays. But we stood up under it all and gained greatly by it. Father Flynn, plus the Big 15, homeroom officers and complete student body, go to make up the Sodality of Our Lady in Catholic High, the most vital part of school life. ffm-my ha heave hz! fy Qfzfim SQIZIZ! ...Q Nah No, it's flois way! The next day Catholic High faced its first defeat at the hands of Troy High with the score Troy High 3, CCHS 2. Frank Messier on the mound let only a few hits pass, while Bob Rafferty's double pro- vided our lone tally. When the Burgh team came to our field, we handed them the biggest loss slip 7-3. Hilton was on the mound and our Sluggers got ten hits. On our next encounter with La Salle they slammed over a 4-1 victory with Jake Gully crossing the plate for our score. It was La Salle's first victory over us in ath- letics for the '44-'45 season. Our first encounter with the Watervliet team ended in defeat for us with a Hnal score of 8-1, although Frank Messier was on the mound and allowed a few hits. Fred Ryan knew how to cleave an opposing line and proved it when a couple of yards were necessary. One particularly successful play, was Fred's pass when the other team expected a kick. Mike Maroli who showed plenty of snap in retrieving passes played wonderful defensive ball. The football team was not the only fall squad at Catholic High this year. An im- portant thing to players is knowing that they have fans in the stands who are push- ing and pulling with them every inch of the way. Dragging out cheers from the tired throats were the nine boys who comprised the 1945 cheer leading squad, made up of members of the three upper classes. The sophs included John O'Neill, Anthony Pafundi and George McAlonieg Dick Kane, Bill Connery and Tom Purcell represented the junior classg the remaining trio, sen- iors, were Bernard Neaton, John Zito and Tom Cahill. The seniors held down the end positions and the rooters were under their direction. Like the football team they braved the elements and did their duty. A number of new cheers was devised and new twists put on the old ones. The Crusaders faced a tough schedule and their opener was with the Kaydets from Albany. With La Salle blood on their hands, they were intent on keeping a win- ning slate. The weather man had no pity and provided a muddy field on which the two teams struggled. It was a known fact that C. B. A.'s strength was in its line. Their backfield was comparatively weak, but the way their linemen ripped gaping holes in ours, they were bound to score. Rl'dll.j, Hip! Hip! T. Cahill, O'Nf'ill, B. Our lone tally came as a result of a sustained eighty yard drive by Ray Holmes. Bun Simmons, the game's only casualty, brought the ball over from the four to register the score. The game was not all C.B.A.,s for a hard-fought game was played both defensively and offensive- ly. Fred's running, Bun's,' passing and Mike's tackling added to the teams' pres- tige. The line threw discouragement into the Kaydet ranks by holding at our two for four downs. Since Lansingburgh had dropped out of our schedule Nott Terrace was the season's second opponent for us. The team and a number of fans braved the drizzling rain that fell over the Schenectady field for a night game packed with excitement. After experiencing a defeat at the hands of Troy High, the Nott Terrace eleven were out for blood and their first win. The Purple and White could not seem to get going but the Terrace eleven crashed over for touchdowns in each period scoring two in the second frame. The game ended in defeat for Catholic High with a final score of 30-0. Nott Terrace was playing mad ball that night and as a result Bun Sim- mons suffered a concussiong this injury was to lay him up until the final game with St. Mary's of Glens Falls. Another player on the casualty list was Fred Ryan who was unable to play a great deal of the game and we were slowed up. Ray did some fine run- ning and some outstanding tackles were made by both Nick Anthony and Murph,' Dayton. When Catholic High met V.I. at Bleecker Stadium, it was a Sunday on which the weather man smiled and the sun shone. Because of Bun's injury, Bob Gullie was moved up to quarterback and Joe Kearns took over end. Center Bob Rafferty, who had suffered a broken ankle before, hurt it again and Joe Kearns who already had a bad knee sustained another injury. With this shuffle in the team and second string substitutes in, the Eighth Streeters put up a valiant but useless struggle. The highlight of the game was a length of field run by V. I. With half of their season completed the Purple and White met the La Salle cadets in a fast tussle on a muddy field. Our line was considerably strengthened but they failed to stop the La Salle team and Catholic High met its fourth defeat. Again Ray Holmes exhibited speed on his end runs but the La Salle line held firm at their goal posts and the Purple and White were forced to give up the ball each time. Jack Carman and Nick Anthony stopped La Salle runners numerous times preventing them from hitting Catholic High pay dirt. Bob Rafferty was back at his center spot and the team played a good game. The thorn in our side was La Salleis quarterback, Galarneau, who was a great runner. The game ended with a Hnal score of 20-O. Of all the bad weather provided for us during the season it was Worst the day we played Troy High. It was not just a driz- zle, it was teeming, and the gridiron was a floating island. The Purple and Gold started off early in their scoring spree. When a play- er was tackled, he collected a great deal of mud and both second and third strings of both teams saw action. Both teams showed a lot of snap, despite the fact that it was hard to get started, Troy High had a top- notch team and were out for an undefeated season. Our line was weak and the experi- enced Purple and Gold found it easy to rip off large gains. Our power was in our pass- ing but the elements barred its use. The Trojan contributing most to our defeat was the flashy quarterback, Pat Case, who had a hand in our defeat with Troy High the previous season. The Hnal score was 34-0. St. Mary's travelled to Troy to meet the Purple and White and as usual it was rain- ing. Catholic High scored in the first three periods and St. Mary's drove over two in the Hnal stanza. Bun Simmons was back in the lineup and though it was a bad day for pasing, Bun managed to get off some beautiful heaves. The first two touchdowns came as a result of combined passing and running drive and beautiful ball was dis- played by the entire team. Bob Gullie crossed the goal when Bun threw a pass and later Jack Donovan repeated Bob's per- formance under the same circumstances. Our final score came when Ray Holmes after a series of runs crashed through the middle. The final score was 18-13. All in all, Catholic High did not have a successful season but the 1945 team held high the traditions for which Catholic Central is noted. When the All-City team was chosen three players from Catholic High were chosen, Bob Gullie, Nick An- thony, and Bunn Simmons. Page seventy-Seve? till!!! f1I'UlQl'KIl7l Il ill! Among the projects for the year the greatest was the making of the Stations of the Cross in oils. These stations were painted for the Audi- torium so that the students of Catholic High might have the opportunity of prac- tising this devotion daily. Among their other activities, the Art Club made posters for the Bond Drive, for the Eighth Wzlr Loan and the Halloween masks and the decorations of the Halloween Dance. At Christmas time these students busied themselves with the making of decorations for the annual Christmas Party. These con- sisted of murals, covering the east wall of the gym and depicting local winter scenes. Snow balls hung from the ceiling making a beautiful wintry sky effect. S3 With Christmas vacation at an end, and school reopening, the team picked up where they left off and swamped a weak Cathedral outfit S3-25, in the Hackett school gym. The Albany Club, occupying a cellar posi- tion in league standing was simply unable to stop offensive tactics of Danny Mc- Carthy and Bob Gullie, who each threw in 16 points to rate high scoring honors. LA SALLE 25 -C. C. H. S. 39 Continuing in the win column the squad romped to a 39-25 victory over the hope- less cadets of L. S. I. in one of the annual Diocesan-Principal league matches which creates so much rivalry. The Cadets did their best to hand us a defeat, but this squad was not to be denied and went to town. John Donovan ably assisted the cause with his IS points, while playing a top notch game besides. Ring the gold bell for this quintet which knocked L. S. I. so com- pletely out of the box. C. B. LANSINGBURGH 20-C. C. H. S. 34 With the second place position in league standings at stake the squad won a hard fought victory over the up-city lads. Play- ing a close defense game, the Burghers held the Crusaders on an even keel for three quarters, but in the final quarter Donovan, McCarthy and Simmons broke through the Page eighfy-si.r defense ay llanehe of the Burgh elub with a series of field baskets whieh resulted in the final 34 20 victory VINCENTIAN 38 C C H S Z4 Going into the last hllf of the elmpugn the return game with V I wus in upset which was more or less expeeted from the strong Albany Club V I s tall lads dom mated the night and held a 20 11 idx mt lge at half time The high scoring honors vxent to Bun Simmons who girnered eight markers. TROY HIGH 54-C. C. H. S. 47 Troy High added 'ln important victory to her list when she overcame the Purple and White for the second time on the Purple and Gold floor. In eliminating Catholic High as a league threat the Seventh Avenue lads were free to go on to championship honors. Danny McCarthy hit his highest of the season as he threw 20 points through the meshes for the Purple and Xvhite cause. ST. MARY'S AMSTERDAM 60- C. C. H. S. 40 Suffering their worst defeat ofthe season, the Crusaders went down before the St. Mary's of Amsterdam aggregation on the ill-fated up-state court. Again it was Mc- Carthy's night as the books recorded 14 points for that able player. CATHIQDRAL 33 -C. C. H. S. Sl Cathedral of Albany received one more shellacking to add a win to our record. Even with the second stringers playing, the score continued to rise until when the whistle blew, the score held Cohoes to a 65-38 defeat. LANSINGBURGH 45 --C. C. H. The Purple and White brought down the curtain in fine fashion as four members of the squad hit double numbers, with Ray Holmes closing the season with 16 points to top the winners. Thus the '45-'46 court season came to an end. The final league standing showed Cath- olic High holding second and third positions in Principal and Diocesan leagues respec- tively and the Purple and White with a host of promising yearlings coming into the fore- front can look forward to many seasons of championship honors. , Seflanny passes off to fzyzfees 1945-46 saw Catholic High produce one of its stellar Junior Varsity teams. Led by high scoring Frank Mulqueen, the Jayvees ran up an impressive record of fourteen wins and four losses in league competition. In the first half of the campaign the J. V.'s took the measure of Vincentian, Troy High, Watervliet, St. Mary's, Cathe- dral, LaSalle, C. B. A., Cohoes and Lansing- burgh in that order. As the second half began, the Purple and White met with stiffer opposition than in the first round and in their Hrst game lost to Vincentian's Lions in a hectic tussle. Following this loss, the juniors returned to their winning ways and again knocked off Troy, St. Mary's, and Cathedral. The Watervliet game saw the -Iayvees lose their second game and the fol- lowing week LaSalle eked out our forces in the traditional clash. After this came a win over Cohoes in another thrilling contest and the final game saw the 'Burgh turn back the Purple and White's Juniors up on the prairie . Supporting Turku Mulqueen in start- ing roles were Tom Boyle, Jerry Driscoll, Bill McBride, and Paul Bourgeois. Among the members of the second team who saw limited service were Jack Witbeck, Pete Mooney, Jack Flanigan, Jack Singleton, Jim McGlynn, and Frank Mace. C C H S C.
