A man of small stature, witty, and decisive in his manner, Father gave us our last retreat at Catholic High. He brought his main points into the minds of his audience through the best known method-examples. For instance, he pointed out that when a man intends to build a house he doesn't go right ahead and build. On the contrary, he engages an arch- itect to lay out or draw up the plan for the house. Then with the plans, he goes ahead I urjr Nfffjf-Nl-.l' and starts to build. Our lives are exactly like that. When God made us, He didn't just Create us and let it go at that. Hardly- instcad He gave us His blue-print of life, His plan for our happiness and everlasting glory with Him in heaven. Everything God has put here on earth has a use. Though a thing may seem very small, its use can actually draw us nearer to God. To abuse things however, only draws us farther away from Him and His plan for us. Our retreat was an immense success and Father Grewen left a niche of happy mem- ories in each of our hearts. Vile won't for- get Him and the pleasant moments we shared with him in this, our last retreat at Catholic High. Cwzferefzff' Time . Many members of our senior class have majored in science solely because they real- ized America's great need for technicians. As a result of their interest the physics, chemistry, and mathematics courses in Catholic Central may well have produced ams in March. Several successfully obtained the passing grade and will receive directions for physical examinations in the near fu- ture. We know that these young men will prove their worth as ofhcer-candidates in the Army and Navy. Even the art department was mobilized this year. When the Red Cross issued an appeal, our young Rembrandts and Da Vincis responded, forsaking the classic to indulge in decorative enterprise. Certainly all branches of our armed forces today demand men and women skilled in a scientihc line. lt is the job of the high school to instill a thorough knowledge of fundamentals in the student so that he will be prepared for more specific instruction. This duty has been fulfilled by Catholic Central. Answering the government's call for more highly trained personnel as ofhcer- material, many of our senior boys took the Army and Navy Specialized Training ex- favors and messages executed by these stu- dents were dispatched to our hghting men all over the world. To the delight and grati- fication of the craftsmen, alumni of C. C. H. S. as far away as Egypt acknowledged receipt of this work. The nrt department has been chosen as one of hftcen to be repre- sented at the Albany Historical Art Mu- seum. Members of these classes presented Sister Lucia with a charcoal drawing of St. Joan of Arc for her French class and also provided material for school publications and extra-curricular activities. Page sixty-lzinze In the history courses, students have pre- pared for civic responsibilities by open for- um discussions on current events, participa- tion in local social meetings and in the reg- ular study of American history. The history C course was made available for the juniors this year. Debates on such issues as subsi- dies, the Negro, and votes for eighteen-year- olds caused a considerable stir among the Seniors. Perhaps in some one of those stormy sessions there was presented a plan that Wfashington had not thought of! Repre- sentatives from the history classes were sent to hear Dr. Singh, native of India, speak on his homeland. Members of our class who passed the Eng- lish exam in January have undertaken the study of two individual courses in English, creative writing and English work- shop . The former is designed to make use of Whatever native Writing ability may be present in the graduating class. One of the required activities for this course is the pub- lication of some original piece of writing by each member of the class. English Work-shopn, under the direction of Sister M. Laurentia, consists in the study of gram- mar in preparation for radio script writing, which forms the second half of this ad- vanced English course. The journalism class produced the Writ- ers who have made the Fourth Estate pos- sible in the school. Cui' language, business and law courses have given us not only the f a c t u al knowledge so necessary today but have trained our minds in the individuality of the lib- erally educated, that We may correspond to the re- quirements of a civilized Most important of all, our minds have been filled with the teachings of Christ. Praying and studying in unison, We have forged the spirit of democracy. In our grad- uating class we may find Mother Church's living example of her ageless wisdom. Wfe have had the beneht of hundreds of years of learning. Not only did God see fit to give us the faith but He also gave us the teach- ings of His scholarly sons to guide us. Thus, we have not only been made educated citi- zens of democracy but we possess a gift to help us strengthen that democracy-the gift of Catholicity. Yes, it's the literature group again. This time, how- ever, they are extremely diligent making preparations for the Catholic press exhibit. How enthusiastic they are! Through the untiring efforts of Sister lflizabeth Thomas and her committee the exhibit was finally Completed. As we walked along inspecting the dis- play, the buzz became a babble -ind clatter when the entire school filed into the audi- torium to see the literature play. There on the Stage Were representations of various qw HI'l'I'HffI-filllll' .bi .. 'S bookiackets and magazine covers from some of our most popular Catholic publications. QAgain we thanli Sister Elizabeth Thomas for her direction of this play.j Our committee was most assiduous in trying to develop in us habits of good read- ing not only while we are in school but for the future, and we learned the value of reading Catholic books, magazines and newspapers. NVe are sure that the eiforts were not in vain and that each student did receive a better understanding of Catholic literature. As February came to a close, the pamphlets were distributed to the students to be read and then to be sent to our boys in service. XVe can again say it about The G0lIt101iL'!'S, which was presented with great success. Could there be a more beautiful and bewitching spot for the setting than nineteenth century Venice, the city of ro- mance, with its islands, gondolas, and gon- doliers? Because of the sudden death of the King of Barataria, it is necessary that the lost prince be found. There is an exhaustive search for the prince who is in reality the drummer boy for the mercenary Duke and Duchess of Plaza-Toro, played by Walter Carr and Jane Bromley, respectively. Through some mistake of the Grand In- quisitor of Spain fBob Bischoffj this child has been lost and it is believed that the prince is one of the two famous gondoliers of Spain. The stupidity of these gondoliers brings out the comedy of the operetta. Obriozzsly fbe mst! The hall, beautifully decorated with pur- ple and white drapes, was ample to accom- modate members of both the Junior and Senior classes. The girls attending received favors which were victory pins with the school emblem on them. No one will doubt that it was one of the best dances ever spon- sored by Catholic High. That was the day of our traditional senior ball. The girls doffed the usual sweater and skirt for yards of misty chiffon and rustling taf- feta and pinned to uherl' shoulder was-h-i-s -corsage. To add an extra touch of sophisti- cation the boys came resplendent Cif not en- tirely comfortablej in tuxedos. Toby Middle- brook and his band supplied the music throughout the evening, which was mostly of a slow, dreamy tempo though there were sev- eral fast', pieces. Towards midnight, Shirley Brewer was chosen queen and as such crowned the greatest Queen of all. Our Lady's statue reposed to the right of the bandstand and was surrounded by sweet smelling boughs of bal- sam and pine through which were artistically threaded colored lights. Under the able guid- ance of the committee headed by Guinan St. John and Betty Knowles, our class president and vice-president, we were able to chalk up the hours from 9-1 as tres heureusen. i4'l1Jt1111's, Marry I'o1c'i'rx Vfl'1QilIfz7 Ptzfnmfi, SZ2il'll H' Bl't'1l't'IA, Ifzu Bzzm'-y tzmf Mm'-y flflt'f'll Rzllllltfjh f Wee 3-if Om' Q1I4'1'II um! our tjzztwz. FOOTB LL ,Slay From the opening day of school the main topic of conversation, among the boys at least, was football. The call for candidates brought some forty aspirants to the gym. During the few following weeks there was a highly contested light for positions on the first team. Wfhen the first game rolled around, the best boys were chosen by our able coach, Bill Carley. The team was star- studded with members of last year's squad: Captain Phil Barrett, quarterbackg Jack NVright, halfbackg jack Wfatson, fullbackg Fred Duffy, halfbackg Art', Campbell, center: George Berghamer, guard: Al Zam- pier, guardq Joe Pelcher, tackleg Dan Yam- in, tackle: and Don C'Brien, endg and with some new promising prospects like Bill Byrnes, backheldq Tom Egan, endg and Al Maroli, backlield. The team was fast and peppy, but in the first game a lack of practice and experience brought a spirit-breaking defeat at the hands of C. B. A. The score was C.B.A. 26- C.C.H.S. 6. Then came two fine weeks of practice as the boys recuperated, corrected their faults and dried their wetted spirits. When they met a highly favored Lansingburg squad they outfought them only to have the breaks go against them in the last two minutes and to lose by the meager score of 3 to 0. This moral victory proved that our boys were as good as the best of them, and they showed this spirit when they swamped Vincentian by a margin which does not do the game credit, 20 to 13. Then came another hard week of drilling in the mud and rain, for on Sunday, Cath- olic High was slated to meet their arch rival, LaSalle. None of the present pupils had ever seen us defeat the Cadets on the gridiron. On Sunday, a large crowd Let's here just mention a body which is too often forgotten, the scrubs. XVithout this scrappy bunch the varsity could not get the experience which they need to go after those victories. On the scrubs were many seniors who, even with the knowledge that they would never be back to play var- sity ball, continued to play the game for enjoyment, for physical fitness and for Catholic High. C.B.A. In our first try the purple and white gridders suffered a humiliating defeat by a strong seasoned squad of C.B.A. cadets. The final score was 25 to 6. Catholic High had the kickoff and started maching down the field. From then on our part of the game was a series of good plays followed by a fumble or an interception. turned out, and they saw a great game as Catholic High dished out an afternoon of revenge to the tune of 14 to 0. Une game remained. A win would have meant a tie for City Championship, but Troy High proved too strong for the Purple and White, who bowed 14 to 7. The season is over, but not the memories. Everyone will always remember the 1943 football squad who finally defeated the La- Salle team, which has been pushing us around for some years. Brought down! LANSINGBURG Our second grid tussle proved to be our toughest loss of the year and perhaps of the schoolis history. The Burgh, after being pushed around by the Crusaders for nearly four quarters, successfully pulled a sleeper play to carry the ball to the live yard line. After being held for three downs, Golds- bury kicked a fleld goal to give the Burgh a three point lead. In the few seconds that remained we did not have time to score. Again in this game we find that fumbles lost the game. This 3 to O defeat will be talked about for a long time. Page izinefy-sllv after the kick, Fred Duffy caught Phil Bar- rett's running pass to run fifty yards to the promised land. Phil kicked the extra point to put us in the lead. The Lions managed to score once more on a freak punt, but two powerful thrusts by the Crusaders into Vincentian land made the final score 20 to 13. LA SALLE The C.C.H.S. gridders downed a power- less LaSalle Eleven, 14 to 0. The Purple Crusaders opened the scoring in the first quarter when they drove through the Cadet defenses, with Fred Duffy carrying the ball over the goal line. Phil Barrett converted and C.C.H.S. led 7-0. In the third period, Bill Byrnes passed to Fred Duffy for a touchdown. Again Barrett made it 14-O with an ac- curate placement. TROY HIGH Troy High defeated the Purple and White by a 14-7 score. The Purple and Gold scored twice in the first half by means of long sustained drives. The third quarter was a defensive contest with neither team gaining appreciable yardage. In the fourth period the Catholic High attack started to roll. A blocked punt gave the ball to C.C.H.S. on Troy I-Iigh's 8 yard line. Capt. Phil Barrett plunged through the line for 8 yards and a touchdown. Barrett converted for the extra point. As the final whistle blew, the Troy High eleven was being hard pressed near its own goal line. As the football season was near- ing its end, the call went out for basketball candidates. Some of the holdovers from last year's quintet were Jack Kelly, captain and A11- City candidate, Bob Degnan, rangy junior guard, Tom Ryan, forward, and Tom Egan, center. In the following weeks of practice, the team was sifted out and polished. The finished product was a high powered five with Jack Kelly and Tom Ryan at the forward berths, Tom Egan in the center slot and Bob Degnan and Phil Barrett at the guard positions. On the sec- ond team we had Art Campbell, Dan Yam- in, Bob Woods and Fitzgerald. Finishing the season with a record of 15 wins and 3 losses, C.C.H.S. was invited to the Little Falls Tournament, where they won the Consolation Trophy . . . In the first game, C.C.H.S. turned back De Sales, 43 to 25, Jack Kelly collecting 11 points and a trio of Catholic High men eight. The un- forgettable scene which tools place that day in front of C.C.H.S. caused more than one to stop and observe it in Wonder .ind in interest. The daily occurrence of SSA., which ordin.1rily is reserved forsod.1lity,study and auditorium, was postponed until dismissal. Forgetting the usual informulity of depart- ure, the students, accompanied by the fac- ulty, marched in .1 group to the ceremony, scheduled to take place at two-thirty. The entire student body, under the di- rection of Miss Miller, joined in the singing of the hymn On This Day, O Beautiful Mother. Immediately after this the newly elected othcers for the 1943-'44 term Could be seen descending the north-side steps of the school building. The oihcers, led by Louis Rosamilia, prefect, and joseph Es- posito, treasurer, proceeded toward the statue of Our Blessed Mother. Following the two boys were Betty Knowles, vice pre- fect, assisted by Mary McGrath, secretary, who carried the Crown decorated with lilies of the valley and pink roses. The Sopho- more and Junior class oifcers came next in the procession. O Mary, zu' L'l'UlL'lI flier- ' mi ,, 41: roger, -. f M tv 1 Q ' 'Q v T KTTTQ' if A 54?
