As we leave Catholic High it is only fitting and proper that we express our ap- preciation to those who have made our four years here possible. To no one do we owe a greater debt of gratitude than to Bishop Fletcher under whose leadership C. H.S. has made great strides in the field of education. He has watched over us with paternal solicitude, has sent holy and learned priests to guide and teach us. Because of his active interest, his keen and effective realization of our youthful spiritual and intellectual needs we are better men today. Therefore, it is with genuine devotion and an eager pledge of continued fidelity that we dedicated to him our... 4 f I4 4 ALBERT L. HEALY A quarter century has rolled by since that quiet September day in 1930 when the reins of Catholic secondary school education in Greater Little Rock passed from the hands of Morris Prep into the hands of the newly founded LITTLE ROCK CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL FOR BOYS. Like its predecessor, the new school was officially the high school department of Little Rock College, the now-dormant institution from which have come some of Arkansas' most valued citizens. Catholic High's first principal, Fr. John J. Healy . . . priest, scholar and gentleman . . . stood at the school's door and welcomed fifty-three students, the first of six hundred twenty-one young men who were, in the course of twenty-five years, to be numbered among its graduates. With him were those other pioneers: Fathers Edward J. Yeager, Thomas F. Smith, and John J. Duffy. The four had been appointed by Bishop John B. Morris, the school's founder, and charged with the task of setting the course for the future. FR. JOSEPH M. BURNS 1931-1932 FR. FRANCIS A. ALLEN FR- l-E0 M. He directed the football program for the first few years while Mr. Tommy Donahue coached basketball. Other early coaches were Mr. W. D. Mathers, Mr. Joseph Scott and Mr. Collie Williamson. It didn't take long for a good thing to catch on, by the start of the second year the student popu- lation almost doubled itself. Two new priests were added to the faculty, Fr. Joseph Burns, formerly of Morris Prep and Fr. F. A. Allen, recently ordained in Rome. Under Fr. HeaIy's direction the school's first newspaper, The Squawk, came into being, the Annual Spring Carnival made its bow, a P.T.A. was organized, the Sodality was set up. Getting Acquainted With Madge, the schooI's first play, was presented in the Fall of '33. In the following Spring Fr. Healy originated the Annual Father-Son Communion Breakfast, an activity close to his heart. Increases in enrollment continued through the early '3O's. Old faculty members departed for sem- FR. KENNEDY FR JOHN W. KORDSMEIER FR. SIMON STOCK O.C.D. . . .AND A FACULTY OF 10 IN 1955 By 1935 the school had one hundred thirty-three students and the need for a full time athletic director became evident. The job went to Mr. Tom Murphy who, in two years, despite a small football squad, won eighteen out of twenty-three Games. Growth continued and with over one hundred forty students expected for September 1936 enrollment Father Healy knew that the Gaines St. building would be inadequate. With an extensive remodeling job, the larger State St. building seemed the answer to growing pains. The summer was feverishly spent in changing the dormitories and private rooms of what had once been Fitz- gerald Hall of Little Rock College into a high school. When the iob was completed the building had seven classrooms, a large study hall, as well as a library and cafeteria. The old building was devoted exclusively to the science department. Hundreds attended the formal opening of the new plant on October 28th. Sports-wise too, '36 was a big year. An athletic association was formed as well as the Rocket Booster Club. The following season Mr. Cliff Shaw was signed on as assistant coach. With Mr. Murphy's departure in 1939, Mr. Choice Rucker took over the athletic department. This year also saw Frs. Claiborne Lafferty and John J. Mulligan added to the faculty. In the meantime Fr. Healy, having given the school a good start, was appointed Diocesan Director of Schools and Hospitals and Fr. James E. O'Connell succeeded him as principal. Father Healy's program was carried on by Fr. O'Connell and these other faculty members appointed during the late thirties and the early forties: Fathers James W. Nugent, John E. Murphy, Patrick M. Lynch, Edward R. Maloy, Rudolph E. Maus, John F. Kilpatrick, John M. Bann, Adam A. Micek Cfirst alumnus to be ordainedj, Arthur L. Pietrowiak and N. Charles McGinnis. A Fathers Club was organized in 1938 and a Dramatic Society in '39 produced plays under the auspices of the club. The plays were directed by Fr. M. F. Donovan, another new faculty member. Here we learn to live our faith by taking advantage of the many spiritual opportunities given us: daily Mass, frequent confession, First Friday Com- munion, Forty Hours Devotions, the annual Retreat . . . l LIVING OUR FAITH -of Q I will go unto the altar of God, unto God Who giveth joy to my youth. 36 PSALM 42 I am the living bread that has come down from heaven. LEARNING OUR FAITH munion and sets the spiritual tone of our lives for the days that follow The better a man knows his faith, the better he can live it. Our religion classes are the most important of the day. Through them, during our four years, we learn the reasons for the faith that's in us. F Fr. O'Dwyer discusses the Commandments with his Sophomore religion class. As Fresh- men these boys studied the Sacraments. Though for a time we may become enraptured with football, basketball or proms, the priests never let us forget the main purpose of school: to learn, to acquire those spiritual, moral, intellectual and social virtues which are the marks of the genuine Catholic gen- tleman. LCM TAKE OUR PLACES IN THE WORLD Dear Graduates: To you has fallen the honor of being members of the twenty- fifth graduating class of Catholic High School. We know that this distinction will always be a hap- py memory in your lives. On occasions such as this we canot but turn our thoughts to other years and other graduating classes. Events of past days and hallowed traditions link you to other classes with a bond of fra- ternal comradeship that halts the progress of the years. United with other graduates of Catholic High you stand together as a liv- ing monument carved from the traditions of Catholic Education into the minds and characters of those who have experienced the REV, E. guiding influence of her solici- tous care. As you stand at this crossroad of life your panoramic vision of the past arouses sentiments of righteous pride and keen appreciation. You glory in the accomp- lishments of your elder brothers. Your heart is warmed by their patriotism . . . especially of those who have paid the supreme sacrifice of their lives. Their loyalty to God, to Country, to Alma Mater offers a goal supremely to be desired. The contributions of a quarter-century by a loyal and devoted faculty is a pledge of appreciation of the responsive interest of the students. As we bid you farewell, we are proud of the heritage that is yours, we urge its emulation. We are proud of the loyalty that has been yours, we ask its con- tinuation. God grant you happiness on your journey through life . . . and may our meet- ings be frequent. Yours sincerely in Christ, REV. WILLIAM E. GALVIN ' Principal I 0 REV. O'Connell, seeking a successor to Coach Rucker, secured the serv- ices of Mr. Pete Merloni as Athletic Director. With the advent of World War ll Fr. O'Connell instituted courses in Aeronautics and allied fields of study to prepare C.H.S. students for advanced military training when they would be called to the colors. The war menace grew greater and Coach Merloni went into the service leaving the Athletic Department without a head. The gap was filled with the appoint- ment of Fr. Rudolph Maus as Athletic Director and Fr. N. C. McGinnis as coach. Together they produced many winning teams. Fr. Maus continued as director until 1945 when he was appointed a pastor and Fr. McGinnis assumed complete charge of the athletic program until December 1951 when he, too, was appointed a pastor. On January 1, 1952, Coach Michael Malham was named Director of Athletics and Fr. Leo Riedmueller was appointed faculty moderator. ln the intervening years, changes had taken place in the scholastic program as well as the athletic. Following the 1944 appointment of Msgr. O'Connell to the rectorship of St. John's Seminary, Msgr. M. Francis Donovan was appointed prin- cipal of Catholic High. He kept the school abreast of all the vast improvements made in the field of education during the latter years of the war while at the same time still staunchly maintaining the principles upon which the school was founded. Assisting him were many fine teachers who contributed much to Cath- olic High: Fathers Jesse C. Cheney, Joseph S. Quinn, Martin E. Busby, Lawrence P. Graves, Joseph M. Walshe, John W. Kordsmeier and Simon Stock, O.C.D. Fr. William E. Galvin, who had been teaching at Catholic High since 1946, was named principal in September 1952 when Msgr. Donovan was appointed pastor of Blessed Sacrament Church in Jonesboro. As principal he has followed faithfully the course set by Fr. Healy and carried on the fine work of his pre- decessors, bringing the school to new heights of accomplishment. Numerous vol- umes have been added tothe library, a Vocational Testing and Guidance Program has been established, professors have been sent off for summer work in leading universities and an Alumni Survey has been conducted . . . all this in addition to an extensive remodeling of the school's physical plant. Due to the work of Fr. Galvin and his faculty Catholic High continues to enioy wide recognition for its services to the Catholic youth of Greater Little Rock. That faculty includes the following Qyear of appointment in parenthesesy Fr. Raymond L. O'Dwyer C1947j, Fr. John F. Doyle Q1948j, Fr. Lee A. Riedmueller 09483, Fr. George W. Tribou C195OD, Fr.
