' From the very beginning of story and song poets and Iyricists have likened life to a iourney along a thorough- fare. One modern poet has even distinguished this thoroughfare into two separate sections . . . the first part, says he, is like a pleasant small town road that leads to a large highway . . . the second part, he con- tinues, is the highway itself. The former represents our high school years lfor it is from first year high school that we are accustomed to date our lives as really beginningl while the latter represents the years after high school. The turning-off point is graduation. As these words are written we, the members of the Class of '54, are nearing that turning point and will soon be on the highway itself. Those who have gone before us tell us that as the miles of the years click away on time's speedometer, a main likes to oc- casionally pull over to the side of the road, relax . . . and recall some of the scenes that he has forever passed on the road of his high school days. This book will be for us the springboard enabling us to do iust that . . . to relive these wonderful days of our high school years. lt will remind us of valuable friendships, of the fine priests who loved us enough to patiently teach us day after day despite our short- comings and ingratitude, of classes, lessons, dates, football games, of the mischief we got into, of the laughs and punishments we shared . . and so on into happy endlessness. Because our lives will be lived separately from this time on THE ROCKET '54 will become a cherished pos- session . . . because it alone will be able to recall for us our days as students at Catholic High School. No one, priest or student, can recall a C.H.S. event in the past four years in which this all-stater hasn't played an active part. His willingness to help-cheerfully as well as per- severingly-will long be remembered. ' Wim! ' Qfdgi 5 adam! TOM DONAHUE This lad's special brand of red headed determination has been evident in almost every action of his high school lite. Devout in his religion persevering in his studies and vitally interested in his school Tom well deserves the honor which is his in being named the Ideal Catholic High Student 1-ifzdlezcz LOUIE HERN Give Luigi a football or basketball and then watch those feet move like greased lightning. He gave both fans and fellow students alike dozens of gridiron thrills last season-and his agility on the basketball court confused many a luckless opponent. If his improve- ment these past four years, in every way, is any indi- cation, then Louie will make a top-flight C.H.S. alumnus. JOHNNY PRINCE Alexander Pope's definition: True wit is nature to ad- vantage dressed, what oft was thought but ne'er so well expressed, seems to have been tailor made for Johnny. His sharp wit enlivened many a class or bull session -even the most poker faced prof had difficulty suppressing a grin when this lad let loose. His wit had its serious side too as is well evidenced in the works of his pen while editor of The Cicerone. He made the school paper one of the finest in the state.
