Uppermost in the minds of all who have helped direct this institution, and those who have attended it, is the individuals relationship with his God. To this end, theology classes are supplemented with a weekly student Mass as well as periodic opportunities for students to receive the sacrament of Penance. ing Q grill! The six candidates were the Misses: Lydia Bartos and Becky Westover of Mercyhurst, Trudy Peterson and Barbara Spadacene of Villa Maria, and Mary Beth Lachesky and Pamela Manino of St. Benedict. Balloting for the queen followed next day. That evening, the Homecoming Dance was held in the school gymnasium. Closing festivities were staged at half-time of the game on Saturday. Father john Dollinger, headmaster, and Mr. james MacKrell, president of the Moms and Dads' Association, announced Miss Barbara Spadacene as T973 Homecoming Queen. Miss Spadacene was escorted by senior lay Schonthaler. The evening's enjoyment was further highlighted with a 46-T8 Rambler defeat of the East High Warriors Q.- 5-.. 1 N Q nl . Simon 1956-1973 The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. I solemnly assure you, unless the grain of wheat falls to the earth and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat. But if it dies, it produces much fruit. The man who loves his life loses it, while the man who hates his life in the world preserves it to life eternal. lf anyone would serve me, let him follow meg where I am, there will my servant be. If anyone serves me, him the Father will honor. lohn 12:23-26 God ordains that some men will live their whole lives in seventeen years. Mark Simon came to Prep in 1970 with this year's graduating class enthused about life, learning, and growth. He never lost that enthusiasm, and in the course of it, he was lifted by God. His record here would have recommended him highly in this world. God, however, chose to share him with us only to the beginning of his senior year, and then He called him to Himself. But some of Mark's spirit lives on here. He is a part of the goodness that resides in Cathedral Prep. Alfred M. Watson Bishop Watson's interest in Cathedral Prep is all embracing. He is very concerned with the development of youth in our diocese. He takes a special pride in Cathedral Prep and makes frequent visits to the school to urge the Prep students to maintain high standards of Christian education. In his visits to the parishes of the diocese, he con- sistently encourages his people to continue their interest in and aid to our Catholic schools. Bishop Watson presents honor cards in one of his frequent visits to Prep F? William E. Biebel r ln the person of Father Swoger, one frequently thinks that lulius Caesar, vvho was reputed to have been able to do three things at once, has been reincarnated so numerous are Father's responsibilities. As Dean of Students, he has the unenviable position of supervisor of discipline, director of attendance, advisor of the senior class, and coordinator of all student ac- tivities. Father also directs the annual LITERULAE Patron Drive. In spite of these enormous duties, he performs everything well, incurs no ill will, is everyone's friend, and shows a masterful ability in planning and organization. Assistant Head masters Father Biebel, an able man of integrity and dignity, serves as chief yoeman at Cathedral Prep. His first duty is that of Dean of Studies, an arduous task which requires the coordinating and maintaining of all the courses of study offered the students. Other time consuming duties of Father Biebel in- clude moderator of the National Honor Society, coor- dinator of the Student Government, and director of the chorus. In addition, Father teaches courses in German and Arts and Humanities. Indeed, he is a most capable and distinguished priest and administrator. .Q s ' - it xt xxx-QM Rev. john W. Swoger Wu... W- V- Student Government Activities Committee The Activities Committee, chaired by Russ Warner, has many achievements to their record this year. In addition to the expected job of setting up rallies, approving mixers and organizing bus trips, these twelve Committee- men have accomplished the unenviable task of keeping the Activities Calendar both up- to-date and filled. Academic N-kt! 14'-1-mf fr ' Lf-T ff 1: '55 Committee This Committee, ably managed by Rick Scarpitti, initiated numerous innovations in the academic side of our education. These changes included recommendations made to department heads, the placing of sugges- tion boxes around the school and, most im- portantly, the establishment of a tutoring system. 5' Problems And Solutions Committee The twelve members of this committee, headed by Ron DiNicola, have one of the most difficult jobs available in the Student Govern- ment. Their job requires a great deal of diplomatic ability in order that their responsibilities be discharged efficiently. ln their capacity of mediators and sifters of information, these analysts of grievances and misunderstandings have accomplished their job remarkably well. In addition to being the first committee to draw up a governing charter stating their purposes and functions, this committee also pioneered the suggestion box idea which increases the efficiency of the commit- tee in its work. SX l 31- ? 'il' ah, Student Discipline Committee The Student Discipline Committee, headed by Gerry Villela, represents the student body's opportunity to govern itself within the criteria of the school rules. Naturally, major offenses must still be referred to school authorities, but, for the first time, students have been granted the right to be judged by their peers for minor offenses. lll ,. .,, ,ty -5-by L,-W:-hs...-.ig .-, - - -.Y , ,ZW A ff grim 10 n On behalf of the Prep students and the Athletic Board, Father Dollinger accepts the Section I foot- ball trophy from Mr. Dominic DeNar- do. In each session, various bills are introduced and the merits of each are debated until a majority decision is reached to either pass or defeat the resolution. I I Debate Debate is an area of forensics which compels the student to develop himself in the areas of logic and persuasive speaking. The debator must learn the best way to cross-examine his oppo- nent, evidence his point and construct a case which is most advantageous to his speaking abilities. 116 -:lf v--41C-,,f- -1. H i:'?a.-:1'1'E':. -w- - - ,.----- W2 Extemporaneous Speaking Extemporaneous speaking or Extemp as it s often called is an exercise in the individual s ability to construct a speech several minutes in length without having any prior knowledge of his topic Humor And Drama Participants in this category choose literary works of a dramatic nature and commit them to memory. Then, the student gives the dialogue, monologue or whatever the case calls for, sub- stituting his own voice inflections and body EngIish in an attempt to gain the most dramatic effect. 117 ., ,. J-A-qw. -1. .,--. .. F... , una-- J- . -. Original Oratory This facet of forensics en- tails the choosing of a topic and preparing a speech to deliver. No research is permitted. Hence, the name Original Oratory since it is the student's composition in entirety. Prepared Oratory Participants in Prepared Oratory must choose a speech given by someone else and commit it to memory. They are awarded speaker points on the basis of how well they present the speech. Speech Club The Speech Club, under the ad- visement of Father james O'Hara, endeavors to give its members a better understanding of the techni- ques and fine points of public speak- ing. This club performs a very impor- tant function as everyone wants to express his opinions and the ability to express them well is an ac- complishment, indeed. Model U. N. The Model U. N., advised by Mr. Thomas Kalista, gives its participants a taste of international government as it is seen through United Nations policy. Each school represents a nation and assumes that nation's foreign policy on modern, controver- sial questions such as terrorism, disarmament and political refugees. In short, members of the Model U. N. attain an awareness of world affairs and an un- derstanding of pressing global problems that few high school students are fortunate enough to receive. lt's not all work and no play though, as any member would testify. This year's Model U. N. attended the Twenty-first Annual Gannon Model U.
