A familiar scene as the Bishop gathers with his Prep boys to talk about his big dream . was growing older. In 1948 he realized that he had need of an Auxiliary Bishop to aid him in his work. Auxiliary Bishop Edward P. McManaman, who had for some years been rector of the Cathedral, was consecrated and was at the same time appointed pastor of St. Joseph Parish in Oil City, where he made his residence. Bishop McManaman assisted as an in- valuable force until his untimely death in 1964ea death mourned by the entire area. In the following year, Auxiliary Bishop AUred M. Watson was consecrated as Bishop Gannon's new assistant. In 1966, after a long and successful era of shepherding the flock of the Erie diocese, Archbishop Gannon resigned his bishopric. To replace hint Bishop John Francis Whealon was consecrated in December of 1966 by Cardinal John Kroll of Philadelphia. The Archbishop retained his interest in the Prep students nonetheless. Long unable to attend athletic contests because he became too excited, he still followed the teams' progress, still kept himseU posted on academic achievement and advancement. The Arehbislzops death on September 6, 1968, at the venerable age of 91, was a true loss to Cathe- dral Prep, Together with an entire city the stu- dents of Prep mourned hint on a Day of Sorrow . Proudly they watched as the busy traffic of a busy city haltea' for thirty seconds to pay tribute to a great man. Bishop Whealon voiced their feelings when he said. We are indeed fortunate to have had with us the charism, the unique dynamism that was Archbishop John Mark Gannon. The Arch- bishop was buried in the crypt beneath St. Peter's Cathedraleea crypt that opens off' the cafeteria hall and that daily witnesses Prep students, and faculty who pass by, stop to pray, or rentinisce over Prep 's exal ted founder. Bishop Watson, Ordinary Bishop Whealon was transferred to the Hartford archdiocese in 1969. In his place Bishop Watson, graduate of Prep's first graduating class, was in- stalled as Ordinary of the diocese of Erie in 1969. Prep continued to see changes. In 1950 a statue of Our Lady of Prep had been erected on the east campus to the memory of all alumni who had given their lives in World War 11. In 1959 blazers had become a part of the Prep scene.
