For that education these men are deeply indebted to the late Archbishop John Mark Gannong for, it was through his foresight and energy that Prep was founded in 1921. From these ear- liest Prep days until his death in 1968, the Archbishop was a guiding force behind our school. We who grad- uate in this the fiftieth anniversary year here express, on behalf of all Prep graduates, our sincere gratitude to our founder. 1 I , Y s v.i,lQl,i.4 I , v f '--na-nan The Most Reverend Alfred M. Watson, D.D. Bishop of Erie Bishop Watson is truly an integral part of Cathedral Prep. He was a member of the first graduating class - the class of 1925. In the 1940's he served as teacher, advisor, and assist- ant headmaster. At present, as Bishop of Erie, Bishop Watson still recognizes the value of a Prep education and maintains close contact with all aspects of the school. ,gyms-it Archbishop John Francis Whealon Early in 1967, Bishop John Francis Whealon brought to Erie the diverse talents of a well-educated Christian leader. During his two-year tenure as Bishop of Erie, he served as an excel- lent example to all, but especially to the students of Prep. Bishop Edward P. McManaman During his fifteen years of service as auxiliary to Archbishop Gannon, Bishop Edward P. McManaman fully lived his motto To Serve Christ. From his days as a Prep confessor to his days as a member of Prep's Board of Trus- tees, he was constantly involved with and devoted to Prep. Bishop Mc- Manaman truly possessed the spirit of Prep. -Y ry- --a ll' l 12105 ' len QQ.. ,w.,F N - Y' 1 , V ..,- , V Y ..... ... . t f ini gg . t . , X . if 'F i A M W 5 I f ef ,, 1 r M, . .. In August of that year, as the schools of the city prepared to open, the pastors of Erie's twelve Catholic Churches were summoned to a meeting with Bishop John Mark Gannon. At that meeting they were introduced to a project whose tremendous import they scarcely realized. The project? The founding of a Catholic high school Aa high school that would give all boys of the city an opportunity to establish a firm foundation for a future college education, a high school to be called Cathedral Preparatory School for Boys. A Bnshop's Dream With the promised support and cooperation of the assembled priests, Bishop Gannon initiated immediate action. Aided by Rev. Joseph J. Wehrle, S. T.D., then superintendent of diocesan schools, the Bishop planned to open classes in September. lt sounded impossible. But, open Cathedral Prep did, with classes held in the basement of St. Peter's Cathedral. The area provided four classrooms, a study hall, and a partitioned section which served as an office for the first headmaster, Father Wehrle. Under Father Wehrle's guidance, with Bt'shop Gannon providing the vital t'nspiration, Cathedral Prep and its one hundred boys were off to a propitious start. Front the very beginning the school endeavored to fulfill its promise to provide a sound Catholic education and to prepare boys for higher studies. The vert' first year saw the birth of the yearbook, The Lilcrulac, which was edited by the freshmen. It contained only one picturee ethat of Bishop Gannon. i rep 's Golden Years Monsignor Joseph J. Wehrle. Headmaster Named now to head this new institution, Doc Wehrle re- signed fronz Prep and Father Victor Miller was named head- nzaster during the summer of 1941. ln October of 1941, the new headnzaster broke ground for the long awaited new Ca- thedral Prep annex and on October 29th of the following year Bishop Gannon laid its cornerstone. In 1925 Prep prouclll' gradttatetl its ft'r.s't senior class qfort-1'-two young C'l1l'l'Xlll1l1 gentlemen. Among them was a ,future Bishop of the Erie Diocese, Alfred Michael Watson, bttsines'.s' manager lor the Lilcrulzlc .lor four years. In the years that 'followed that l't'rst commeneement the administrators came to realize that the f7l1Yl'SI'- cal plant was inadequate to meet the growing en- rollment. The subsequent purchase of the Downing building on West Ninth Street provided admint'.s'tra- tive offices, sc'ienee laboratorie.s, and ct librari' a temporary measure that would serve until a new building could be erected: at that time the Downing building would be razed. Ever planning, ever dreaming, Bishop Gannon launched in 1940-41 another of his ambitious edu- cational projects efjannon College. X1 fy'51f! ' The Downing Building The ceremony was linked to another celebration-that of Bishop Gannon's . fortielh anniversary as a priest, his twenty-fifth anniversary as a Bishop. As the building progressed through 1943-44, the school once more saw a change in administrators. Father Mil- ler was named pastor of St. John Parish in Erie in 1944, and Monsignor Robert B. McDonald, then head of the diocesan Department of Education, was appointed headmaster. Rev. AUred i Watson l now Bishop Watson l was named his assistant. The principal highlight of Monsignor McDonald's first year here was the dedication of the new Prep to Jesus Christ and Youth. The formal blessing of this beautU'ul stone structure on October 26th was part of the dedication of the Cathedral Center. This complex consisted of St. Peter's Cathedral, the episcopal residence, the Ca- thedral rectory, a synod hall, a Memorial Chapel for Bishops, the chancery office, and the new Cathedral Prep addition. Classically beautiful in its Gothic architecture, the new school plant, whose main en- trance faced an open court on West Ninth Street, provided twenty-two completely equipped classrooms, modern scientific laboratories, administration offices, youth administration offices, a gymnasium, a swimming pool, and a library noted for its beauty as well as for its usefulness. In the 1952-53 and in the 1953-54 seasons. Prep's basketball teams were State Catholic champions. Prep has continued its excellence in athletic contests up until this present Jubilee year, adding trophy after trophy to its coveted collection as it has accepted championship crowns in these fields of competition. Its development in these areas greatly contrasts its humble begimzings. Prep's athletes have gone on to colleges and out into the world not only as excellent sportsmen but as men polished with qualities of leadership and excellence in character and personality. The planners of the building which had been dedicated in 1944 had thought that the physical facilities would finally meet every conceivable need. But an ever-growing enrollment re- opened the space problem. In 1954 another addition was constructed: a building housing laboratories, four classrooms, a student senate. a health suite, an auditorium seating 1200, an indoor track now carpeted with astro-turf, and a rifle range. e--' . .iHP.M1:5!' -.'T.- -Q l The Most Reverend Amlcto Giovanni Cicognuni. In 1948 he realized that he had need of an Auxiliary Bishop to aid him in his work. Auxiliary Bishop Edward P. Bishop McManaman assisted as an in- valuable force until his untimely death in 1964ea death mourned by the entire area. In the following year, Auxiliary Bishop AUred M. To replace hint Bishop John Francis Whealon was consecrated in December of 1966 by Cardinal John Kroll of Philadelphia. The Archbishop retained his interest in the Prep students nonetheless. The curriculum is flexible, under- going constant progressive modification. Experimentation on the part of teachers to discover new and more eltective methods is always encouraged. and all latest developments in education are studied for possible adoption. R he wt I . f, 'S Prep's setting is truly signUicant. It stands within the shadow of the Cathedral and yet within hearing distance of the noises of the main streets of the city. Its situation is symbolic of the balance it main- tains between the spiritual and the material, presenting to its students the best of both worlds, striving to promote the development of values that will equip its graduates to make right decisions in later lUe. It thus realt'zes to the full Pope Pius XI's objectives of Christian education- the training of the supernatural man who thinks, judges, and acts consistently in accordance with right reason illuminated by the supernatural light of the example and teachings of Christ. Fully accredited by the Department of Public Instruction of the State of Pennsylvania and by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools, the school this year is staffed by eighteen Diocesan priests, twelve nuns, and thirty laymen. Over the years in addition to the present faculty, Prep has been staffed by some eighty diocesan priests, thirty Oblates of Saint Francis de Sales, fifteen Sisters of Saint Joseph, twenty- eight Sisters of Mercy, fourteen Sisters of Saint Benedict, three Sisters from the Order of Saint Francis, and forty-e1'ght lay teachers. The present enrollment of 1300 students is drawn from thirty-two parishes of the Greater Erie area. The curriculum at present provides for three levels of studvead- vanced placement, honors, and regular courses. Freshmen are assigned to these levels on the basis of entrance examinations' upperclassmen on the basis of their achievement in the previous year's classes. At Quarter Sessions following each report period. First Honors are awarded to students with minimum grades of 905 Second Honors to those with minimum grades of 85. Of the graduating class of 1970, 96.596 entered four-year colleges to pursue further education. Performance in national tests has been consistently outstanding. In the class of 1971, Prep's forty- sixth graduating class, four were finalists in their 'junior year in the National Merit Scholarship Qualtfring Tests, with an additional twenty-three receiving honorable mention. Some one hundred forty Prep graduates are members of the priesthood. Scores have entered the legal, judiciarv, medical, dental. and engineering pro- fessionsf others pursue careers in military science, education. journalism, government, diplomatic service, and in nzodern in- dustrial concerns. The school works in close cooperation with the families of the students, maintaining a close liason with parents through con- ferences and mailed reports and through an extremely active Mothers and Dads Association. Stressing the social aspect of man, it emphasizes the dignity of the individual regardless of , 31 F' hi.s race, color, creed, nationality. ability. or social position. Students of Prep are encouraged to be active members of their home parishes. ln addition to daily theology classes, the horarium provides for participation in Mass and the reception of the Sacraments regularly. And so, the golden path leads to this year 1971, shining with achievement, growth, fulfillment. Along its course many have inspired, supported, fortified this school. Outstanding among them, of course, was Bishop Gannon, to whom Cathedral Prep owes its very life. This year is a celebration of his foresight, his plans, his dream come true. Also worthy of special tribute are the thirty-two pastors ofthe Erie area who have given and who continue to give both financial and moral .support to the school. Without the pastors Cathedral Prep could not have opened: without them it could not haveflourished. The chief planner and guardian of Prep's golden road for over a quarter of a century has been its present headmastet-A Monsignor Robert B. McDonald. Noted throughout the city as an outstanding educator, he has held Cathedral Prep to high standards of excellence in all fields. His keen understanding of youth, their virtues and their needs, has established hint as a leadingfigure in the city of Erie. As for the Prepsters themselves, a word of Commendation from Monsignor is an incentive which urges his students on to scholarship, his teams on to victory. His twenty-seven years of stewardship have indeed merited a Well done, thou good andfaithful servantl Now the road lies ahead. What will the next year, the next decade bring? No one can say exactly. But one prediction can be safely made: it will be a good road. This years golden light will surely prove to be for Cathedral Prep but the dawn of an ever more glorious future. 415 2:-1 Q Y D x FACULTY . However, it is met during the course of a week, with, among other things, 100 pounds of roast beef, 200 pounds of hot dogs, 250 pounds of turkey, 75 dozen doughnuts, 4,000 bottles of milk, 3,000 bottles of pop, 1,800 ice cream sandwiches, 25 gallons of ice cream, and a good deal of hard work on the part of the cafeteria staff. In Memoriam: Ma Kaiser 11944-19611 During Prep's Golden Anniversary Year we wish to tribute the memory of Ma Kaiser who served the students so faithfully as cafeteria manager from 1944 to 1961.
