Born: June 12, 1877 Ordained: December 21, 1901 Consecrated Bishop: February 6, 1918 Installed Bishop of Erie: December 16, 1920 Appointed Assistant at the Pontifical Throne: November 4, 1944 Appointed Archbishop: November 25, 1953 Retired: December 14, 1966 Died: September 5, 1968 Archbishop John Mark Gannon died September 5, 1968, after a life of outstanding service to God and man. Throughout his years, he exemplified dedication to his beliefs. He strongly believed in the importance of Christ- ian education for the formation of responsible leaders. He consequently founded many schools. These included Cathedral Prep, which he established in 1921. Much could be said concerning the Archbishop and his accomplishments: but as he acted more than he wrote, it would be best to express our feelings by deeds also. We therefore respectfully dedicate the 1969 Literulae to Archbishop Gannon and our memories of him.

This past March marked the second and final year that Bishop John Francis Whealon served as bishop of the Erie Diocese. Being appointed the Archbishop of Hartford, Connecticut, earlier this year, he leaves the responsibility of providing an image and example for the students of Cathedral Prep to his successor. Archbishop Whealon established himself as a well educated man, noted for his knowledge of languages and the Bible. He also served as a teacher and administrator and gained much experience in the field of education. During his brief time as bishop of Erie, he had, through the Annual Catholic Charities Campaign, undertaken projects to expand assistance to the aged, unwed mothers, and other needy people of our diocese. Archbishop Whealonls dedication and service to the Diocese of Erie point to progress in the Archdiocese of Hartford. Our prayers go with Archbishop Whealon. As the first graduate of Cathedral Prep to be elevated to the rank of bishop, His Excellency Alfred Michael Watson demonstrates a special interest in the students of Prep. Having graduated from Cathedral Prep in 1925 and having been consecrated a bishop in 1965, Bishop Watson possesses the qualities of leadership and dedication, essential to the spirit of Prep. Furthermore, he portrays an outstanding Christian enthusiasm, so vitally needed in the world today. From the l940,s when he returned to Prep as an English teacher and assistant headmaster to his present relationship with Cathedral Prep students, Bishop Watson has motivated those around him to strive for excellence in all fields of life.
