The Prep School The Cathedral Preparatory School for Boys was founded 1n the year 1921 by Blshop Gannon It was the Hrst secondary school 1n the drocese that was strlctly college preparatory Under the Very Rev Joseph J Wehrle the first Headmaster the Cathedral basement was transformed for school purposes IHCO a large study hall and four classrooms In 1925 the Dowmng bu1ld1ng on West N1nth Street was purchased by the Blshop and turned over to the school to provlde for admlmstratlon oilices laboratory and classroom needs There are two courses taught at Prep the academic and the sc1ent16c The academlc IS desxgned to prepare students for the prlesthood and the profes s1ons wh1le the sc1ent16c stresses mathematlcs and laboratory scxences Both courses are des1gned to meet the requ1rements of schools of hlgher learmng In 1941 Blshop Gannon named Doctor Wehrle as Dean of the newly formed Gannon School of Art and Sc1ence caus1ng a great change 1n the Prep School adm1n1strat1on Rev Vlctor F M1ller former Pastor of Saxnt Bomface s Church Hammett and a member of the first Prep faculty was named to succeed Doctor Wehrle as Headmaster Plans for expansxon were made and on October 14 1941 ground was broken and constructxon work was started for a new and up tofdate Prep School Wlth the declarat1on of war xn December 1941 xt was doubtful that the con structlon work could go on but B1shop Gannon obtaxned pr1or1t1es to cont1nue the bu1ld1ng of the finest 1nst1tut1on 10 th1s sect1on of the country and the fulfill ment of hrs fondest dream The new bu1ld1ng w1ll house the executlve oflices class and study rooms an assembly hall and a large l1brary The sclence department w1ll have three large modern and fully equxpped laborator1es The new school w1ll contam a gymnas 1um sw1mm1ng pool handball court and a boxmg and wresthng room The present large study hall w1ll be changed 1nto a school cafeterla and k1tchen Prep has ma1nta1ned h1gh scholastlc standards and it IS confidently ex pected that Prep w1ll cont1nue those same h1gh standards 1n the new school for lt IS not the bu1ld1ng that makes the school Its graduates have entered all the professlons many of the Prep boys have become pr1ests doctors and teachers wh1le others have taken up work 1n eng1neer1ng and techmcal pursults The Prep boys of today are grateful to B1ShOp Gannon for takmg such a great 1nterest 1n youth and maklng Prep possxble We wlsh also to thank Doctor Wehrle and Father M1ller and all the members of the faculty for thexr part xn preparrng us for l1fe.
