They range from the Library Staff and the Dance Committee to the Debate Club and the Latineer. Development of the social aspect of its students is the purpose of the large number and variety of activities sponsored by the school. Without them school life would be- come an unexciting routine, and the knowl- edge of human relations would be missing from the curriculum. Extra-curricular activities, therefore, are , l W X n important to high school life. Through debating zz' 't l comes valuable experience for the speech tx of HY course and current events. His Excellency. the Most Reverend Edward F. Hoban Archbishop-bishop oi Cleveland Many thanks are in order to Arch-- bishop Edward F. Hoban for his many kindnesses and gitts to our school. Without his care tor our youth Cathe- dral Latin would not be nearly as fine a place, if it should manage to exist at all. Students have especially much to be thankful for. Throughout the dio- cese Catholic education has been flourishing under his direction. There are new high schools to relieve over- enrollment. Parishes are building grade schools. And Cleveland has its first minor seminary. To the thankful voices of many parents of parochial school children We would publicly like to add the students' gratitude and Wish Arch- bishop Hoban many more years as Bishop of Cleveland. After hours, when these duties were completed, he could often be seen doing the odd jobs around the school. The new position of Business Manager, created only this year, was filled by Brother Hamm. I-le was in charge of the purchases both for the faculty and for the school, Mrs, Mary Nicolosis ever increasing duties were chiefly secretarial in nature. Typing and correspondence took most of her time. These are the administrators who can be found working behind the scenes almost any time of the day. Participating on the football squad were five men, While the basket- ball team claimed the services of two more. Among other activities We find that Fresh- man B excelled in sodality membership with twenty-one members, While fifteen men offered their musical talents to the services of the band. Being active in all the extra-curricular activ- ities Wasn't enough for lB, each member Went even further to show his school spirit by selling at least ten Squidgulum books. The homeroom advisor, Brother Iames Roche, SM., along with class officers led their homeroom through a successful and spirited school year. Going down the hard way J Winning seven pennants in the Squidgulum Drive was only one of the feats accomplished by Freshman C. Among its forty-one members you can find vibrant interest in all the activ- ities. Spiritually speaking, just about the entire class devotes its time to the sodality and its ensuing projects. Painting signs, putting them up, and bringing them to rallies points out even more that lC had that Latin spirit. Foot- ball players, basketball players, debators- all could be found in lC. Combining both athletic efforts and intellec- tual achievements lC proved to be one ol the most enterprising classes in its division. Brother Bichard Gausling, SM., was the home- room advisor. Included in their accom- plishments is the fact that they finished third in the Sguidgulum. One of the biggest accomplishments of the class was that twenty-five members partici- pated in the sodality The freshmen grid squad took the interest of eight others, and the cross- country and basketball teams claimed the interest of four. Six members of the class were active in the two Cathedral Latin bands, three in the cadet band, three in the senior band. Schmile already 3 6 A variety of activities connected Freshman E with Latin. Football, basketball, sodality, C.S.M.C., and the band were only a few. Students participating in the sodality in- cluded William Susel, Edward Petkovich, Tom laksa, George Telenko, William Vincent, Stephen Peters, Tom Oflztourke, Kenneth Kaminski, and David Kanuch, while lim Haas, Michael Holvey, and Lewis Dobas were mem' bers of the C.S,lVl.C Composing or good part of that high calibre frosh football team were Vincent laksa, Telenko, Petkovich and Susel. Trying to live up to the motto was quite a feat. Freshman F had members in a multitude ot activities, including the sodality, band, foot- ball, and basketball. Friday was the day designated ior class meetings. These meetings consisted in various committees reporting on different events hap- pening throughout the school, and discussing ways and means of contributing to or control- ling them. Brother Williarn,Behringer, SM.-, was homeroom advisor. Sitting Bull never had it so good. 3 5 Freshman G, composed of thirty-nine Latin men, showed progressing spirit this year by winding up high in both the Squidgulum and Community Chest Drives. The class was run on a democratic basis. When a problem for discussion came up, class officers presided and the entire class participated in the discussion. The class was divided into the Spirit, Drives, Decorations, and Maintenance Committees. Freshman G also took an active part in school activities with 14 sodalists, 6 men on the frosh football squad, and three band members. Helping to guide these men of Latin was Brother Carl Smith, SM. Truly, l955 was one of the greatest years that a Latin speech team has ever had. With- out much fanfare, six Latin speakers won for themselves trips to the national tournament in San lose, California, this summer. At the district tournament March 4 and 5, the culmination of the year, the Speech Club entered lO contestants. Nine of them competed in final rounds, many in two events. This per- formance netted them seven trophies and many new records. Qualifying for the national tournament were Marvin Cook, extemporaneous speaking, and the debate team of William Lynch and Gerald Goudreau, all of whom finished first. ln Student Congress, too, Latin rose to fame. Planned by the dance committee, with able guidance offered by the faculty moderator, Mr. Peter Szemersky, the dances were as suc- cessful as they were enjoyable. As an added attraction, entertainment was provided during intermission. At the P dr G Ball, Tony Caruso and his Four Tes', who were brought by Cleveland disk jockey Bolo Forester contributed their talent to the gala occasion, The P G G Ball was held at the Park Lane Villa where the overflow crowd danced to the music of Charlie Barrett and his orchestra. Q More elaborate than the P dr G Ball was the annual Christmas Dance, a semi-formal affair held at the Alcazar Hotel. This dance was a huge success, since a good percentage of the upper-classmen attended this yuletide frolic. The mellow music was provided by Bob Pattie and his orchestra. The featured enter- tainment during intermission consisted of a small combo, composed of four musically inclined seniors. Although they were not as successful as most optimistic Latin rooters had hoped, the record compiled by the 1955 Latin basketball squad nevertheless was something that they could be proud of. ln the Senate race the cagers ended the regular season with a lU-4 record and a tie for second place. ln the first four games the Lion quintet was very successful, Whipping Iohn Adams, East Tech, Benedictine and Iohn Hay. But there fol- lowed a four game losing streak, first to Glenvilles inspired all junior team, then to St. lgnatius and Holy Name in independent contests, and finally to East High. Collinwood, lohn Adams and East Tech all fell before the improved Lions. The game with Tech was a significant accomplishment be- cause it marked the second victory over the champion Scarabs, who did not lose to any other East Senate team. The final five games saw Latin overcome lohn Hay, East High and Collinwood, but drop return engagements with Benedictine and Glenville. Behind the activities of their sons and sup- porting the welfare of the school in every possible manner are the parents of Latin boys working through the Mothers' Club and Dads' Club. The assistance to the school can hardly be sufficiently emphasized. The Dads' Club again sponsored the Squid- gulum, as it has done in the past, and oper- ated l2 booths. They also raised money for a window in the new chapel of the faculty house. Also highlighting the organizations calendar of activities were two dinners, one in February and the other in March to honor St. Patrick. Meetings of all members are held every month during the school year. They take place on the first Tuesday of the month from 8:30 to l2:OO in the evening. Officers are Mr. Samuel Ferrazza, presidentg Mr. loseph Grecol, vice- presidentg Mr. Dean Bryant, secretary, and Mr, George Weber, treasurer. The mothers hold their meetings on the third Thursday of every month ai 8:30 p.m. Mrs. Iosephine Scavone, presidentg Mrs. Anne Sun- dra and Mrs. Marie Kaval, vice-presidentsg Mrs. Margaret Sroub, recording secretary, Mrs. Marie Goudreau, corresponding secretary, and Mrs. Clare Kunesh, treasurer, lead the group. Some of the accomplishments of the Mothers' Club during the year were the Card Party on October l5 and the Christmas Party for the brothers on December l6. They also spon- sored a shower when the new faculty house was completed, and a Communion breakfast in March. Through their tireless efforts the parents' organizations have demonstrated to their sons that they, too, know what Latin spirit means. No amount of thanks could show the gratitude of the faculty and students for their many acts of sacrifice and service for our benefit. Their best reward, perhaps, is the deep pleasure and satisfaction of knowing that they have accomplished so much. Rev IohnI Kucla CLERGY PATRONSHIPS His Excellency. the Most Reverend Edward F. Hoban.
