Begin, Auxiliary Bishop of Cleve- land, and Rev. Dr. Clarence E. Elwell, Superintendent of Schools. Men of dynamic power these . . . alert in their supervision of OPERA- TION MANHOOD. Dear Graduat es , The theme of your year-book shows that you are on the alertg you are conscious of a future that must be naturally affected by the advances of science. The success of man in unearthing the hidden wisdom of God in His material creation should challenge you to a greater knowledge and appreciation of the Divine Plan in the order of grace and its propagation throughout the world. No matter what revelations an atomic age may bring to you, there is always the unchangeable order of grace which must direct these novelties to their proper end. There is a hidden energy in the supernatural life of man which must also be released-an energy which will communicate itself to others, vitalize them with its own power and identify them with its own divine source. The knowledge of religion which you have received at Cathedral Latin is a treasure which you must not guard selfishly within you. It is a message which you must spread far and wide. Your way of life guided by sound Christian principles must transmit to others the message of Christ's gospelg it must animate them with the very life of God and through His grace, identify them with Him for time and eternity. Cherish likewise the secular knowledge which you have received a knowledge acquired in its proper reference to your eternal destiny. Come what may in your life- time, whatever man's wisdom may devise, it will but confirm your faith in God and afford you added oppor- tunities and new methods of multiplying Christians in the world. The Church wishes religion to be something alive and living. And that is the reason for the Sodality-to take religion out of the textbook and place it in the heart. Father Charles Lees, S.M. of North Catholic High, Pittsburgh, preached the fresh- man-sophomore retreat. These spiritually prof- itable days were climaxed in general Com- munion on the morning of the closing day, after conferences, classroom discussions, read- ing, silence, and Confession had helped pre- pare the way. The band's record goes back almost to the foundation of the school itself. Where other activities have flared, then died out, the band has held its own, always managing to capture its share of Latin's glory. Many times a year the band proves itself necessary, but it seems to stand out in a very spe- cial way during the football season. It is always ready to cheer the team to victory, conveying to the players on the field the confidence and enthusiasm of the crowd in the stands. The spring concert, a yearly musical hit, presents outstanding group and individual performances. Under the able guidance of Mr. John Hruby and Father Joseph Zeinz, S.M. the band has continued to make history of its own. FRONT ROW: left to right: A. Oswald, R. Mervar, R. Cikra, R. Feskanin, R. AN Mapping grid strategy with Coach Augie Bossu lseatedl are, lleft to rightl Tom Behm, Jim 0'Day, and Jerry Mullin s the August leaf is removed from the calendar and the students once more turn their minds to math, sciences, and languages, here at Cathedral Latin most minds turn also to the gridiron. With the coming of the 1947 season, the football picture was greatly altered. Au- gust Bossu had replaced Herb Eisele, who for eighteen years dominated the local schol- astic football scenes with his powerhouse teams, as head coach, and Aubery Strosnider moved into Bill Belanchi's position as line coach. This situation aroused a great deal of speculation throughout Ohio. Can the new staff keep up the reputation so strongly established by their predecessors, was the question prominent on many lips. Yes, Augie and Ab were on the spot, but one thing at least they were assured of: that was the one hundred per cent backing of the student body, come what may. All speculation however, was soon replaced with the knowledge that Latin's new staff was the finest and the Lions were on their way to their fifth consecutive city title. With Augie and Ab at the helm, all Latin fans are looking forward to even brighter grid horizons. Highlighting Latin's 'I947 gridiron season, were a series of last half rallies, most strik- ing of which was the final quarter attack which led to twenty-one points in the senate opener against East Tech. Outstanding for their aggressive perform- ances through the en- tire season, were co- captain Marty Kiousis, All-American, All-Ohio, and All-Scholastic, back Joe Pilla, All-Catholic, All-Ohio, and All-Schol- astic, tackle Joe Cam- panella, All-Scholastic, and back Earle Gentile, All-Scholastic. IGNATIUS 12-LATIN 51 Coach Augie Bossu introduced himself into Cleveland scholastic grid circles by piloting his first Latin team to a 51-to-'l2 romp over their traditional opening game rival, St. Ignatius. Dom Cardaman led the Lion attack on the lgnations with three touchdowns. Close behind him was Earle Gentile, who twice bisected the Wildcat goal line. Bill Petersen accounted indirectly for two scores with passes to ends Tom Behm and Roger Saunders, Joe Raggets added the eighth TD and Petersen three extra points. EAST TECH 7-LATIN 27 In their first league contest, the Lions looked like a defeated eleven until the final period. With a late surge of power, amassing twenty-one points, they overcame a 7-to-6 deficit. Latin drew first blood when Joe Raggets plunged over from the one in the opening period. Crump, however, soon put the Artisans in the lead. Early in the final period Petersen scored, closely followed by Earle Gen- tile's two touchdowns. Al Habinak converted for the three points after. pmfecl femme! Gentile counted for five touchdowns, most impressive of which was his T02-yard return of the second half kick- off. Bill Petersen accounted for two with tosses Tom Behm and Gil Baach. Baach also took a 20-yard effort from substitute quarterback Jack Wise for another. Three points after were added by Al Habinak's proficient place kicking. COLLINWOOD 6--LATIN 34 Playing under the Stadium mazdas for the first time this season, Latin overcame one of the big obstacles in their bid for the city championship, by beating Collin- wood 34-to-6. Dom Cardaman opened the scoring when he went over from the six in the first quarter. Collinwood knotted the score on an intercepted pass. In the second half, the Railroaders concentrated on Gentile and Petersen, paving the way for Raggets, Card- aman, and Pilla, who went over twice. Hap Habinak made good four points. Sly? They emerged with the streak ended and their name a little lower in the ratings as a result of a suprise 'I4-to-7 loss. Gentile made Latin's only touchdown and Habinak the extra point which tied the score in the third quarter. CENTRAL O-LATIN 22 Undaunted by their heartbreaking loss of the week before, the Lions returned to Senate play and the win column as they shut-out Central 22-to-0. On the second play of the game, Petersen connected with Raggets for a touchdown pass. lt was Joe again, going around end for the score in the third quarter. Habinak this time converted. Another aerial, this one going to Behm, and Habinak's extra point, brought the score to 20-0. A Central fum- ble, resulting in a safety, completed the scoring. MASSILLON 12--LATIN 16 In a see-saw battle, Augie Bossu's Lions overcame the Massillon Tigers 'I6-to-I2 with a last minute touchdown which thrilled 25,000 fans at the Stadium. ln the third quarter a blocked punt rolled behind all defense, was scooped up by a Massillonite, and carried over. Joe Raggets balanced the scores when he returned a punt to pay dirt. Habinak converted. Massillon again took the lead, returning an intercep- tion to the Latin end zone. Soon after Tom Behm caught a Tiger behind his own goal, Petersen pushed one across. The Toe added his second point of the evening. BENEDICTINE 6-LATIN 13 Playing in a freezing downpour that had turned the Stadium turf into a sea of mud, Latin blotted out Benedictine's hopes for the East Senate title by edging their Catholic opponents 'I3-to-6. The Bengals scored early in the second quarter. How- ever Joe Pilla intercepted a Bengal aerial and three plays later Gentile carried it across. Returning from the half time rest, the Lions quickly pushed the pigskin over, Gentile getting his twelfth. Habinak split the uprights for the final digit. JOHN ADAMS 6-LATIN 13 Again being forced to play on a muddy field, the Latin Lions completed their bid for the East side title by sinking the Adams Rebels 'l3-to-6. A few minutes after the kickoff, Bill Petersen slithered through for the initial score, Habinak adding the point. lt was the third quarter until they scored again, this time Tom Behm receiving the only pass Latin attempted. Adams got their lone tally when one of the frequent Hodous passes connected. f 1 e. Shoulder pads and cleats give way to knee pads and sneakers. The fans' Go Varsity Go is now aimed at their favorite basketball quintet. Completing the changes in the athletic department for 1947-48 was the installation of Leo Walczuk as head basketball coach, replacing Al Hook. Coach Walczuk, a native of Akron, Ohio, is a graduate of the basketball minded Se- ton Hall College of East Orange, New Jersey, where he played two years of the hardwood sport and starred on the track team. In his senior year he was track captain. Not long after his arrival at Latin, Leo began drilling his cage charges in preparation for a gruelling fifteen game schedule. A few sessions with the team convinced him that, Latin will suffer no 70-to-12 drubbings this year from Benedictine or any one else . Playing his second year on the varsity, Dick Jeric proved himself an able captain as he led the Lion assault with his accurate shooting from any spot on the court. Tabbed the most un- lucky guy on the team, is Sal Jefferies who was plagued by a constant run of injuries from the beginning of the season till the end. Even so, Jeff,' was al- ways an asset. Small but swift, is an ample description for Bill Liuzzo. Just reach- ing five feet, five inches, Bill, in his sec- ond year of varsity com- petition, kept the op- p o sitio n wondering where he was. Paul Schneller used his full six feet two inches to aid his teammates in their 8 victories. This year, his second with the Lions' varsity, Paul was particularly effec- tive retrieving the ball off the backboard. ,,-'ff 2 W' ,wg - Hank Najpaver proved himself to be not only a master of the back- board, but also a scor- ing ace when the Lions were on the attack. Hank was among the top scorers in the school. Operating from the guard position, Bill Booker was equally ef- ficient on both offense and defense. His eye for baskets earned for him the fourth position in the Latin scoring column. Another returning let- terman, Lou Supan used his speed and ex- cellent ball handling to excellent advantage. He kept the opposing guards in constant fear of having the ball stol- en away by his will-o- the-wisp hands. Though only a iunior, Dick Theisen led all the Latin cagers in scoring. Working from the pivot position, his long arms, extending from a six foot seven inch body, kept the ball well out of the reach of the foe's de- fense. -gt ggi xg H X , Bk 4 , N :'-5 -Yh +33-1 .. Instrumental in wording off the at- tempt was Al Hodous who accounted for twenty-two paints. Chuck Putka was high for Latin with eleven. GLENVILLE 35-LATIN 53 In what was probably their mast brilliant performance of the year, Latin trounced the favored Glenville Tar- blaoders 53-to-35. Dick Jeric wound up his scholastic cage career by splitting the mesh for 18 points. -- .Liffi - . ' , 5 . i sg-Q . Employing a man-to-man defense for the first time in five years, the Junior Varsity hardwooders fin- ished the season with seven wins and as many losses. Among those schools who compiled the deficit side of the record were West Tech, Canton Catholic, Col- linwood, Central, Benedictine, and Glenville. On the brighter, positive page appear the victims of the Jay Vees, St. Ignatius, twice, East Tech, East, John Hay, St. Michael, and John Adams. Outstanding players included, Vince Maniaci, a con- sistent scorer, Bernie Porter, a good defensive player, and Tom Kordic, an excellent ball handler. Compositely, the underclassmen sparkled on defense but lacked scor- ing power. -108- Cathedral Latin's Freshmen cagers wound up their first season with four triumphs as compared to a baker's dozen of losses. Leading the first year men, with steady scoring, were, Captain Mulchrone and Tom Horvath. The remainder of the squad proved more efficient on defense than they did offensively. The Frosh opened their season with a 42-to-27 de- feat by Collinwood and a 32-to-'IO trouncing at the hands of Kirk Junior High. St. Ignatius, Benedictine, Patrick Henry, and Gilmour Academy accounted for de- feats while the plebes managed to pull other games away from Empire Junior High, Benedictine, and Glen- Many Mulchwne ville. From what had been a blanket of solid white, sprout the first blades of grass. Spring's gentle grip encompasses us and arouses in us a yearning for the outdoors. In answer to our yen, the local cinder paths become alive with new athletic activity. Here the distance men pace off yardage. There the dash men and hurdlers speed over their shorter courses. Around the track the batons are passed and the air of the infield is filled with the cries of high jumpers, shot putters, and discus throwers. Dominating all this activity at Latin is the booming voice of Ab Strosnider, head track coach. ln his eagerness to produce a top-flight track team, he flits from place to place, instructing the dash men in the crouch start, checking the pace of the milers with a stop watch, and finding the flaws in the form of the hurdlers. Ab is always seeking to add to the numerous trophies acquired by his cindermen in the past. 4'LAMBERT, FUREY AND VISHEY OVER THE TOP. -111- FIRST ROW: J. Furey, R. Williams, J. Vishey, E. Gul- la, R. Regalbuto, L. Mason, J. Vargo. Believing strongly in the old adage, Practice makes perfect, Jerry Furey receives the ba- ton from his running mate on the two mile relay squad, Jack Var- go, in a pre-race warm- up. Set for the gun are Ernie Gulla, Dick Haas, Dick Williams, and Joe Vishey, all members of the four mile relay team. They enter 1948 competition as defend- ing champions for that distance. Gulla and Vishey, co-captains of the team, were mem- bers of last year's cham- pionship quartet. E uilt around co-captains Ernie Gulla and Joe Vishey, members of last season's state champion four mile relay team, Latin's thinclads looked to be regular title threats. Others returning from last year's squad included, Al Fifolt and Don Lesiak, hud- lers and dashmen Earle Gentile, Bill Von- Driska, and Al Fisco. ln the middle dis- tances were Tom Caito and Carmen Pinti. That' the athletes involved in a bitter struggle for victory might know that they have the undiminished backing of their fans it is essential to have an inter- mediary. Serving in this position at Latin are the cheer- leaders. lt falls to their lot to orouse the fans into am- plifying their feelings vocally. Backbone of the cheering corps includes ileft to rightl, J. Gaglione, M. Maddalena, R. Hanna, E. Grafinger, head cheerleader, P. Cogan, and R. Podojil. Missing: D. Smith. Under the direction of Bro. Jose Cintron and led by that robust senior Gene Grafinger, this year's cheer- leading staff introduced several new yells and songs. Their continuous activity kept alive the spirit of the fans, even in the dark hours of the Holy Name game. The fans in turn, relayed this spirit to the team and kept active in them the incentive to win. -117- During our four years at Cathedral Latin we have completed the cycle which is symbolized within these pages. Our OPERATION MANHOOD is com- plete. We go forth from Latin fortified with knowl- edge of world progress and world problems. Seebold, S.M., Cathedral Latin has witnessed one of the most progressive years in its history. ln Father Seebold we have found not only a com- petent coordinator of our scholastic activities, but also a true friend, ready and willing at any time to help the student focus his school, personal, and spiritual life on a successful completion of Operation Manhood. -120- The distinction of honor roll rating for four years is merited by James Kunes, Ernest Simak, and Louis Supan.
