Christian Brotherhood Through Marys Mother- hood featured the Sodality year. Much of the success of our Sodality was due to the untiring ellorts of our prefect, Bill Davitt, and his assistants: Kathryn Clevenger, vice-prefectg Rosemary New- man, secretary: George Donnelly, treasurer. Bob Kyle also performed a praiseworthy job as presi- dent ol' the VVichita Diocesan Council. C.H.S. students really gave Christian Brother- hood a boost as S2 delegates started the year oil right by attending the K.S.S.U. Leadership School Father Mann, C.Ss.R., was guest speaker at a spe- cial Sodality meeting and talked on A Church VVithin a Church-the Christian Home. Catholic Book VVeek was observed by each home room con- tributing one or more Catholic books to the school library. Catholic action burst forth as a group of aml bitious Sodalists formed the Radio Workshop, com- posed a broadcast and presented it over a local radio station. True Charity was shown when the TWENTYFTHREE Sodality collected and sent clothing for the Holy Rosary Indian Mission in South Dakota. A record number of canned foods for the starving people in Europe was brought in, with Room 36 topping the school, for which they received the Sodality Flag. With the turn of the semester, Sodalists took time out for spiritual rejuvenation in the form of a three- day retreat, given by Rev. George Iungels, C.P. HChrist in My Lifew was the subject ot a talk given by Rev. john I. Walsh, SI., as he inspired the students to higher ideals.Catholic Home Week introduced three new Sodality projects: Family Rosary, Family Consecration to the Sacred Heart, and Family Communion. The last part of our theme, Through Mary's Motherhoodf, was emphasized by the Living Ros- ary every month at Holy Hour and on the feast of Our Lady of Lourdesg by the promotion of the con- secration of the Wichita Diocese to the Immaculate Heart of Mary: and by the organization of the Hg Club to further devotion to Our Lady of Fatima. The building is of Bedford stone and is a tribute to Rt. Rev. Monsignor Farrell's thirty-seven years as superin- tendent. Each year finds some added improvement in the buildings, equip- ment, or grounds, and, while these buildings represent a monument of perfect architecture, Monsignor's great- est work is the religious and cultural training of those who have the good fortune to be entrusted to his care. The faculty of the Sisters of St. Ios- eph has been augmented from two teachers in 1890, when they were teach- ing in the pro-Cathedral, to sixteen Sis- ters and two lay teachers at the present time. The members of the faculty have been trained with thorough care and hold degrees from the Catholic Univer- sity of America, from Notre Dame University, Creighton University, Wich- ita University, and Friends University. The spiritual guidance program is under the direction of Rev. Aloysius I. Felling. The courses of study offered in Cathe- dral High School include four years of religion, Latin, French, German, Spanish, English, mathematics, history, speech and science, and complete com- mercial, home economics, and indus- trial arts courses. In the music depart- ment, piano, organ, voice, glee club. chorus, history of music, harmony and music appreciation may be pursued. All work and no play is not Cathe- dral's moito. Recreation is well pro- vided. The highlight of the year was the May festival sponsored by Mrs. Sally Murdock and Mrs. A. O'R0urke, which rivaled in beauty and harmony the most elaborate ballroom. The games in the afternoon and the dancing in the evening were considered by the stu- dents as the major social event of the school year. The Easter Prom, spon- sored by the seniors, was next in rank. Following in line, the Hallowe'en and Valentine parties are still featured on memory's wall. Cathedral High School is affiliated with the State and with the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. Its curriculum ad- mits the student to any college without examination. This year the Cathedral High School numbers 476 pupils. The school and the high standard of work is not only a tribute to the Sisters of St. Ioseph but also to the Rt. Rev. Monsignor Farrell, whose special interest is the imparting of religious instruction, but who is a counselor to the students in every phase ol education. THIRTY-NINE Class History Your Shamrock news reporter is about to bring you, year by year, the greatest news story ever to hit C.H.S.-how the present class of 1946 went through the years to hit the headlines. Cuthezlral High School, Sept., 1942 -Muy, 1943 As your reporter viewed some IO3 green freshmen who were to be the future class of '46, he saw hopes of success gleaming in every eye. To fulhll these hopes, they elected Bill Davitt and Pat Rohrig as class officers. Soon there were no doubts in their minds, as they took in the annual retreat, given by Rev. B. I. Murray, SJ., to give them spiritual strength. Father George Schmidt began his suc- cessful term as basketball coach, but the team, a little slow to mold into shape, had an up and down season, winning four while dropping fifteen. In scholastic attainment, they were high, as Letty Lou Buser, Verda Isenbart, Iackie Lou Kienzle, and Beverly Staib won Gold CU honors. Musical talent was discovered in the persons of Mary Dunn, Ioan Hauser, and Rita Steinkirchner. Thus was finished the First lap on the upward climb. September, 1943 - May, 1944 Officers chosen to lead the class onward for the second year were: Bill Davitt, presidentg Beverly Staib, vice-president, jackie Lou Kienzle, secretaryg and Bill Rosenhamer, treasurer. This year, Father Iustin, C.P., led them heavenward by conducting the annual retreat. Father Schmidt and his basket- ball team really got rolling, winning seventeen and losing only six games, and placing fourth in the State Tournament at Topeka. Iohnny McConnell, Iack Shields, Pat Rohrig, and George Donnelly began their basketball careers. Five of the class: Letty Lou Buser, Donald Bell, Iohnny McConnell, Bob Peters, and Elaine Vandewalle, won Gold UC honors. Kathryn Clevenger stepped in and won the title of Miss Cathedral. A poet or two was discovered as Rosemary Newman, lean Sieg, and George Donnelly had their poems published in the Midwest Anthology of High School Poetry. Mary Dunn, Beverly Denton, and Rita Steinkirch- ner placed in the Diocesan Music Festival. Every- one, including the class, was pleased with the ac- complishments as they moved slowly onward to upper classmen. September, 1944 - May, 1945 The goal half reached and at the peak of their high-school dareer, the class elected Iohnny Mc- Connell, president, lack Shields, vice-president, Bill Davitt, secretary, and Bob Kennally, treasurer, to lead them forward in a big year. Tom Korn- haus took over the basketball reins and produced one of the best teams ever to hit C.H.S', with a rec- ord of seventeen won and four lost. The team also took the City Championship without losing a game, and won the Regional Tournament at New- FORTY ton. Bob Chadd and Larry Duffy served as basket- ball managers. The baseball team, too, Hnished suc- cessfully, taking third in the state. Patricia Beal- mear, Donald Bell, Mary Cigainero, and Iohnny McConnell received Gold C ' honors. Father George Iungles, C.P., gave the annual retreat, which was a great spiritual success. Acting talent was discovered in the persons of Patricia Bealmear, Bill Davitt, Dolores Hartman, and Peggy Straw. Bill Davitt placed First in the school apologetics contest and also was one of the winners who repre- sented the Wichita diocese at Topeka. Rita Stein- kirchner won the title of Miss Cathedral, which marked the second consecutive time the class had gained the honor. They were hosts to the seniors at the annual Iunior-Senior Banquet, and so the junior year moved peacefully and success- fully to a close. September, 1945 - May, 1946 At long last, they reached the highlight of their career. They were seniors, and great things were expected of them. They elected Bob Peters, presi- dent: lack Shields, vice-presidentg Iackie Lou Kienzle, secretary, and Marilyn Mueller, treasurer. The retreat-the last for some-was again con- ducted by Father George Iungles, C.P. Tom Korn- haus' basketeers Finished with a .500 average, ten won and ten lost. This year marked the first time in fourteen years that C.H.S. played football. The season was ended with a record of four wins and Hve defeats. It was through the untiring efforts of Rt. Rev. Monsignor Farrell and the Shamrock Booster Club that football returned to C.H.S. The Sodality had a very successful year, with Bill Davitt as prefect, Kathryn Clevenger, vice-prefect, Rose- mary Newman, secretary, and George Donnelly, treasurer. Peggy Straw won the school apologetics contest, represented Cathedral at the diocesan elimi- nations, and was awarded the state trophy in To- peka. Iimmy Knapp kept alive the tradition of the class by selling his way to the title of Annual Boy. The Shamrock Spotlight grew bigger and better as a journalism course was initiated this year. Pa- tricia Bealmear, Philys Curtis, Ieannine McNally, Bill Phillips, and Peggy Straw kept the acting tal- ents of the class alive. They were augmented by Bill Davitt at the Rockhurst High School Speech Tournament. The Student Council functioned very well under its president, Donald Bell, who also was one of the winners in the Diocesan Book Review Contest. To prove that safety is one of the char- acteristics of Cathedral students, the school took First place in the inter-high-school safety contest, under the inspiration of Iohnny McConnell, presi- dent of the Safety Council. They sponsored the Easter Prom, which proved highly successful. And thus the class of ,46, with a memorable week of commencement exercises, topped by class night and conferring of diplomas by the Most Reverend Bis- hop Winkelmann, finished their four years at C.H.S., reached their goal, and really made the headlines!
