Senior Class History All are architects of Fate, Working in these walls of time, Some with massive deeds and great, Some with rudimentr of rhyme. -Longfellow. September, ninteen hundred and twenty-six, ushered us into Cathedral Highi School, all buoyed up with high hopes. Already the fine sands of the big hour-glass had begun to trickle quietly and stealthily, shocking us into the reality that we had no time to lose if we were to imbibe all the knowledge required to make the first year's grade. We had our full measure of little difficulties to contend with but strove diligently and faithfully to ac- complish our allotted tasks. We made our debut in dramatics, presenting a one-act play for which we received unstinted praise. We wrestled with our grades, overcoming all ob- stacles. The sand was one-fourth drained from the hour-glass, the first year had passed very rapidly. We began the second year with broader views on school life. The sand in the faithful hour-glass began to record the second span of our high school life. Past experience had already taught us that Time waits for no map. However, we found time for social activities and staged the first joint Sophomore party, where the spirit of gaiety prevailed. We entered our play Seven in One in a contest at Peabody. VVe also realized that we were faced with keen competition in striving for supremacy in grades, athletics and activities. Meanwhile the soft and silent sand slid sifting through the glass, and ere long the Sopho- more year had passed into eternity, stamped upon our memory as one of the happiest and most profitable thus far spent in school. The creamy-colored silicate now began its stubborn How upon the third lap of time. We produced the wonderful play Chaperon, of which we were justly proud. The Iunior- Senior banquet was pronounced the best and most enjoyable ever given at Cathedral. The Girls organized their sodality. We worked with enthusiasm and pep to attain envied places on the football and basketball teams. We derived wonderfully untold profit from the first annual retreat in the history of Cathedral, given by Rev. Father Donnelly, S. I., from Saint Louis. The sands of time streamed unrelentlessly on and the hour-glass was approximately three-fourths drained. Another year had slipped byg a prodigious amount of work had been accomplished. E Viewing the little heap of sand remaining in the glass on the opening of the fourth year, we were at once impressed with the fleeting flight of time. We had much to accomp- lish. We found an added stimulus in the annual retreat in October, given by the Rev. Father Sylvester Iuergens, S. M., of Maryhurst Normal, Kirkwood, Mo. This retreat was a mile-stone -along our life's journey, leaving an indelible impress. The organization of the Boys' sodality proved an influential asset to Cathedral, imbueing us with lofty ideals and aspirations. We enjoyed one of the most colorful basketball seasons and succeeded in annexing the title of The Annual Boy to the Senior candidate. A one- act play in honor of the Rt. Rev. Monsignor's twenty-fourth anniversary was presentedg another play Abbu San of Old Iapan was pronounced an outstanding success. We capped it all by producing one of the most beautiful annuals in the history of the school. And now, the hour-glass has run its courseg the last tiny grain of sand has fallen and our work is accomplished. We pass out into the wide, wise old world to take our places, where we shall strive to exemplify and apply what we have garnered in our four years' sojourn at Cathedral-the happiest years along the pathway of our fast declining youth. The Spirit of Time shall teach me speed. I95O THE CATHEDRAL ' E----Q6 E 9 Seniors eh, Y 5 3 Q 5 i 5 ? i . Time flax the worth of God Hfmfelf PAGE FORTY-Nl NE THE CATH EDRAL - Q Q9 CTIIIG Annual R.etI'68t the scholastic year was the annual retreat for the high-school students, held October 28th, 29th and goth, IQ2Q. Our year's Annual would not be com- plete without recording the salient fea- tures of this event, so influential on our school-life, so replete with benefits and so productive of lasting effects. The spiritual exercises were ably conducted by the Reverend Sylvester P. Iuergens, S.M., chaplain of Mary- hurst Normal of Kirkwood, Missouri. There is no doubt, but the student- body will derive great benefit every time they read this summary of those happy, serene and peaceful days, so full of heavenly messages, so burdened with the all-powerful axiom of what will it profit a man to gain the whole world and stiffer the loss of his im- mortal soul. Let us recall from time to time the subjects considered in the program of these days of silence and recollection: They were practical meditations on God, Death, Hell, Mortal Sin, Confes- sion, The Blessed Sacrament, Profan- ity, Vocation and The Blessed Virgin. And what interest those questionnaires evoked on each of these talks, in relation to our practical every-day lives! Do you recall the lively interest aroused by the question-box? How swiftly the time passed, although we were deeply and constantly preoccupied with things purely spiritual! And Oh, what joy and peace took possession of our souls in the closing days and hours of these spiritual exercises! Let memory betimes remind us of the well-balanced time-table of each day's ex- ercises and recall the final crowning act of the day, when we assembled within the hal- lowed walls of the Cathedral to recite the Rosary in common and bow in humble and suppliant adoration when the benediction of the Blessed Sacrament sent us home, in peace with ourselves and the Creator! We cannot close this theme in a more fitting way, than to recall the final resolutions suggested on the souvenir holy-picture of the retreat and asking ourselves anew in how far we have lived up to their fulfillment. May those of us, who will again attend Cathedral next year, look forward with great anticipation to the annual retreat of IQ30, resolved to derive even still greater benefits from its incalculable spiritual opportunities. 4 Rnv. In fact, they created such an uproar that Mr. Chart Ielt it his duty to in- vestigate. What's this all about? D0n't you know it's nearly class time and we IHUSL make a good impression. That's just it, clicked old man Remington. How do you think we can make a lasting impression without a name for our workshop! There were several surprised ejaculations of OI-I! Well, I never thought of that, came from a Polished desk. I heard that hook say something about 'rhythmatic writers,' but I couldn't feature that as a title. You would he sarcas- But he never hnished. For just then there was a grinding ol' hrakes, a purr of a motor, and a maroon-colored coupe came to an abrupt stop right Linder the window. The hooks, the machines, and the desks tried in vain to see, hut Mr. Chart had the advantage. Well, I'll he, who is that driving? lust then the car gave a sudden shoot up Topeka. The name for our class! Yes, the name had been selected, for the students were just going to soar to success. The next day was something like a spring housecleaning, and heautiliul pictures of ships were hung on the walls. The captain of them all was the great Flying Cloud. The Chart waved to and fro, book leaves flapped about, and the typewriters happily clicked, clicked their gesture of gratitude to the man, Rt. Rev. Msgr. Farrell, who had equipped and made possible a commercial course at dear Cathedral High. 'Time is short in proportion to its lzappfzzexf. PAGE FIFTY SIX I95O E The Library Q Y ! THE CATH EDRAL l K: i-- .- The picture presents to view a corner of the library. The girls seated at the tables are senior students who have done part-time library service for the year. Each English student in high school must secure a certain number of points by out- side readingg otherwise full credit is not given for an English course. Since in a sense all one reads sinks into the heart and tinges thought, it is desirable that this required reading be done from a list of carefully selected books. So great however is the demand on our city library from Wichita's two universities and three high schools that it is often im- possible for a student to find even one of the books on his prescribed list. But a book report is required and, of course, the student selects at random from the chaotic mass of current literature. We faced a predicament, and the only way to meet it was to go to work and build up the fiction department of the Cathedral high school library. Since the reorganization of our sodality two years ago, the Catholic Literature com- mittee has functioned admirably and effectively in that direction. Through its efforts many good Catholic novels have been placed on our shelves, several of which were ob- tained by procuring subscriptions to the Sacred Heart Messenger. By the way, have you seen that advertisement on the back of your Sacred Heart Magazine, With five sub- scriptions one of the following books free? Please remember us when you renew your subscription. The Parent Teachers' Association has evinced great interest in our library as the sixty volumes received in the last three years admirably testify. May this slight gesture of recognition of their interest in Catholic Youth be in some measure a compensation for their inestimable gift. For smaller gifts we are indebted to many other donors who saw the need and responded generously. Our greatest benefactor is Rt. Rev. Msgr, Farrell, who added a large number of books during the past year and also built a generous shelving space, that will hold ever so many volumes tif we had themj. New tables and chairs will be placed in the library before school opens next fall, giving us one of the finest libraries in the state. 'Time so 01? enjoyed, so of misused! A Cathedral altar acolyte is known by his excellent training, his know' ledge of the many and varied holy ceremonies, and his reverential attitude- he is Cathedrals pride and joy. The service is voluntary and is assumed by those, who, through love for Iesus in the Blessed Sacrament, would embrace the privileged duty of serving at Holy Mass. The duties of an Acolyte are many and arduous at Cathedral but Whether it be on early Mass in bleak winter ere day has dawned or the solemn pontifical Mass in the late morning he is there promptly and attentively. Footprints on the Sands of Time WHY, this must be the River of Time and those marks are, of course, the footprints on the sands of time. I wonder, . . . would it be possible after so many years, to recognize footprints that the class of '30 C. H. S. have left behind? .... That's the adventure, and what do I love more,-save it be a lazy afternoon in August, in a shady nook beside a quiet stream, to dream about my second career,-like Conrad, I count on two at least-. I'll set out and explore the nearest prints, and if it is worth my while, I'll follow the shore until I have discovered the footprints of the fifty-one graduates from C.H.S. in the class of '30 and then, perhaps, seeing, shall take heart again. I first discern a lady's prints accompanied by smaller ones, . . . Frances Gehrer in the role of a happy mother, and I remember our Bulletin Board once said that a good mother is God's master-piece. .... Here's another pair, pausing here and there, . . . that's Catherine Heichelbech explaining in- tricate symbols in chemistry. And into the Hall of Fame I follow the steps of Doc Curtis who blazoned across the pages of Success, his marvellous dis- covery of the filterable virus which causes S. S .... I discover the rythmic steps of Freda Lies who sang her way into grand opera, and cross the path of Arline DuPree who tripped the light fantastic onto Broadway .... Here are air- plane tracksg it has just taken off and bears no others than Evelyn Sicka, C. Neville, C. Flanigan, M. Spangenberger, and M. Burtz, all on their way to do some stenographic work for a national convention in New York. They are getting a royal send-off by Ioe Gessler, President of a Corporation, and Dave Olmstead, a visiting naval officer. And who is the pilot? Yes, it's Frank Kruske, a full-fledged army officer .... Why, I can scarcely recognize these.--Ah, a lion's footprints! And just ahead the hasty prints of Roy Schoenborn's heels. Hels taken to his heels whilst pursuing his adventures in the jungles of Africa. . . . These marks seem vague. No small wonder! They also lead to South Africa and belong to Ted Moran who is making a name for himself among the natives by endeavoring to introduce his baseball team from New York, with the aid of Bob Wellman's Comet, whose powerful auto has even excelled Ford's latest Liz .... And what's this? . . . The print of a business card, bearing the name of Thomas Buser, his place of business, and his private stenographer, Miss C. Burtz. Closely associated with these two are huge elec- tric signs, bearing the names of McGreevy and McClure. Their filling stations are established directly across from each other. . . . Those flashing Neon signs indicate Fabian Bolte's ambitions to amass a fortune and retire at forty. . . . lack Healy's footprints lead to the Hall of Fame, due to his scientific ability in inventing a pair of telescopic glasses which enable Isadel Bowlus, the new rural school teacher, to see in all parts of the class-room without the necessary eye-strain. . . . There seems to be a number of deep footprints here. And to Ti me stays,-we go. l95O TH E CATH EDRAI. whom do they belong, but to Iames Toon, Iames Connor, Ioe Gittrich, Dick Stratton and Wilfred Bender, who are plodding along with the construction gang. Stay in there, fellows! lust a few more bridges and you will be expert engineers. . . . Here some tracks lead to a beauty shoppe. They are none other than those of Arthur Pfaff, who has made the world sit up and take notice of his invention of a powder which completely hides the shine of the nose. And if there isn't his old school-mate, Eileen Meeker, faithfully demonstrating. . . . Intermingled with these there seems to be quite a bit of static. But we must not get excited, it is only Harold Gatz and Lloyd Collins endeavoring to pass their radio engineering test, while at the same time Irene Simon and Gertrude Simpson are staging a radio debate on Why men leave home. Fnom station KF H comes the Daley-Fallis basketball hour, and Elizabeth Gagen's bed-time stories,- Are all the little kiddies listening? . . . What have we here? And leading to the book-rack, too,-Mary Roger's latest publication How I Tamed My Temper written under the fictitious name of And How. Her characters she has selected from real life, including Catherine Steffens, Regina Rader, Ruthelma Haden, a successful interior decorator, Florence Busch, capable busi- ness woman, and society matron, and Marie Schmitz, a well-known ukelele player in the Hawaiian Orchestra .... To the newspaper these lead :-Grace Becker, who has combined her powers as a farmerette and English student, contributing daily articles on Who are the contented cows and why? . . . In the same column appear Hildegarde Bunck's lectures on The Necessity of Handing in a Friday Theme. The tracks are ending now. But these are very conspicuous and lead to,- well what is this,-A hospital! We catch a glimpse of the operating room. Bending over a limp form on the table, is Brice Day, a scalpel and scissors in hand. Close by, dressed in white uniforms all ready for an emergency call, stand Margaret and Elsie, contemplating on how many cokes they can buy with a week's wages, while Margaret Murphy busily makes out the diet, with the aid of a book on When and What to Eat. Doctor Day is beginning to operate, . . . OH! . . . I awake with a start and rub my eyes! Could I have been dreaming? No, here is the beach and-but where are those footprints? Iust then a huge wave overwhelms me. I peer at the sand. The footprints ?- Gone! The wave has dashed them into a memory, but that memory has stamped itself upon my mind, leaving a visualization of the dreams of the class of IQ3O!
