In September, 1926, we entered the Cathedral High School. But-to our amazement-this portion of the river of life, contrary to our dreams, was beset with passes guarded by Knights and shortly we met the first, Sir Star of the Morning. He hustled and harried us and labored us till our shields were cloven. The battle was difficult for the art was new. We wrestled with grades, athletics, and other activities until we were well nigh overcome. But at last we struck a strong stroke and overcame Sir Knight. Our morning dream hath proven true. When we touched the second river loop, huge on a high, red horse and all in mail burnished to blinding was Sir Noon-day Sun guarding the pass. But steady endurance brought scholarship, athletics, and the title, Miss Cathedral, to our ranks. Thus we unhorsed our Second Adversary. Cheerfully we pressed on determined to vanquish Sir Star of the Evening, who was old and hard and clung to the post of the third loop with tenacity. But the same strength which threw Sir Morning Star and Sir Noon-day Sun can throw the Evening Star. Albeit-the struggle was hard, for greater skill was required in scholarship, athletics and contests, and at times, we seemed to strike vainly. At length we broke Sir Star of the Evening's sword to the hilt and rode safely on-obtained good grades, better places on the football and basketball teams, and again annexed the title of Miss Cathedral . We pro- duced a two-act comedy, The Rebellion of Youth , and from its proceeds made the first payment on our purple velvet drop. We debated with other schools and acquired knowledge and experience. The goal was now in sight and dreams of a goodly year stretched ahead. We assumed the triumphant look of victors and with all the devisings of chivalry, when one might meet a mightier than himself, we dashed against Sir Night, who guarded the entrance to the Castle Perilous-and won. We edited one of Cathedral's most beautiful annuals, had a glorious season of basketball, entered a play in the one-act play contest at Marion, and competed in the Every Student Scholarship Contest in Rhetoric and Literature from the College of Emporia. Robin Hoodw by Alfred Noyes was the year-end play, our outstanding achievement, the reorganization of the Sodalityg a notable event, the retreat by Rev. Donnelly, S.I. Gloriously we marched into the castle and received from the Lady of High Lineage with white hands and queenly courtesy the newly won accolade, vibrant as steel, glorious as the sun. Then in the wide flush of dawn we marched away in quest of higher glory. l I x PAGE TW ENTY zi.s..,-., ' 'C athedrab To The Seniors When you are old, and even you must change, And be no longer debonair and young, When you have hund that many jbllqs are strange Ana' not like those that you notv live among When you are old and grey and all alone, And no guests come because of stormy weather, Recall, then, the pals of twenty-nine That time and place no longer bring together A nd so remembering friends of this year, A nd days that swiftly passed, full free from care, Let Cathedral appear-as los? things appear Now lovely and beufilderingly more fair Than any other place you knew your whole life through To bring you disillusion in the end all over, And in that hour may you not forget that you By Cathedral are remembered year on year. 1 I l if ,S , LAW, ,, I , 1 v ..5 M .,.nw.,, A' -.-., . . 'qffg 'Qu I, HK, J 53 Qtr Combat I know thee for my King 5 The castle of the Grail in the City Peerless was without king. The great monarch charged one whom he loved and honored most to come to the Peerless City. The ruler came. And many loyal subjects greeted him and rejoiced, as he, at the monarch's bidding, donned the regal purple and assumed the title, King. From the high towers of the Grail the bells rang out and subjects came from far and near to worship. The king, when he saw these things, was passing glad. But the youth of the kingdom were growing dull and discontented. They heard of the great learning of other youth in other lands and wondered why they, too, could not seek great knowledge. - The king pondered long on this new thought and at last commanded his older knights to erect for his youth a vast building of dazzling white stone and he bade great scribes and pedagogues to come from other countries to lead the quest for knowledge. The King noticed then, as the people passed to and from the temple of the Grail, how much happier his youthful subjects were and his heart grew warm for them and they were grateful to their much-loved King. But the squires and pages longed for knighthood and petitioned the king to build for them an indoor spacious court wherein they might test their manly strength. The king addressed himself again to deep meditation, with the result that his counsellors were given permission to plan a great tourney hall. It was not long then, till the youth had perfected their skill in the various arts of knighthood and the king invited the rulers of other lands to send their aspiring youth to combat with those of the Peerless City. The invitations were accepted and many were the battles fought and won in the great hall, and praises of the knights were heralded on all sides. The walls were hung with trophies which the knights who helped to win them loved to look upon. How the young knights loved their king and how eager they were to fulfill his boundless purpose! At last the year 1929 dawned bright and clear. The young warriors were the pride of the country-side for their beauty of manhood and for their strength and skill. They marched out to do battle for their king, and by their prowess, add to the number of trophies brought by older knights. They won many victories, their defeats served only to show their mettle-accepting them like true knights who know how to recognize a mightier than themselves-yet fighting bravely on to the last stroke. The year of chivalry was to end with a great joust on a foreign court. The King called the gold and green players to him and sent them out to try their powers on the warring fields of other lands. Eagerly they entered the lists-valiantly they fought. And those who parried against them knew the power of a valiant'foe. The joust was spec- tacular and the knights returned with swinging swords and victor step to place at the feet of their King the honors they had won. And the King reigned happy in his realm seeing that his warriors were victors in his favorite pastime. Qi 1 ,J 4, j, , ,lj Ml yllml ,...:., . f nc: FoR'rY -..Wa -me... -gg'1'Z.:i. . He came to us highly recommended, and in this, his first year as coach at Cathedral High School, has fulfilled our highest expectations. In his college days at Fairmount, he was termed the best all-round athlete in the history of the school, and was selected as a member of the Fairmount Honor F ive . Mr. Miller took up the duties of football coach at Cathedral High School with a sad lack of material, but by the end of the season, had developed a bunch of speedy fighters. His basketball team had a most successful season, and no little credit is due him e is W l liked b everyone. May success be his! 1' pr.. 1 Review of Athleticsf' .N review of Cathedrals athletic aetivif ties may be made with a feeling of satis- faction. The struggle for permanent posi- tions on the teams was carried on evenly and every man worked as though the suc- cess of the season depended upon his per- sonal elliorts. Evidence ol' good coaching was shown by every team and Mr. Miller deserves a full share of praise for his achievements. The football season could not be called a success so far as wins and losses were considered, but the squad worked hard and developed a team which made its op- ponents work for what they made. The basketball season opened with brighter aspects. Seventeen straight wins s 9l9 from first-class teams is the story of bas- ketball in a nutshell--a record never sur- passed by any team at C.H.S. Handball and Tennis only get started as the Annual goes to press. Prospects for Tennis are bright both for the boys and the girls. A place among the lettermen is an honor coveted by the members of the foot- ball and basketball teams. It is considered a great privilege to be a wearer of the large The requirements for earning the letter not only vary with the different sports, but they are dependent upon the sportsmanship of the individual. The King, radiant with pride and joy, beamed on his knights. But were there no other fields that the tireless feet of youth might traverse to quest for glory? The King gave himself to deep contemplation, and forthwith, sending far and wide, had brought to him a great dramatic teacher. This teacher, though young in years, early proved her great ability and won for her- self the love of the students and their heartfelt co-operation. She drilled them in the necessary rudiments of speech and action, and presented plays which were praised by all who saw them. Then a renowned singing teacher came to the kingdom and told the King that every school should have vocal training, as well as any other, so, with the King's consent, a chorus was formed, that charmed the people with its beautiful harmony. And the King was praised for his latest innovation. But this was not all. Not content with these great accomplishments, the King or- ganized an orchestra, which, though very young in Cathedral activities, proved its ability to entertain. The Cathedral was published, then, for the Seniors, who would leave forever the protecting walls of the kingdom to combat on the wider fields of life. lt put to use the knowledge gained in the years of study and formed a treasured memory of their happy life at school. And then-in a far off kingdom a great monk was banding together the young people into societies, which were taught the great glory of God and how to worship Him. The King, hearing of this, sent a messenger to him, asking for an ambassador to come and teach the youth of his own kingdom. The ambassador came and for three wonderful days held a retreat. He told the students of God's great love and mercy, and how He wanted their love in return. When he left, a greater interest was taken in things spiritual. The Students' Spiritual Council gained impetus among the girls, and interest burned brightly in the various activities undertaken. The Guard of Honor, organized to attend Holy Hour on the nights before every First Friday of the month, was faithfully observed, and on Sodality Sundays the long line of Sodalists that entered the Castle of the Grail was a glowing tribute to Our Lady, who was the noble urge. The slogan, parody, and poster contests kept the Publicity Committee busy until everyone came to regard the S.S.C's. as a permanent and necessary organization. So at last, when the youth had grown in intellectual achievement, physical perfec- tion, and spiritual beauty, the King blessed them and sent them into the world feeling in his heart that he had equipped them magnificently for the glorious battles he knew they would win. ,ji i 'l F3 e 192.9 I -fel. r'f'f..., 3 I 1 A 'Tin ,ii V I Wm wg. .e-1 3 1 ,-.J ff. wr' -rii 'll l PAGE Flrfv-'rwo i N. According to the plan of that great leader of Catholic youth, Rev. Daniel Lord, S.l., the Sodality was reorganized with the Students' Spiritual Council, which func- tioned under the direction of five committees. It was the privilege of Our Lady's Com- mittee to keep ever fresh in the hearts of the Sodalists the memory of her feasts. The ten liv- ing rosaries during the month of October formed a glowing tribute from her loving clients. Programs were given in her honor. Songs were written in her name. Under the auspices of the Social Commit- tee the Sodalists realized a dream of marvelous import. The adoption of a poor family at Christmas time brought more joy, perhaps, to the donors than to the recipients. The Social Committee also brought the devotees of Mary to realize that souls in pagan lands are dear to the heart of her Son. The Eucharistic Committee found every LUCILLE HAN1.oN, Prefeft Sodalist ready and eager to enlist as a volunteer for the Guard of Honor formed the First Friday of every month. Mass attendance was increased and frequent reception of Our Lord in the Sacrament of His Love was en- couraged. The Catholic Literature Committee won the co-operation of every Sodalist in placing on the shelves of the growing library some fifty books-both fiction and non-fiction. The Voice of the Sodality, the spiritual bulletin board, was operated through the Publicity Committee. From the bulletin board were directed the parody, poster, and slogan contests which drew every Sodalist into the spirit of this great organization. Glenda Melcher.
