Hatha ffwliftlg Senior Class History Here's a royal toast to the Senior Class of '28 that has completed a four-year course, teeming with work, replete with activity, and abounding in social affairs. Soon we will be leaving our beloved Cathedral, some to embark on the ship of life, others to continue to improve their education. Some of us may be de- prived of the privilege ever again to return to view the campus we know so well and to renew acquaintances and friendships made in previous years. It is cer- tain that none of us will ever forget the pleasant years we have spent within the walls of dear old C.H.S. The years have passed rapidly, so rapidly in fact, that it seems only a few weeks ago that we made our first appearance, filled with anticipation and with a certain amount of awe for the upper-classmen. Here's to the green little Freshies we were in the year of '24, when timidly we sought out the methods of conquering the difficulties which presented them- selves to us as Cathedral students. Those social events which impress us most deeply in the Freshman year are three pleasant class parties. a happy evening at the Easter Monday dance, and the honor of assisting with the Cathedral Annual of '25. Officers elected were the following: Catherine Ellis and Celestine Stein, Presidents, John McNeill, Vice-Presidentg Cecilia Patry, Secretary, and Cecil Kane, Treasurer. To the leadership of these young men and women is due much credit for the manner in which they led their classes. As Freshmen we con- tributed much talent to the athletic section. Much praise is due these girls and boliis who worked so diligently and successfully for Cathedral in the field of at etics. Here's to the Sophomores of '26 who entered into the Spirit of C.H.S. In an earnest and sincere manner, they shouldered their responsibilities and partic- ipated in school activities to a degree unexcelled. During the Sophomore year, the boys followed eagerly the progress of the new Boys, Department. By De- cember 1, 1925, the structure was completed and we boys resumed our classes in the novel atmosphere of modern classrooms. But in June '26, a very unpleasant surprise came to us. Brother Ignatius told us in our last assembly of the year, that the Xaverian Brothers would not return to Cathedral in September. This put us in a quandary. We feared we should be left adrift in mid-ocean without experienced navigators. But our fears were soon quelled by the news that the Brothers of Mary would carry on the battle against Ignorance in our Cathedral school. Catherine Ellis, Cecil Kane, John McNeill, Marjorie Kennedy, and Celes- tine Stein held offices during this year. Here's to the Juniors who nobly surmounted the difficulties of the first two years, to blossom forth in the third period of their educational growth as a class disposed to achieving worth-while things in preparation for life. Brother Charles Maier took up the task of furthering education and development. The class earn- estly worked on the glorious Halloween Dance and the Junior-Senior banquet, both of which proved to be overwhelmingly successful. Surpassing even these accomplishments was a new and more spirited interest in our studies. The of- ficers were: Lucille VVeigand and Cecil Kane, presidents, Catherine Ellis and Charles Hartman, vice-presidents, Mary Jane Figgemeier and Bernard Glass, sec- retariesg Mary Jane Figgemeier and Celestine Stein, treasurers. Here's to the Senior of 1928 who, realizing the responsibilities of being Sen- iors, set out to surpass all records established by previous Cathedral graduating classes. Brother Francis Wohlleben proved to be a very capable pilot in steering our bark safely through those hazardous ten months. The September elections resulted in the following: Catherine Ellis and Cecil Kane, presidents, Lucille Weigand and Charles DeVoge, vice-presidents: Evelyn Hawks and John McNeill, secretaries, Reina Ellis and Celestine Stein, treasurers. Following the elections, a joint meeting of Senior girls and boys was held, at which class rings and pins were decided upon. In anuary work was begun on the Annualg the theme chosen was The Cup of Life . The Annual Sale Contest resulted in Eugene Hart- man, Senior, being chosen The Annual Boy. Outstanding events of the year were a party at the home of Miss Catherine Ellis, the play A Flower of Yeddo, presented by the Senior girls, and a Valentine party given by the Seniors to the Juniors. And now it remains but to write the word Finis to our high school career. As we leave the portals of our Alma Mater to fight alone the battles of life, we gratefully acknowledge the untiring efforts and devoted zeal of our teachers. Here's a right royal toast to our teachers whose principles and example will be our guiding stars as we journey through life. .Missa 1 Q 2 S ewseaarwf-f Z 's51t1br'?:,.' ELLIS HCURLYU CUMMINGS xVll0Il the athletic season opens at Cathedral High School next fall, Curly Cummings, former Southwestern star, will be absent. For the past four years, Curly has been coaching the Micks. l'nder his guidance, athletics have taken enormous strides. His football and basketball teams have ranked with the best in the state of Kansas. In the last three years Curly's gridders have won 18 games out of 24. In basketball his success was equally sensational. During the four years he has coached at Cathedral, l1is basketeers have won 63 games and lost only 20. They have been State Champions for three successive years, and two years ago won third place in the National Catholic Tournalnent held in Chicago. It was largely, if not wholly, due to the untiring efforts of Mr. Cummings that the Girls' State and National Tournaments were held in Wichita last year. Need- less to say, both were successes. lf it had not been for opposition that developed against tournaments for girls, Cathedral would again have been host to the feminine eagersi' this year. Coach Cummings will be succeeded at Cathedral by Squat Miller, former Fairmount lTniversity star. llere's to Ellis Curly Cummings, Catheclral's first coach. May success crown his efforts in whatever field of activity the future will find him. PAGE THIRTY-SIX .r'7 ff rt. Qillf- 75511-sl!Ufzifltlftitlt 1 .v, Q H5525 L Football ..,,,. HHllllIll'Illf, Mall. llllllullfl A, x Fabiola, a drama in four acts, founded on Cardinal XViSl'Ill2lll,S story, was chosen as the year-end vehicle for the Senior and Junior Girls' play. The scenes are laid in Home during the reign of the Emperor Dioeletian about the year 304 A. D. Fahiola, an arrogant creature of the imperial court, is converted to the faith only after Sebastian, captain of the Praetorian Guards, sacrifices his life for the holy cause. Both in acting and costuming the play was admirably done. Thus was an interesting and successful year culminated for the Cathedral High School Effective Speaking Classes. The effective-speaking classes of Cathedral High School enjoyed an unusually aetive and successful year. For the latter, the students are indebted to Miss Frances Weigand, direetress of dramaticsg commendation should be made to one who has sacrificed much and made great effort to do things for Cathedral High School. The Seniors opened the year's program with the presentation of A FLOVVEH OF YEDDO , a Japanese comedy, to honor the twenty-second anniversary of Rt. ltev. Monsignor Farrell's ordination to the priesthood. This play was entered in a contest of one-act plays at Manhattan in April and was accorded second place. Before school closed for the Christmas holidays, the Freshmen appeared in a one-act play, THE BUHGLAR and delighted and surprised the audience with their clever presentation. After the holiday season, there was a lull in dramatics until the Juniors gave a two-act drama, THE REBELLION OF YOUTH . Its professional precision called for a second rendition on March the seventeenth. The play became pop- ular and the cast journeyed to Arkansas City where it was staged the third time. The Sophomores in SEVEN T0 0NE Aportrayed vividly a scene from college life. This was presented a week later at Peabody in a one-act play contest. The Juniors who did not have a part in the Rebellion of Youth gave THE KI,EPTOMANIAC , a comedy that was well received by the student-body. The annual spring play, FABl0I.A , chosen for its lofty theme, exquisite lines and beautiful setting, was staged on May the fourth. lt was enthusiastically received and was a fitting close for the year's work in dramatics. Our only sorrow is that the number of days are rather curtailed, owing to the enforced free days of the epidemic in the early part of the year. Wichita High and Cathedral engage in a city-championship basketball con- test. Honor to whom honor is due! Wichita High outplayed us to the score of 41-23. The annual Boys' Alumni Basketball game. The old stars were all there with their tricks. C.H.S. contested every play and finally let the score stand in favor of C.H.S., and thereby hangs a ball! Score 34-35. JANUARY We resume our studies, mindful of the good New Year's resolutions we've made. The Staff for the Cathedral Annual is selected and we begin to solicit ads. C.H.S. inaugurates the opening of the newly organized Cottonwood Valley League by taking a hotly contested game from our visitors, Marion High, by a score of 28 to 18. We win our second game in the new league by defeating Florence on their home court. Score 38 to 16. The Sophomore girls debate. Eureka High visited our court to be trounced to the tune of 37 to 15. The C.H.S. Girls went off on a real trip to Lawton, Oklahoma, where they played the Lawton Lassies, the National Champs of '27. Augusta outclassed our basketeers on their own court by a score of 31 to 20. Our lads were not accustomed to the very small court. Peabody came to Wichita to contend for basket-honors, but dropped the game to Cathedral by a score of 27 to 18. Hillsboro travelled to Wichita only to receive a severe walloping from the Micks in a 67 to 13 count. C.H.S. met Chase County in a debate. Decision went to the visitors. This game placed Peabody and Cathedral in a tie position for first place in the league. C.H.S. with their first team on the sick list, betook themselves to Hillsboro and lost the contest in a 17-10 count. The Junior Girls presented The Rebellion of Youth. A full house and a great success. Sedgwick High lost to the Micks by a score of 20-7. The Irish from The Air Capital journeyed to Eureka with practically a new line-up and defeated Eureka.
