VVith mingled feelings of regret and joy do I say it,' of regret that you are about to leave us, and of joy that you have so successfully served your ap- prenticeship within the walls of the Cathedral High School. We shall miss you much. Your departure, however, will not sever the pleasant relations that have bound you so closely with us during your many years of study. An everlasting dwelling place shall be yours within o11r hearts and minds. May those Christian lessons you have learned from your consecrated teachers be your guiding star through life. May their wise counsels and good example strength- en you to fight courageously life's difficult battles. Your sorrows will be their sorrows, your triumphs likewise will be the1'rs. May the light of the good life you will lead shed its pure rays upon your Alma Mater to lzlazen the way for those who will follow you. lmf2e.u,9444i4. ' The Faculty -10- rnxe Faculty .gu- illumination of Books A ck -,kg NE cannot enter a book- ?--- as 'il shop today without real- izing how many thousand L,'4 ff books are in circulation. Y,.,,iif,5 There was an age how- li3 ' ' ever, when books were laboriously written, instead of being thus quickly manufactured by the ai of the type-setting machine. And the il- lustrations, instead of being easily re- produced by photographic processes, were veritable miniature paintings, most decorative, ablaze with colour and fine gold. In these times it is easy to forget that there ever was a period when the making of a single book occupied years and sometimes the lifetime of one or two men. There are many arts and crafts which come under daily observation that make no impression on us and have no message for us, simply be- cause we have never considered the subject of their origin and construc- tion. It is only after one has once studied the subject of historic carving, metal work, embroidery, tapestry, or illumination, that one can ever look upon these things with intelligent in- terest and vastly increased pleasure. The staff of the Cathedral Annual 1927, in casting about for a theme came upon one linked most closely not only with learning but Catholicity itselfg for the transcription of books was one of the chief occupations in religious houses and the recluse monk, in t e quiet of the scriptorium, was in spite of his seclusion, and indeed, by reason of it. the chief link between the world of letters and the world of men. We have enjoyed the research work entailed in bringing only a touch of old-world book-ma ing craft to our Cathedral Annual and, if the subject awakens any little interest in our readers, we shall feel even more richly repaid. Many different arts were represent- ed in the making of a mediaeval book. Of those employed, first came the scribe, whose duty it was to form the black, even, glossy letters with his peng then came t e painter, who must not only be a correct draughtsman, and an adept with his pencil and brush, but must also understand how to pre- pare mordants and to lay on the gold leaf, and to burnish it afterwards. After him, the binder gathered the lustrous pages and put them together under silver-mounted covers, with heavy clasps. The large hall or studio in which the work on the books was accom- plished was called the scriptorium. When the scriptorium was consecrat- ed these words were used: Vouch- safe, 0 Lord, to bless this workroom of thy servants, that all which they write therein may be comprehended by their intelligence, and realized by their work. The work of each scriptorium was devoted first to the library of the individual monastery and after that, to other houses, or to such patrons as were rich enough to order books to be transcribed for their own use. One of the most important monas- teries of early times, on the Conti- nent, was that conducted by Alcuin, under the protection of Charlemagne. When the appointed time came for writing, the monks filed into the scriptorium, taking their places at their desks. One of their number then stood in the midst, and read aloud, slowly, for dictation, the work upon which they were engaged as copyistsg in this way a score of copies could be made at once. Alcuin him- self would pass among them, making suggestions and correcting errors, a beautiful example of true consecra- tion, the great scholar spending his time thus in supervisirrf, the transcrip- tion of the word of Go , from a desire to have it spread far and wide. With the introduction of printing, the art of illuminating was doomed. The personal message from the scribe to the reader was merged in the more comprehensive message of the press to the public. The printing press stands for all that is progressive and desirable, modern thought and life hang upon this discovery. But in this glorious new birth there was sacrified a certain indescribable charm which can never be felt now except by a book lover as he turns the leaves of an ancient illuminated book. To him it is given to understand that pathetic appeal across the centuries. Your future calls You into the swirl of cities and of men, You will not come this way again. You touch my hand and speak sweet, awkward words Of thanks and parting. You will remember me As long as singing birds and stars shall been And yetf You will forget. l watch you go! I, who have trembled for you, hoped, rejoiced, And stretched a careful finger forth to guide you. Your soul is a clean, white book whose pages glow Scarlet and gold and blueee-I shall not know The ending of tl1c story therein voiced. Your soul is a fragile moth with pale gold wings, New-broken from its ehrysalis: it clings Vibrant upon youth's stemg I shall not see The beauty of your flight, radiant and free. Your soul is a delicate plant I have watched unfolding Green leaf by clear green leaf, But you will flower far from any beholding, So frail remembrance is, so rare, so brief. The Micks completely ffjh, in Cathedral High School outclassed most of their opponents ffyf during the past three due, no doubt, to their superior weight jg fag, ' years has been little short and fighting alnhty. Cljl W. ol' s e n sa t i o n al. Pour l'he last game oi the season, lll l 'l' 'NS' years ago, Cathedral High which Lathedral swamped klllgllltlll School was the Athletic practically unknown in World, while to-day it IS one ol' the strongest athletic schools ol' Kansas. Starting with foothall, three years ago, Cathedral began to develop blg- gel' and hetter teams each year, until the past year when Cathedral pro- duced one of the best teams in the State. This year's football aggregation, under the direction ol' Coach 'tCurly tlmmnings, had a very suceesstul sea- son, scoring 128 points against their opponents' thirty-one, and losing but two games during the entire season to such rivals as lloe Institute and Marion lligh School by a large margin, was a great surprise to everybody interested in football. ll was in this game that Cathedral lligh School made a most impressive hid l'or State honors. The record is all the mogre -remarkable when it is known that Coach Curly Cummings has a comparatively small school to deal with, with never more than one hundred and twenty hoys from which to select his athletes. 'l'he fans and the student-body ol' Cathedral hope to he able to 1'ead glowing accounts in the next few years, of many Cathedral lligh School athletes- starring on teams ol' our leading llniversitics. HIE squad in good shape to f',f'l1 make another bid for the state title left by auto March ll, for St. Mary's, 'fad Kansas, where the state .J meet for Catholic high schools was held. ln the pairings, Cathedral drew as an opponent, the St. Francis High School of St. Paul, Kansas. Towering heads above their diminutive oppon- ents both in stature and basketball ability, Cathedral High rode rough shod over St. Paul High. Myers and .l. Bausch were the main cogs in the Cathedral offense,-Myers hitting ten and .l. Bausch eight from the floor. The feature game of the tournament was ll1e semi-l'inal tilt between St. Mary's and Cathedral. The Cathedral team did itself proud by the ability displayed in this game. Wichita downed St. Mary's, 23-15, fi fhting every minute of the game anii dis- playing a class of ball that St. Mary's could neither cope with nor success- l'uIly stop. The superb defense of the champs functioned so well that St. Mary's was unable to penetrate it. The game was a fight from start to finish and there was no let-down on either side. There are no words than can describe the game. It was the decid- ing game of the tournament. The t'inal game played with Hays was an easy game, Cathedral swamp- ing llays, 40-12. The Wichita husky hasketeers again carried away most of the trophies in the stale meet. ln addition to the large trophies, each member was given a gold emblem. Captain Tommy Myers was the unanimous choice of the eoaches as the most valuable player in the tournament. Ile was high scorer ol' the tourney, counting 46 points in three games. and in addition he gave an exhibition of floor and defensive work that marked him the class of the meet. lle was further honored with the captaincy of the All-Star team of the tournament. .I. Bausch and F. Bausch also fained places on the All- Star team. By virtue of Cathedral's third consecutive victory in the State Tourney, the team gained not only permanent possession of the Bishop Tief's trophy and first place cup but last and not least the right to represent the state of Kansas in the National Catholic interscholastic tourney held in Chicago. The National Tourney opened at Loyola University gymnasium March 17 with thirty-two teams entered from all sections of the United States. ln the first round of the tourney, Cathedral defeated the spirited little I'ive t'rom St. Peter's High, New Bruns- wick, N. .l., in as fast and hard fought a game as has been seen there. On Friday, the Cathedral team scored a 19-11 triumph in its second round en- counter over Central Catholic High School ol' Johnstown, Pa. The C.l'l.S. boys were closely pressed throughout tl1e contest. The half ended 10 to 10 deadlock, but the Cathedral High cag- ers came back in the second half to take the lead and in the closin f min- utes sank three baskets in quicik suc- cession to snatch decisive victory. I Tl1e Kansas quintet was eliminated 111 thc third-round encounter when they played Holy ltosary High School, Syracuse, N. Y. The Wichita team was undoubtedly weakened by the retire- ment near the close of the first half of Schwenker and F. Bausch. In the second half the C.l'l.S. boys fought furiously to recover. A belated rally at the close of the contest failed to snatch victory from the pace-setting New Yorkers. All things considered, the Cathe- dral boys made a good showing in the National Tournament. The fans and C.H.S students at home were sorry that the boys did not win, but felt certain that they had played a good clean fight, to the last minute of the game. The brief story of the tourneys, state and national, would be incomplete were the name of Mr. Cummings omit- ted. The season at Cathedral High will not only go down into history as the greatest here, but as a fine per- sonal tribute to Coach Cunnnings who labored faithfully and welded together a machine that humbled many of its opponents during the season. And the last chapter in the book of athletics cannot be closed without mentioning the name of Rt. Rev. Mon- signor Farrell. His faith in the play- ers is the spirit that broods over the teams, and for that faith there is no athlete at C.H.S. that would not play up and play the game to the very best within him. Summary of Season E are transcribing a rec- ord of thc most distinc- ', V , tive girls' basketball sea- ' Q son ever known to C.H.S. Q3 is It is enviable! The 1927 -fly Basketball Sextctte proved to be the best team ever produced by the school. lt lost but one game in eleven, won third place in the State meet and received the honor of an in- vitation to enter the National Tourn- ament. The team selected to carry Cathe- dral's pennant consisted of the two basket-shooting aces, Margaret New- man and Mae Ceurvorst, with our meek captain, Elva Frankenberg as jumping center, and a fighting little piece of humanity in the person of Marie Hartman as running center. On the defense we had Caddie Ellis, who was on the job of overhauling the opponent's forward, and Path Patry, a new guard, who proved an aggres- sive player who was in therev for all her worth from the opening whistle 'till the final toot. VVith this combina- tion in the flock, the t'bluebirds started on their journey. Our Baskcteers niet and defeated some of the strongest state teams. They encountered thrilling games with Benton, Haven, Caldwell and Wallenstein-Raffman and will remem- her them as games in which they had to show their composition. So it was they found a safe place at the season's close. The blnebirds remained in train- ing so they might fly high in the State meet. As a result they took third place and brought to the nest the beautiful trophy, the first treasure won by a C.l-LS. girls' basketball team. The principal event of the season was the National Tournament spon- sored by C.H.S,, with thc scxtette acting as hostess. This being the climax in the basketball circle, we express our gratitude to the six little bluebirds who fought so gallantly against the winds of defeat in what has been pronounced by the of- ficials as one of the lIl0St interesting games ot' the tourney-the Caldwell- Cathedral round. That the final whistle found our Bluebirds at the small end of the score, does not de- tract from the fine standard set for future C.H.S. champions. Coach Cummings, Constellation Flite Honor of the Playing Field fgwi., ANY of the great lessons of .L WSL! QL, lil'e come from the games 3 F we play in youth. The first consideration in all i-if-f?-3-l' games is to lay the foun- , . dation for a full and splendid manhood and womanhood. We should keep, as one of the mottoes of our outdoor life, the thought that a noble mind lives in a noble body. We should play a garlic for its own sake, never spoiling the spirit of all true games, nor lowering the dignity of all true manhood, by playing it for prol'it, at the expense ol' somebody else. Our gullies are our own lessons in noble things. The playing field is in truth the High School of life. lt is there we find the great distinctive qualities that mark the men of the linglish-speaking race all over the world. No American boy can be healthy and whole and miss the laws of honor. They ring through every school that is worth the stuff it is built of, they are blazoned as in letters of fire over every playing field worth walking on. They are among the old- est things i11 the world, and they will last as long as the human race. We must think of the game and not of ourselves. That game is lost in which one member of the team seeks his own glory. The unity of all for a single cause, each playing his part I'or the general end, is the condition without which no game is won. Chiv- alry, the surrender of self, obedience to the law that holds the team together -these things grow naturally with every game we play, and we should cherish them as a part of ourselves. We should be staunch and loyal and trueg our comrades must be able to rely on us, Especially should we be good los- ers, we should yield the palm with -A4 UW.. grace and cheerfulness to a victor who has played the game, leaving haggling, grudging, and quarreling to meaner souls, and not spoiling the temper of a game by elaiming doubtful points or insisting on little rights. We must not strain the rules of a game so that the keeping of them breaks the spirit of themg we should be willing rather to lose a thousand games than win one by the shadow of unfairness. When the time comes, as it comes in all games, when nobody could see if your play were unfair, you will be glad to know that your loyalty is above suspicion, and will do the right thing as quickly as a lightning flash. The sad side of human life, made up of cunning and intrigue, of seeking selfish ends at any costs to others, of preferring our vain-glory rather than the achievement of a common good, of shutting our hearts to the troubles of others so long as we are prospering has no encouragement on the playing field where only the flower of life, and not the weed, can grow. We must be loyal, or the game is lost. VVe could never be mean enough to withhold the applause that belongs rightly to the victor. The life of the world itself calls for those qualities in us which spring f1'om the holding together of the team. lf we hold together in the nation as we hold together in the team, in the boat race, in the tug-of-war, we shall give back to the nation a hundredfold the talents entrusted to us. Thus there grows up in us with our play that part of our life which makes the dif- ference, as the years go by, between the men who help a nation on and the men who pull it back. If we are loyal to our team, to our school, we shall be loyal to our town and to our country. The very beginnings of patriotism lie in our games. . .I Public-Speaking Class TOP ROWV: M. Miss Weigand had in former years unselfishly prof- t'ered her able assistance in coaching the production of the annual plays, l'ontia,' and 'tThe Lamp and The Bell. Mechanical Jane, a clever one-act comedy was presented by the Seniors. The parts of Priscilla and Tabitha were taken by Dorothy Jones and Ini- elda Card. Mae Ceurvorst portrayed the Mechanical .lane. The play is the story of two maiden ladies in the lhroes of the servant problem. Pris- cilla secs an advertisement l'or a mech- anical Jaue. She buys it, and the fig- ure's actions, when it arrives, are so startling that when the mechanism runs down, the spinsters decide not to wind it up again. The .luniors displayed startling pos- sibilities and indicated who might be stars for the Junior-Senior Play of '28, a victim of their pranksfonly to find when the fun is at its highest that the little lady is the new member of the faculty. The performance was given at a l'arewell assembly for the Seniors. The Freshman Class gave its first public exhibition of dramatic ability on March seventeenth. when it pre- sented Thy Kingdom Come, a beauti- ful religious drama in three acts. The cast included the entire class of Fresh- man girls. The animal Junior-Senior play. Palricia,', was the culmination of a successful year of work and study. lt was given on May sixth to a large and appreciative audience. The cast of Patricia was headed by Katherine Tobin as Flavia, a pagang and Adeline Sieg as Patricia, a Christian. The scenes were placed in the period of St. Cecilia and the theme centered around the persecution of the Chris- tians at Home under the Emperor, Marcus Aurelius. 1 1 l Iwi l l 3 l --.41... The former motherhouse that stood on the same spot was burned to the ground some fourteen years ago on a Sunday afternoon in September and from its smolder- ing ruins arose the greater Mt. St. Mary's. Heroically, indeed, did Mother Aloysia begin the re- building,' for funds were low and the community, then few in number, was struggling under a heavy debt. But Mother ivith far-seeing eye beheld the noble procession of young girls who would come seeking admission to cloistral walls that they might be fashioned to carry on the work of Catho- lic education within the diocese of Wichita. Time has revealed this noble, self-sacrificing woman made no mistake, for in the years that have come and gone since the dedication of this temple of learning and religion, several hundred women have come to live in this atmos- phere laden with the perfume of Christ. And after a train- ing that leads to both mental and moral beauty, they have gone forth to various schools to perform the sublimest of functions-the teaching of youth. Rev. Mother Aloysia has served two terms 1'n the capac- ity of superior-general of the Sisters of St. Joseph. By her lofty z'deals and generous spirit she has been the inspiration of all who have come to dwell within the portals of Mt. St. Mary's. Her administration has been marlced by progress. Under her personal supervision, eight hospitals have been built and in at least twenty-four schools are her Sisters found---all this within the limited confines of the diocese of Wichita. Gentle-mannered, she bids the young girl welcome. Gentle-voiced, she directs her. Gentle-handed, she leads a consecrated nun to the classroom. And then within the quiet of the convent chapel, she prays that the sister-teacher may keep the fairer vision as she daily teaches the eternal lessons of the Good and the True. Koclaks -456-..
