As she blooms in the garden of life, Close hy the pathway of human feet, In a world of toil and strife. And her sweetness she gives to each passer-by Till the summer has fled and the rose must die She is only a rose but her radiant soul Blooms in a world above Where nothing is known of toil or strife For it is a world of love. And each new day, ,neath a sun-kissed sky, May she gladden the hearts of the passers-liy. She is only a rose, but many the heart She has cheered on its weary way, When the clouds hung low and the skies grew dark, With the gloom of earth's fading day. But again she blooms, in the World most high, For her soul is the rose that can never die! The Class of '56 ..-,.....4.... Again this year we have turned out several editions of the MSpotlite.7' On November 10 the two sodalities jointly sponsored Tag Day, at which a comedy under the direction of Edward Whalen was presented and highly enjoyed. During the season, the annual Christmas party was held. At this time the Sodalists donated gifts for the poor and aged. ln January the Sodality Prom, with the theme Sno-Ball, was held with music provided by the nFour Sharpsf' The Lenten project of providing breakfast after Mass was renewed again this year. Both the boys and girls had a Communion breakfast. The boys began the project of selling candy to raise money for Propagation of the Faith. The girls tried something new this year by way of a closed retreat held at Mount Saint Mary's on April 4, 5, 6. On March 23. many of the sophomores were received as new Sodalists. The year came to a climax with the Living Rosary and crowning of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Cathedral on May 10. Zaye' ' 'touted Four girls and seven boys of the class of '56 were selected as C.H.S. delegates to the 1955 Green Mountain Girls' and Boys' States respectively. The annual session of Girls' State convened at Vermont Junior College in Montpelier, Vermont, and that of Boys' State at Norwich University, Northfield, Vermont. Here we were given the opportunity of viewing first-hand the vital functions of our state and municipal governments. We learned of the state election system through petitioning, campaign- ing and voting. One of the delegates from C.HiS. was chosen one of the two state delegates to Boys, Nation in Washington, D.C. We wish to extend our heartfelt thanks to the American Legion and the other organizations which sponsored us in this unforgettable experience. A sparkling and talented group of boys and girls inaugurated our musical year by their faithful attendance at the rehearsals of the summer Junior Band under the guidance of Dr. Lechnyr. These students successfully filled the vacancies in the regular school band and were equipped with the new uniforms so generously given by the Fathers' and Mothers' Clubs. The fact that all the hard work of the musicians was worthwhile was clearly demonstrated in the splendid performance given by the band at the annual Variety Show. Of course, we must not forget one of the hardest working groups, the majorettes, who have given C.H.S. so much prestige by their precision per- formances with the band. This remarkable group is composed of Sally Van Sleet, Janet Limoge, Lois Crady, Sandra Sinclair, Anita Handy, Eliza- beth Daley, Pauline McCarthy, Maureen Barber, Claire Paris, Janet Dion, Rita Michaud. Two of the most important honors bestowed in the course of the year were those of majorette captain and drum major to Sally Van Sleet and Patrick Ravey respectively. The thrilling climax of many months of hard work for the band and the glee clubs came when Dr. Lechnyr again took up his baton to direct the traditional spring concert in a perfectly executed musical rendition of works by such great composers as Perosi, Mozart, Sibelius, Strauss, Bach, Sousa, and Leroy Anderson. Certainly, none were prouder than those who repre- sented the school glee club and band at the 1956 Vermont Music Festival. There, individual talents were blended to produce harmonious memories never to be forgotten. Music at C.H.S. has provided us with a cultural tie which serves to re-echo these words spoken by Wagner many years ago: HThe language of tones belongs equally to all mankind, and melody is the absolute language in which the musician speaks to every heart. Sanz- were Vaudeville-Nite, a long established tradition at Cathedral High School, held its annual performance on the 16, 17, and 18 of November. Capacity audiences proved by their generous applause that this year's Stunt-Nite was one of the best in the history of the school. The first half hour of entertainment was provided by the Freshman Class, with a skit entitled 'life ls What You Make It. Though they did not take a prize, the Class of '59, with their fast moving and musical plot, gave the three upper classes a fright which they will not soon forget. The Sophomore Class, which can justly boast of a great deal of musical talent, followed the Freshmen with an act entitled f'Rock ,Round The Clock. As its title would imply, it was certainly an up-to-date and timely affair. The high point of their show was a small band which furnished some gen- uine HRock an' Rolll' music. This is the second Stunt-Nite for the class of 58, and, though they won no prize, their performance showed much of the polish, showmanship, and, especially, sportsmanship, which comes of experi- ence. The third skit, called HMusic Through The Ages, was staged by the Junior Class, and took second place in the competition. This was an excel- lent act centered around a jazz band which remained on stage during the entire performance, and which proved its capacity by playing, and playing well, a variety of musical selections ranging from Charleston to waltz. The first place winners, the Senior class, staged a skit entitled Dream Princessl' which was unforgettable for its beautiful voices, music and cos- tumes. Given on a royal theme, the act featured original music written by the late Dr. Charles Magnan, which, to the delight of the audience, was per- fectly woven into the plot. Stunt-Nite this year at C.H.S. was of a caliber which will be difficult to equal in the future. However, for the next three years at least, as the Classes of '57, 158, and '59 come up through the ranks, it is a certainty that Stunt- Nite performances will be of the highest quality. 4 gf 3' s i faf'5f' 4' , kms 'S irfw fail -aaggh i A 5 i s E 'A N ' ' 1 ,g. yum 4 f MR. During the athletic seasons. the cheerleaders spend much of their time cheering for others-now we would like to cheer for them. At every game, win or lose, they have helped to keep our spirits high and our cheering loud. Often, they give as much time as the athletes themselves, but, rarely do they receive the credit which is their just due. Therefore, we take this occasion to express our sincere and deep apprecia- tion to the nine who have both led our voices in victory and helped to overcome defeat. Left to right: Coach Ed Km-nan, Sandra Sinclair, Richard Couture, Palmer Irish. Charles Smith, Leslie Lashway. Ann Nlarie Murphy. Janet Bordeau, Danielle Dole, and Janet Dion. cyeeam The Cathedral High School Rifle Team is continually growing in size and in the amount of interest which it awakens among the students. lfnder the direction of Ed Keenan, the prominent outdoor Sportsman, the team meets at the Vermont State Armory every Monday and Friday evenings to compete against teams from all over the United States. This year's season has not yet heen completed but our hopes are high. Included among the teams already fired against are Burlington High School, Lincoln High School, Ferndale, Michigan, and South Portland High School, South Portland, Maine. The C.H.S. team is composed entirely of Juniors and we expect promising results in 1957. 7464 F494 '74 2 Dedicated Za tie MOTHERS? CLUB and Me FATHERS?
