She hath put out her hands to strong things . . . As she steps across Cathedral's threshold, fortified with the truth which her teachers have cultivated during her high school years, the graduate of i953 chooses the path which she believes will most readily lead to the fulfillment of her obligations as an heir to heaven. Before she arrives at the road's terminus, where God awaits, she will be enjoined in the Words of Holy Scripture to out out her hands to strong things. Upon her compliance with God's Will rests responsibility for the peace and security of this war-racked world. Concord among nations cannot be presaged until each human heart discovers the peace engendered by the practice of the beatitudes. The 1953 graduate must be in the vanguard of the attack against investerate hatred, envy, pride and ignorance--factors which motivate man to ignore the reality of his fellowman's likeness to God. The world is awaiting zealous women to emancipate it from the shackles of materialism and apathy toward eternal values. To- day's graduates, as tomorrow's mothers, nuns and business women, will disseminate Christian culture, the vibrant, vital heritage of the ages. - Her lamp shall not be put out in the night . . . Neither the force of atheistic communism nor the temptations of modern life can quench the fire of love in the heart and soul of the graduate, she faces the future knowing that Faith makes her impregnable, Today, strong young women leave Cathedral because valiant women of another day--Venerable Anne de Xainctonge, Mother Pauline von Mallinkrodt, Mother Catherine Antoninus Thorpe, Mother Elizabeth Seton and Sister Francis--fulfilled their destinies. Their spiritual daughters, members of Cathedral's faculty, follow in their footsteps, molding the valiant women of tomorrow. She hath planted a vineyard . . . Mankind today needs the fruits of charity, modesty, purity, humility and obedience, attributes of a woman who can make the world better because she herself is good. The departing senior carries in her heart images of great religious women whose virtues she will attempt to transplant into her own life. Ripened by God's grace, the fruits' of her goodness will beautify man's evanescent sphere and will glorify heaven's eternal Creator. Those who selected the theme for this yearbook hope that it will in the years to come remind all of l953's valiant women of the cherished Alma Mater where they were trained to put out their hands to strong things. ln this SPlRES they will view again the classrooms, floors and activities which, when combined, convey the spirit of Catheral. It has changed the course of history in a man's life- time: and a man's life in a split second. The glad acceptance of God's gift radically affected the lives of our Mother Foundresses, and through this, the pattern of Catholic educa- tion in America. Perhaps the most prominent of the belles of New York society in the l79O's was Elizabeth Ann Bayley, the daughter of the well-to-do Doctor Richard Bayley, Wedded in Trinity Epis- copal Church to William Seton, son of one of her father's friends, Elizabeth enjoyed a com- fortable home life. ln the early years of her marriage, Mrs. Seton became acutely aware of her religion under the spell of a new minister, Henry Hobart, a zealous Christian gentleman. lt was this realization of God on which she leaned when WilIiam's health and business both failed rapidly. Being advised to take an ocean voyage, William with Elizabeth and their eldest daughter, Anna, set out for Italy to visit his father's business associates, the Filicchi brothers. The journey, however, brought death to the ailing William. Elizabeth at first found the customs of this Catholic country strange indeed, but came to see them as fascinating and beautiful: The Filicchis urged her to pray and seek the truth. From that time a new path opened for Eliza- beth and her children. Left penniless with no means of support, Elizabeth was directed to open a school for girls in Baltimore. ln time, a permanent location was found in Emmitsburg and in ISO9 Elizabeth Seton and a few women who had already joined her, established a com- munity there. The Sisters decided to adopt the rule of St. Vincent de Paul and Mother Seton became the foundress of the Sisters of Charity in America. It was here at Emmitsburg that Elizabeth was to spend the duration of her life, increasing in love, devotion and faith in God's protective nearness. St. Agnes Convent, Motherhouse of the Sisters of St. Dominic Qffafffefl Qffrmy Mzhnfhus clffcwfie On September 8, 1846, Madeline Thorpe, later foundress of the Dominican Sisters of Sparkill, was born in London. Her education was received in a seminary for young ladies conducted by the Anglican Nuns, where she was trained to be active in church affairs and in the care of the poor. Within a few years she felt the call to religion and sought admission among the Anglican Nuns. ln the spring of 1870 she left the community to enter the Catholic Church. Madeline Thorpe then traveled to America where she became acquainted with Father Rotchford, O.P., who aided her in continuing her work with the poor. Finally she received ecclesiastical sanction to found the Dominican Congregation of the Rosary, in which in 1876 Madeline Thorpe pronounced her Holy Vows under the name of Sister Mary Catherine Antoninus. At the time of her death in 1879 her congregation numbered twenty-two pro- fessed Sisters, three novices and six postulants. Sister Catherine Antoninus is a model for all girls who have the courage to enter religious life, not to live but to die, and not to hew the cross but to mount upon it and to give all they have. One of these young novices was Sister Francis, who is now regarded as the American foundress. Little is known of her life, but her spirit of humility, self-sacrifice and desire to serve God through His little ones has prevailed in the community. Sister Francis was a source of constant inspiration to the young members, who prompted by her holiness came closer to the Savior and nearer to their life's goal-sanctity. This example continues to draw many young women to the Order of the Franciscans, which, we pray, will flourish under the protection of St. Francis and the Guardianship of St, Anthony, while Almighty God smiles His blessings on the wonderful works of the Sisters. A thrifty and wise solution to the problem of having a tull wardrobe of attractive clothes is to design and make one's own. Found here in Cathedral are classes preparing students to carry out this idea in their lives. They learn to make themselves a perfect wardrobe from a simple blouse to a formal and even, when necessary, to remake their old clothes. With the guidance given them by Sister Mary lsabel, these Cathedralites may some day rank among the world's ten best-dressed women. The art of making and keeping clothes well-groomed is demonstrated by Patricia Murray, Shirley Mekolites, Maureen Byrne, Margaret Hanley, and Frances Gaetani, all of 507.
