By discarding standards that measured the quality and extent of education according to a pupils social grade and family resources. the United States from her early days became the most forward-looking of all the countries in the world. Through the foresight of such men as Benjamin Franklin, Horace Mann and llenry Barnard the conception of educational function and service widened. S0 that by the twentieth century America had reached an enviable peak in the field of learning. However, the twentieth century brought with it marked changes in American social and economic life which diminished the in- fluence of the home on youth and increased the responsibility of the school. Teachers became as much social guides to their charges as they are instructors of knowledge. With the necessity of pre- paring youth for life confronting them, educators came to recog- nize something which the Catholic Church has been teaching- that moral training is the true and first aim of education. The Church can be justly proud of the advancement of Catholic erudition in America. From the first one-room school established by Mother Elizabeth Seton in Maryland. the Catholic educational system has advanced tremendously. Today it numbers among its institutions in America countless grammar schools, high schools. and colleges. But as the light of Catholic education continues. the darkness of Communism covers many parts of Europe and most of Asia. This Communism of anti-Christ has injected itself with menacing tenacity into the Eastern world and even now threatens the VVest- ern hemisphere. In the unwilling or unwitting countries that have succumbed to Communism an intense system is in effect to indoctrinate youth with communist principles. Our aim in formulating this book. then. is to contrast the educa- tional system here in the United States with education as it exists in these unfortunate countries. , Y , . i ' t Ki '3., . jf .'A?Q . vAr 'M , H I f: J 1' .' Religion, tlze greatest symoo -651-- To Cathedralites Religion is more than a work or a set of idealsg it is a guide that will lead them to an eternal life of love and happi- ness. In Cathedralis hallowed halls we learn that Religion is a matter of everyday life, not something put on on Sunday. Church History with a little humor on the side becomes some- ' thing real. Lively discussions are provoked by 21 study of Faith and morals. The finishing touch is added in that most important Senior Year , where we study not facts but the appli- cation of them, To know, defend and explain our Religion is our aim. O OUI' Cgfee OITL Under the inspired direction of Sister Miriam Carmel. Our l.ady's Guild has become one of the most outstanding clubs in our school. Through the Guild the girls are able to help the sick, the poor and the orphans both spirit- ually and physically. Among the many activities that are con- nected with the Guild are sponsoring sym- posiums, forums, the care of the oratory and most recently the C.Y.A. Holy Hour which is dedicated to the conversion of young corri- munists. During the year Our Ladyis Guild makes cancer pads for the patients at St. Roseis Hospital. Baskets of food were sent to the poor during Thanksgiving and Christmas. Some of the members go up to the New York Foundling Hospital to entertain the unfortunate orphans. To help celebrate the month of Our Lady. the Guild has a special May assembly. These are only a few of the many activities undertaken by this Catholic Action Club. XVhile Mildred Clemens and Elizabeth Clark are having a discussion over a S anish sentence, Grace Hog is strug- gling over the correct use ofgthe sub- junctive. All this is going on under the watchful eye of Sister Gertrude Miriam in one of the Spanish classes. Although Knowledge makes a bloody entrance , learning Spanish can be enjoyable when combined with the wit and humor of Sister Gertrude Miriam. The Good Neighbor Policy is more feasible when we understand the social, economic, and cultural backgrounds of our Latin friends. Motion pictures, discus- sions and the study of great Spanish classics give us a more intimate insight into the char- acters and personalities of Spanish-speaking people. Through these many Spanish activities we have enriched our life in other ways besides the educational. Translating Spanish seems to be a pleasure to these girls. But then in Sister Gertrude Mirianfs room, how could anyone not enjoy her Spanish where each lesson is a happy one? 5, -an BUIUIUNI AND LEFT: Do 'ou like to do Intemmediate Algebra? Two periods a week really helps ns to enlighten our- selves on our physical well-being. The knowl- edge of this vitally necessary subject can be an aid to us all through our lives. High school creates the perfect atmosphere for learning the prevention of disease, under the guidance of the Sisters of the Health Department. Miss D'Amato is giving one of the frequent eye tests to Dorothy Ball. Dr. Boler, our school physician. renders many services to Cathedralites. Pictured above he is taking Clady Kings blood pressure as part of the examination while Miss D'Amato is recording it. There is a little room on the third floor where you can find ailing students during any period of the day, where Miss D'Amato, our nurse, can help them. But this is not her only duty. She has charge of a vast health program at Cath- edral. Some of her problems are physicals and dental notes. To discover the students who might have any eye or ear defects, tests are given once a year. XVhen defects are dis- covered, the students are given advice about further treatment. One of the most important programs in the school is the patch test for the prevention of tuberculosis. Those with positive reactions are given X-rays. A recent addition to this health program is the foot test. All in all, Miss D'Amato's program is helping Cath- edral to be not only a good school but a healthy school. Our nurse Miss D'.-Xmato is pointing out the benefits of wearing proper shoes to Mary Kilmartin and Ondina Hidalgo. Santa Claus is the sub- ject of delight to these youngsters. The October Symposium was a great success in every respect. The stu ents of the various schools, Xavier, De La Salle and the other well-known boys schools, joined together in the discuss- ion on marriage and other essential topics of the day. The evening proved to be most enjoyable. af ? JANE HERZOC . . . 88 Hamilton Place . . . Holy Trinity Branch . . . Athletic Club 1. MARY HESLIN . . . 575 West 176 Street . . . Mary O'Reilly played the part of Mother Seton and through her expressive por- trayal of 'this great woman. we became more familiar with her life and the many services that she rendered to the Catholic youth through the formation of the Catholic School System. Meetings were held each Tuesday afternoon. For many weeks cartons filled with soap, tooth- paste, toothbrushes, rubber balls, pencils, rulers, and other bulky articles crowded our meeting place and the closet was crammed full of cardboard Gift Boxes. The gay red Christ- mas stockings gave a holiday spirit to the place and after many hours of packing, the hard- working Iunior Red Cross representatives and their moderator, Miss Hedlund, enjoyed a Christmas Party in the cafeteria. Then . . . recorcfecf in our prize-winning aromas The senior class of 1950 owes a special trib- ute to the current staff of the Arbutus, for through them Cathedral received a First Place rating from the Columbia Scholastic Press As- sociation. During this past year, the Arbutus our own esteemed school paper sallied forth eight times. Filled with the school news it passes into the hands of its discriminating readers. Through the combined labors of the staff, and the cease- less efforts and untiring energy of the modera- tor, Sister Anna Mercedes, the students are Y C Ci TAR the galleys are arranged into the pattern for the paper. The dummy construction is being done by Rosemarie Marron, Joan VValls, and Crace Lyons. The staffs work is done. kept well informed on the school activities. Dealing with Cathedralites in this capacity has been a most satisfying work for the staff. To hear their exclamation of delight over some surprise, to watch the glow of pleasure in the face of some student who finds her name in Cathedral Capers are worth the hours and the labor spent on the paper. Virginia Keeling and Nona Plessner combine their talents to produce an article for the paper. This is the earliest stage of the paper. This work is then passed on to . . . 2 ,gi The staff waits with anxiety, their eyes tumed towards the student body for a proval. Here Anastasia Su renuck, Marilyn Iaclison and Patri- cia Newcomg read through the completed copy. The finished paper is returned with all the familiar features-Cathedral Capers, the Alumni, the VVe Interviewf' and Don't Missf' These center nerves of the paper are combined with the news of the month and a flavor of light humorous stories to make the Arlmtus a paper that everyone enjoys. XVho says photography is not a fascinatin study? Spires staff certainly found it so, especial y when it came to learning a few pointers on triangle lighting from their moderator, Sister Loretta I'll meet you in 5017 That familiar phrase re-echoed as the school day ended for Ca- thedral and the Spires meeting came to order again. Our one aim centered on perfection both in literary style and unique design. Heavily laden with responsibilities, Grace Henke. our editor, capable and efficient, spurred on each of her staff by her good ex- ample and cooperation. Her purpose was to make Spires. 1950, the yearbook Cathedralites would be proud to own. The old adage of two heads being better than one rang true as Ioan De Poalo and Marie De Curtis, associate editors, incorporated splendid ideas into a finished product. Many tedious hours were spent by Joan Walls, liter- ary editor, as she completely translated our crude English into reality. Money-mad lane Garcia, as Business Manager, wrote out re- ceipts proving that you paid for your book, while Corinne Bontempo, the click happy phoe tographer, rushed about saying, Hold it! just right.
