' Senior Class CATHEDRAL HIGH SCHOOL 560 LEXINGTON AVENUE NEW YORK DEDICATION A hammer pounds the life From out the world ' s vineyards; A sickle withers the ripening wheat. Three peasant children see You And spread the message of Fatima. Their words have come as torches, Lighting this darkened wondering world Warming its cold sad heart. Reproach lies deep upon Your quiet face; Your Son had died and the sickening thud Of hammers tolled His death; And now, You hear again the iron clang. So many wait His death and burial. Our Lady of Fatima, help us to know ourselves; Open our eyes to the only hope Which You have set before us. Our mouths word the prayers requested; Our hands, like yours. Are separated only by the Beads of Peace. Our knees know the feel of earth That is our upthrust ladder. Our hearts kindle burning faith. And as we pass from these portals To herald the souls of tomorrow May we remain at home with You And may You live in us. i These spires, reaching ever up- ward, symbolize the ideals of every Cathedralite. Yes, truly, the title of our book was inspired by this imposing edifice. A weighty problem, labor, was discussed by the debate clubs of our Catholic high schools at Cathedral in November. Father Monaghan of the Catholic labor movement in New York presided. 100 Catholic Book Week was observed in Cathedral by an elaborate library display and an influx of many new books. The Arbutus In rain, snow, sleet or hail, The Arbutus comes through eight times in the merry year. In Cathedral circles it is as much a surety as death and taxes; though, of course, it is welcomed with a mite more enthusiasm. Dipping one ' s fingers into the common dish with the editors of the Arbutus is an experience among the experiences of a memorable career in Cathedral; and to be implicated in one of the editorships is certainly to share intimately in the creation of a spirit that is unrivalled even by such go-to-itiveness as is perennially exhibited by the A.A. or the Glee Club. For the entire staff there is no greater feeling of achievement than that of laying a fine opus at the feet of a discriminating audience. Ill Catholic Action We have shown you Cathedralites working at their studies and enjoying their extra- curricular activities. It can be said here that we work and play very hard; nevertheless, the energy directed toward Catholic Action is second to neither of these. We have been encouraged along these lines by many distinguished visitors; such as Father Menster, the Polar Padre, Father Leyssen and particularly Father Charles Meeus, better known to us as Father Plumblossom. His little talks, though very entertaining, never failed to impress us, for his zeal was beyond anything we could ever hope to reach. Nevenheless we tried— we prayed for the missions. Our Lady ' s Guild with a membership principally of seniors sponsored a triduum in honor of the Immaculate Heart of Mary and encouraged prayer for the missions throughout the school. But our activity was not wholly spiritual: our monthly mission collections reached tremendous figures; Cathedral led all the city ' s Catholic high schools in the Bishop ' s Relief Campaign. Catholic Action is, in a sense, good example on the part of Catholics and a spreading of the knowledge of Catholicism to those outside the fold. We helped to achieve the latter during Catholic Press Month under the direction of Father Stephen Paul Kenny and Mr. Kelly, field representatives of the Sign, by encouraging a knowledge of Catholic literature. In a certain sense Cathedral has her own home missionaries, for many girls teach religion to the children of parishes too poor to maintain schools. Throughout the year we prayed and worked and kept in mind a thought put into words by Father Leyssen, a missionary who labored in China for twenty-six years. As members of the Mystical Body of Christ, we should have the Catholic spirit— we should try to share the truth we have with those less fortunate. Evelyn Sexton models a crisp, cool summer cotton; Pat Haran chooses maize organdie for her spring formal; and with a gra- cious air Dorothy Rossetti wears a two-pieced suit, flared skirt and basque jacket. The other represen- tatives of the show are Roberta Robinson, Joan Capucci, Margaret Hayden, Irene Shea, and seated are Nina Mangiameli and Patricia Haran. Evelyn Sexton Dorothy Rossetti 114 JOAN HAMMOND Editor-in-Chief Dummies! Deadlines! Writers! Photographs! Merely words to some, but these haunting spectres have hovered over the Spires Staff for the past year. They thought about them constantly. They ate, slept and drank Spires! Why, instead of sheep, four-legged cameras strolled through their dreams. They matched wits to find suitable captions to a seemingly endless stream of photographs. It was hard work, but it had its compensations. The discouragements, which they experienced, were very shortly replaced by the wonderful satisfaction of success. All efforts were rewarded four times over by the thrill of sending that first page to the printer. Each page thereafter was an added joy for the staff realized they were not just putting words on paper but were composing the dreams and remembrances of every Cathedral girl of ' 48. They only hope their endeavor will be received with joy.
