SPEECH CLASS The importance of good speech is evidently appreciated by the Cathedral High students in that almost one-third of the entire enroll- ment make up the speech classes, directed by Mrs. Sadie Nissen. Group I includes Juniors and Seniors, Group II, juniors and Sopho- mores, and Group III, the Freshmen. The speech classes present programs at Christmas and in the spring, and also perform at various events throughout the year. On March 20, fifteen students competed in the 4th annual Speech Contest which was held in the Guild Hall. The winners were Maureen Niles, Joyce Geary, and Delores Markarian. Ann Gorham, a 1959 winner, represented Cathedral High School in the Spear Speaking Contest held in the spring at Portland High School. J-I One of the special events of the Parent Teachers' Association is annual Open Housel' held each fall. The enthusiasm which is evi- denced at this time is indeed most rewarding. This first meeting of parents and teachers serves as a means of acquainting the parents with what is being done for their daughters. The teachers are ready and willing to answer any questions regarding subject matter or any other problem that may need clarification at this point. The new look which the school takes on after the summer vacation is always of inter- est to those present. Through this first contact at the beginning of the year, it is the hope of the administration that the relationship between home and school will be more closely knit and that the efforts of both groups will be seen in the daily lives of the students. and Mrs. L.
