Recognition Given For Dedication And Scholarship Every year recognition is given to those few who have excelled in scholarship, sports, and community concern. Their work was done with talent, spirit, and dedication. These people who have gone above the norm are receiving recognition not so much for the honor they have attained but more importantly for the process through which they went to obtain their final goal. 92

NHS Symbolizes Service National Honor Society members stressed community involvement by volunteering their services both in school and out. Seniors worked at Shriners’ Hospital and juniors participated in the Easter Seal Drive. Other activities included a Halloween party for the emotionally disturbed anda collection of clothes for Appalachia. In February 52 seniors and 38 juniors were inducted into the society. Mayor William Sullivan and Fr. Francis Manning were inducted as honorary members. Senate Moves On Controversial Issues This year’s Model Senate passed two bills concerning Civil Rights and Social Services. Committeepersons began preparations in October, hearing testimony, and compiling information which was used in the formation of gun control and welfare-reform bills. Legislation strictly limited the use of handguns, and provided for a national welfare program. Leadership was provided by Kathy Albano, first woman president, Frank Fragomeni, majority leader, and Bob Martin, minority leader. 94
