46 Hockey During the past few years, interest has grown immensely in the sport of hockey. The enthusiasm can be attributed to various factors, but Cathedral’s Panthers account for a substantial amount of this growing attraction. Many thought it would be a year of rebuilding. No one could have analyzed the pucksters more inaccurately. The Panthers opened their season with a series of victorious bouts which established them in the top ranks of the Berry Division. Led by veterans Kevin Conway, Rick Gaw and Bill Ellis, the stickmen skated on to be one of the more accomplished teams in the league. Netminder Gary Mastroianni turned in a superb season along with juniors Jeff Angers, Jack Morganstern, Brian Kenney, and Mark Gallagher. Outstanding rookies Paul Fenton, Tony Pioggia, and Mike Binney blended talents and energy to add to the team’s success. Throughout the season, the Panthers provided a tremendous team effort, and always gave the opposition a hard, well-fought battle.

48 Basketball This was tabbed as a rebuilding year for the Panther Hoop Team. The team included, with the exception of Mike Crowley, all new faces. Some of these were captain Neil Maloney, Tom Foley, Bryon Cyr, and Jim Peys, who led the squad in scoring, with an average of 20 points per game. Coach Tom Ford brought his rookies far, taking fourth in the Inter-school league. One of the year’s most exciting games was against first place Classical. At the end of the fourth quarter, the two teams were deadlocked at 50-50. The Panthers put up a great effort but, at the end of overtime, lost by three points.
