Industrial Arts Kicks Off Bicentennial Exhibit With the upcoming Bicentennial, Industrial Arts classes helped bring interest into the celebration. Using the floor plans of old schoolhouses, the classes reconstructed buildings. More advanced Mechanical Drawing classes did more detailed designs while Basic Tech classes made the vital outlines. Each student was also given an outside project of designing something and then preparing a scale model of his work. 37

36 Students Learn To Drive With New Ford Maverick; New Melodies Harmonize In Music Appreciation Although the price of gas has gone up and the speed limit down, Drivers’ Ed. is still a popular course. A new Ford Maverick came completely equipped with anti-airpollution devices and asix-cylinder engine which used as much space and gas as their old eight-cylinder car. International directional signs proved easier to follow while the drivers cut down on trying to read the signs and kept their eyes on the road. Music Appreciation had a successful second year with a class of twenty-one students. Along with repeats of last year Mr. Dante Pilegi tried some newapproaches, among them the teaching of music theory and four part harmony. Chords and chord structure also played a part in the curriculum. Some of the musically talented students, as well as Mr. Pilegi, brightened up the class by performing on occasion. 1 Student driver Diane Farwell painstakingly begins her first drive. 2 With utmost concen- tration, Paula Hodecker expands her design. 3 New Intenational Signs aid in safe driving. 4 Becoming aware of the parts of the engine aids new drivers. 5 Accuracy is important in Michael Pantuosco’s work. 6 Checking the basic design, Jeff Angers verifies his draw- ing. 7 ‘‘This is what we call a triplet,’’ explains Mr. Pilegi. 8 Stereo enhances the students’ appreciation for music. 9 Senior Matt Wolff diligently prepares his drawing. 10 Mistakes are quickly taken care of by Basic Tech stu- dents. 38 Half Year Course Changes Look Of PE Department This year the P.E. Department initiated a new process of scheduling students. Sophomores took gym daily during the first semester while Frosh took it in the second. Both Sr. Beverly Rochford and Mr. John Michalek favored this method since it allowed them to watch students’ everyday progress. They cited, however, the disadvantage that no gym program could be offered to the students for the other semester. Along with Sr. Beverly, Mrs. Jean Pelland offered the girls various activities such as tennis badminton, volleyball, gymnastics and floor exercises, softball and basketball. A week-long concentration on the dangers of smoking, a complete personal conditioning program, and self-defense as presented by Lt. Daniel Spellasy of the Springfield Police Department were included in the program. Coach Michalek, Mr. Richard Discenza and Mr. William Wise Supervised the boys’ schedule which consisted of football, soccer, basketball, wrestling and volleyball. The boys’ program stressed the importance of weight-lifting in competitive sports as well as in daily physical fitness.
