26 New Courses Enhance English Department’s Outlook Inter-disciplinary humanities was a new feature in the English Department. Offered to seniors and juniors, the course embodied studies in English, Theology, and History. Operating on a grant from the National Humanities Fund, the class was taught by Mr. William McBride, Mrs. Jeanette Paul and Sr. Veronica Brown. Three credits were given for the course which covered three class periods. Under the direction of Mrs. Shirley Pratt and Sr. Ann Lynch, the department offered a diversity of course electives which allowed each student to pursue his own interests. Freshmen were offered a new Study Skills program which was of great value to them in forming good study habits. Co-curricular activities included sophomores attending a Stage West production of Marcus Brutus to supplement their study of Julius Casear. The humanities class sponsored the UMass Ballet Company for interested students.

Through literature the Interdisciplinary Humanities class evaluated var- ious conceptions of man’s destiny. Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and Shakespeare’s Tempest were among the works used to explore this problem. To present different versions of the play Antigone, the class was divided into two groups. While one acted the play in the traditional way, the other group inter- preted it differently and used Charlie Brown and his friends as the char- acters. 1 Sophomores display their dramatic talents in the play TheLicence. 2 Displaying poise and confidence, Kathy Kevane delivers a speech. 3 Freshman John Murphy shares his ideas with his classmates. 4 Concentrating deeply, James Morgan ponders a question. 5 Rich Sergienko consults the text for an an- swer. 6 As the teacher explains a fine point, Dan Allen, Rich Armeda, and Marc Columbe listen intently. 7 In a Major British Authors class Mrs. Jeanette Paul directs class discus- sion.
