New student leaders encourage spirit among paraders Under the guidance of Mr. Dante Pilegi and student conductor Jay Lyons, talented musicians were blended together into a harmonious unit. Although not full strength, the band produced synchronized music resulting from a fullness of spirit. In order to encourage self-improvement, more sectional practices were incorporated into the schedule with emphasis on brass and woodwind divisions. Filling in half times between football games and representing CHS at civic functions, were the color guard and drill team. Influenced by new co-captains Diane Webber and Karen Garvey, the girls perfected formations with many hours of dedicated practice and discipline. New variations of routines included liberty bell and star shapes, coupled with flag and rifle presentations led by Alan Barker, which were composed at summer camp and enacted throughout the year. 1 Precision and form are basic to the drill teams performance. 2 Displaying his ethnic interest, is junior band member Tom Riley. 3 Band members march down Main Street to John Joe Williams’ drum cadence. 4 Pianist Kathy Girard practices her favorite selection. 5 Members of the cheerleading and the drill team squads perform one of their special rou- tines.

Armed with many hours of practice, deliberation, and verbal ammunition, the Cathedral Debate Society opened its ’73-’74 season. Open to every member of the Cathedral student body, the enrollment was larger than that of last year. The larger team offered new blood to tackle the National Debate Topic: ‘Resolved: That the federal government should guarantee a minimum annual income for each family unit.”’ After battling this topic in six tournaments, the Cathedral debators hosted their own invitational tournament on January 5. Using novice, junior varsity, and varsity debators, they competed with 27 other teams in two divisions. Although the hosts do not officially place in their own tournaments, the CHS debators would have attained second place. On March 17, the Diocesan finals were held at St. Mary’s, Westfield, Cathedral’s winners, Mark Chartier, Paul Mooradd, Liz Thiebe, and Dave Canarie, went to the Nationals in New Orleans. 105
