New orators enhance speech team The Cathedral speech team entered Diocesan competition guided by Ms. Barbara Wrega. Although largely inexperienced, the dedicated members, through hours of hard practice, overcame this handicap and placed all twenty-two members in preliminaries. In January the annual Diocesan Speech Festival was held at Cathedral. Over two hundred students from eight schools participated in this event. The Panthers entered many different categories ranging from Humorous Prose to Group Discussion and were awarded six gold medals and five silver medals. Armed with many hours of practice, deliberation, and verbal ammunition, the Cathedral Debate Society opened its ’73-’74 season. Open to every member of the Cathedral student body, the enrollment was larger than that of last year. The larger team offered new blood to tackle the National Debate Topic: ‘Resolved: That the federal government should guarantee a minimum annual income for each family unit.”’ After battling this topic in six tournaments, the Cathedral debators hosted their own invitational tournament on January 5. Using novice, junior varsity, and varsity debators, they competed with 27 other teams in two divisions. Although the hosts do not officially place in their own tournaments, the CHS debators would have attained second place. On March 17, the Diocesan finals were held at St. Mary’s, Westfield, Cathedral’s winners, Mark Chartier, Paul Mooradd, Liz Thiebe, and Dave Canarie, went to the Nationals in New Orleans. 105
