Bowling Under the direction of senior Tom Nolan, the CHS bowling team had an interesting season. During the first match of inter-city play, CHS was badly defeated by Putnam eight to zero. However, during the second match they reversed their standing defeating Putnam by the same score. Advancing in league standing, CHS’s tied for first place in the second match with their arch-rival Classical, who had dominated the bowling league for many years. This tie called for a clarifying pin-fall count. Classical outnumbered CHS’s pinfall and on this count won the match. Sportsmanship was emphasized as team members played as a cohesive unit rather than as individuals. “Of all the sports around, bowling comes closest to the ideal ofsportsmanship.”’ Fr. O’Hear a hae ! Golf The 1973 Cathedral golf team won the Western Mass. title on the course, but lost it through a disqualification in the clubhouse. Though the official records don’t show it, the Panthers had the satisfaction of knowing they won W. Mass. where it counts. It was an experienced Panther crew with graduates Jim Torrenzano, Ed Nugent, Keith Albano, Wes Sparks, and Kevin McCarthy. Senior Matt Sunter also played a role in the highly successful golf season. The highlight of the season for coach Mike Shea and the team was the upset of Chicopee, a perennial power, during the regular season. — i) “Team had an excellent season ... had the lowest team score in the Western Mass. schoolboy tournament.”’ 1.
