Cross Country Rounding off a great winning season, the CHS Harriers surpassed the state mark of 72 consecutive dual meet wins. Under the leadership of Coach Paul Whitlock and co-captains Tom Wolff and Mark Ianello, the team became a dedicated, unified squad. By taking the Columbus Day and Mt. Herman invitationals, the team showed their great talent and power. Key runners were Bill Gelinas, Cris Barret, and Craig Plante. During the WM Championship, the team achieved a goal sought after for many years; sweeping not only the Varsity and JV meets, but also the Freshmen Championship a week earlier. Seven days later, the Panters achieved their dynasty by winning the State Championship held at Franklin Park in Boston. State Championship runners were Mark Ianello, Tom Wolff, Steve Ashe, Matt Wolff, John Coville, Bill Paterwic, Ted McCarthy and Marty Wright. 66

Basketball Following the graduation of five starters, coach Dan Balicki’s team completed a successful season in a supposed “‘rebuilding”’ year. With outstanding depth, witnessed in many sports this year, the squad was able to perform well enough during the regular season to compile a 14-6 record, sufficient to qualify them for the post-season tournament. During the regular season, the squad participated in the New England Catholic Invitational Tourney. Two key victories were over Tech, and the Berkshire powerhouse Pittsfield. Outstanding players on the squad included Jimmy Connery and John Martin, whose injury caused losses of key games. Only through combined effort was the team able to achieve its high standings. = Basketball Team, front row: Manager Robert (Boomer) Roccanti, Tim Duquette, Mike Guihan, Brad Francke, Tim Noonan, Jim Millette, Bob Burke, Manager Charlie Casartello. back row: Mike Crowley, Andy Fitzgerald, John Maak, Jim Connery, John Martin, Rich Pickrell, Tony Fiaschetti, Coach Dan Baliki
