Cross Country Rounding off a great winning season, the CHS Harriers surpassed the state mark of 72 consecutive dual meet wins. Under the leadership of Coach Paul Whitlock and co-captains Tom Wolff and Mark Ianello, the team became a dedicated, unified squad. By taking the Columbus Day and Mt. Herman invitationals, the team showed their great talent and power. Key runners were Bill Gelinas, Cris Barret, and Craig Plante. During the WM Championship, the team achieved a goal sought after for many years; sweeping not only the Varsity and JV meets, but also the Freshmen Championship a week earlier. Seven days later, the Panters achieved their dynasty by winning the State Championship held at Franklin Park in Boston. State Championship runners were Mark Ianello, Tom Wolff, Steve Ashe, Matt Wolff, John Coville, Bill Paterwic, Ted McCarthy and Marty Wright. 66

Soccer New faces added to the soccer squad’s complexion last year, as many underclassmen were called on to fill in vacated positions caused by the graduation of many of last year’s state champs. Coach Lee Kenworthy recruited a total of 16 new players to occupy eight open spots in the starting lineup. Strong leadership was shown by stable veteran co-captains Ken Murphy and Ron Starzyk, who anchored the offense and defense respectively. While completing an undefeated independent schedule, the team’s participation in league play was not as successful. Defeating Commerce and Putnam easily, the kickers gained two ties with league champ Tech, and were defeated twice, once in overtime, by Classical. During the New England Prep School Association Soccer Clinic, the Panthers competed in a scrimage verses Windsor Locks, the Conn. state runnerup the previous year. The team’s youth showed through as their season concluded during the Ist round of the WM tournament. Ludlow, a team Cathedral had yet to beat in all of the years of the sport, denied the footmen again, stymieing them to the tune of 4-1. Redemption was at hand, however, in the new annual varsity-alumni battle. After a scoreless tie in the first half, Murphy, an All-NE selection, led the ’73 squad to a 4-1 win. In addition to new male participants, four girl managers came onto the scene. 65
